When a boat takes on water, it can cause damage to the boat in a variety of ways. What should one do when the boat is taking on water?

What do you do when taking on water? First, it depends on why is the boat taking on water. Second, is the engine running! Those two question have to answered before a really good plan of action can be applied. The boat in the above video, did exact what he should have been doing in the first place, get the boat moving forward. Thats how I saved my 26' SeaCraft. I gave both engines as much throttle as they could turn. Once your engine will not develop any more rpm, both push the throttle more forward. You can cause a catastrophic engine failure...which will most likely result in sinking the boat! My boat was so heavy with water (automatic bilge pump switch failed) that 3500rpms was all she would turn and maybe 10knots forward speed. I had one of my customers steer the boat towards the nearest rig while manually got water out of the hull. Once the started going faster, the rpm naturally raised. At that point I knew I saved the boat and a 50nmile coast guard rescue! But if you had a hole say in the bow, that last thing you want is forward speed!

FIRST THING ALWAYS.....PUT LIFE JACKETS ON. It can go many ways from this point, I'd have to agree to shut engines down and get the bilge pump running. If the boat isn't going down too quickly, then you may be able to run your engines and get the water to the back of the boat to get the boat stabilized, as long as the hole isn't in the bow because then you'd be shoveling water with your boat!!! right?? go into any sporting goods/chandlery and put on an auto inflating pfd and you'll ask yourself "why am i not stocking a bunch of these on the boat?" small price to pay for your childrens/grandchildrens life.if you can afford the boat you can afford the safety gear.

Seriously! They have to have some prior knowledge of how choppy these waters are before launching up stream. I've seen so many people from these videos shaking hands with danger....some even get knocked overboard. I guess it's hard to flex with your trophy wife if you're both wearing PFDs.

Here in Quebec, in Montreal, on Lake Saint Louis, it is MANDATORY for everyone on board a boat to have a PFD, pointe finale!

I'm in the Northeast US and same here. Fines and/or jail time if the PFDs aren't actually ON the children. Adults can have PFD in the boat.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of the SeaVee, I think they've nailed the hull design, especially the bow. The way the bow flares outward, seems to channel water away from the boat very nicely, causing a lot less stuffings, as opposed to many of the other boats of the same size. They also cut waves very nicely. 👍🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

@Carlos Camejo Many of the boats are very well made for cutting waves and so on, no doubt. I just happened to notice the SeaVee and commented on it. There are also a few designs that baffle me and not in the best way. 👍🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

What infuriates me is that there is no law in place for kids or pets to wear life jackets! All it takes is one miss calculation and they are overboard! That poor dog! The kids can say… no, I don’t want to go! The pet however has no voice in the matter! You would never get away with driving a car with unrestrained children!

Like so many others, I continue to amazed or in shock that virtually no one is wearing a life jacket, especially the kids. How stupid are these people operating a boat? (I don't want to use the word' captain' because they are not!) The local police, Coast Guard and CG Auxiliary should be at the mouth of the canal or inlet and stop every boater where at least the kids (different ages I think for dif. states) and not allow them to depart until every person has a life jacket on. And fine them for repeated offenses. Smarten up guys!

The Coast guard should take clips of these videos as part of a class "how not to operate your boat" if I was a coast guard watch Commander at the closest station to this inlet I would be slowly pulling out my hair every time I would have to watch something like this And I'm willing to bet you the Florida marine patrol feels exactly the same way., If not worse

I believe this is call "shoaling effect". Quick nut shell version. The pass is artificial cut though the island, but shoaling can be natural too. The pass is about 12 deep with both sides of pass opening to deep water. Add to this, the heavy gulf stream current plus wind creates a rolling circulation in the water. If you think about a surfer shooting the tube, this is a circular mortion raised above the surf water level, it's the more extreme example, but that circulation is happening below water. In the deep you may not notice or it's not as strong. However, as the current pushes the circles closer together to the shallows, the circles close thier gaps and rise higher above the water surface. This is the result you see in the video. There are more complexities but that the nutshut version. Oh, and the gulf stream is huge and powerful flowing up Mexico fallowing the cost to Texas to Florida around the time and believe it or not to the England. It directly effects there climate that is another story lol.

It’s not always that rough in Boynton Inlet, I’ve recently gone through it several times, and I’ve only seen it like that once.

It's rough when the tide is rushing out of the inlet, and the wind happens to be against that tide, or an E/ NE wind. The wind helps stack up the waves. Happens at most inlets. If there's little or no wind, it can be flat as a pancake.

Some of them inlets can be extremely rough and dangerous especially to inexperienced when the wind and tide are against each other sometimes not the best decision to go out cause you got to come back in. Good marine weather report is invaluable use it
