It was after they saw the on screen chemistry between Scott and Lauren that the possibility of Luke and Lorelai became a thing and Luke became a major character.

I'll be honest and admit I wasn't a big fan of Luke in the very beginning. I also didn't like the idea of him and Lorelai together. As the show progressed however I greatly changed my opinion about both.
