I agree with you he can be the most wonderful, romantic sounding tenor , but then you click on another link and hear him in the Obraztsova tribute at The Bolshoi and apart from a big , over - held high note in Nessun Dorma ( finished with a head -shake which is worryingly out of place, rather than dramatically in context) you have singing which is really distressing.

I'm so glad I found this today! Last night I watched the stage production with Borodina and Domingo from 2002 and I was disturbed that she could sing such a beautiful love song while staying completely in character as a venomous, vengeful seductress. She is a very convincing actor! In this clip she comes across as a woman who, at least for a moment, can feel real love for Samson, and I think the aria is all the better for that. There are a lot of disturbing things about that Milan staging, but it really is thought provoking - it's right here on KZbin if you want to check it out.

had the privilege to hear these two sing their roles at the Lyric in Chicago -- each bringing uniquely eloquent musical virtue to the music, as well as superbly acted roles. They were Samson and Delilah. I think a parallel for Mme. Borodina was Hedy Lamar's incredible eloquent physical beauty in the film, so it is Mme. Borodina brings that quality tin vocal splendor.
