Unfortunitly cremation doesn't always go to plan either, so many stories of places cremating the wrong bodies and even some that families think have been cremated only to turn out to be false. The laws need to change and places need to be stronger regulated. I've registered to be donated to a university for medical students to practice on so my family aren't burdened with dealing with disposing of me

@@dm607 my local university has actually stopped accepting cadaver donations as they're switching to other ways of teaching. I find it rather scary that doctors and nurses will soon no longer be taught using real bodies, but I've found another that will accept but only because I'm what my consultant says is the worst case of arthritis she's ever seen her entire career. So maybe they can learn something from me

When you're buried in a vault, crypt or mausoleum your body goes on an adventure lasting potentially thousands of years. Every day, a little bit at a time, something new happens to it, and hopefully people will see your remains, pay some respects or learn something about life. To me cremation is dark and cold. You get turned to dust and bits of bone and stuck in a box or scattered in the wind, cutting off nearly all chance for anyone to ever see you again, and nothing changes.
@geoffletkemann653
@geoffletkemann653 Ай бұрын
Unlikely, unless you are mummified like an ancient pharaoh. Some of those vaults weren't even 150 years old yet, and there was nothing left of the bodies or coffins, the vaults themselves will likely collapse within another 20 years or so. Cremation isn't dark or cold, it's actually kind of hot.

So sad to see the cemetery is so neglected, and it could be so beautiful if cleaned up. I feel sorry for the remains of those people whose bones have been exposed. I know it would be a lot of money and time to make things right and there's probably no family left around the area, or they just don't go there to visit. The modern way of thinking about cemeteries is much different than those times. Like you said, cremation is much cheaper and most people won't go to visit anyway so they don't care if the stones crumble. But I think channels like yours and Sue's and others are making people more aware of the history and beautiful monuments that are residing in cemeteries and graveyards. Maybe it's even spurring people on to look into their own family history. Thank you, GV, for making people realize that these places are worth looking at.

Just wanted to say a little thank you for everything you do, GV, and for the respect you give to those who have passed. I'm thinking these vaults gave a feeling of permanence and respect to those who had them constructed. Time has taken a tremendous toll. I don't know what the answer is: It's dangerous for the public to be near these deteriorating structures. There seems to be no funds to preserve or restore, let alone mow and edge. I enjoy seeing these videos as it gives a glimpse into the past but it also confirms my desire to be cremated. The one vault showed some lovely carved coffins then the next one showed the destroyed coffins and bones. Why pay all that money for a supposed eternal resting place to have it falling apart, destroyed or covered over with new buildings or whatever? There is a historical cemetery near where I grew up that has several notable people in it and many paid for so called perpetual car yet their graves and mausoleums are unkept and some of the mausoleums are falling apart with one of them having all the coffins removed as the roof fell in. A lot of them aren't that old, from the 1900s. I think I'd rather be ash blowing on the winds and forever free.

@@GraveVisitations They do need to answer but sadly way too many don't, they get away with it. That particular cemetery I mentioned has still done nothing although a local tree service went in and for free took down several storm damaged or dead trees. Nothing else has been done. We have numerous large mausoleums with hundreds of bodies here in the States that are abandoned and falling apart with body fluids leaking, coffins smashed and mold everywhere. Rarely are the owners held accountable.

Nothing is forever. Apart from wild animals, especially rodents, plants are the number one destroyers of manmade structures, the roots of trees and vines are quite powerful and can work their way in between the smallest of cracks and cause irreparable damage to stone, bricks and slate. Then there is water, which expands when frozen and can also destroy headstones and brick and stonework. that is why it is essential for a vault or mausoleum to be built in a well-chosen location where they can be properly maintained with preventative maintenance, to stop things from decaying prematurely. I've seen far too many burial vaults and mausoleums vandalized and desecrated by those who are of ill intent. and then there are those who simply want a human skull, which I too think a very cool item, but the fact that they were once a human, prevents me from ever actually wanting one as a personal possession. I thought of getting my body scanned and having the file turned into an STL file so I can print my own skull on my 3D printer, but that is far too creepy for me to actually do it, plus the scan is quite expensive. So as a result of the terrible things I have seen happening to burial structures in general, has convinced me to be buried deep in the ground, in a vault meant for one casket in an actual grave, So the people will pass over my grave and look for easier pickings from a mausoleum or vault. I'm not really into the whole buried in something that can easily be opened by anyone with a will to get inside. like the catacombs you took us to in Belgium, there were so many of them that the stone face of the vault was either in the process of separating or was completely free from the mortar that was supposed to be holding it in place. And there are still grave robbers, people who do not care about the damage they do to the resting places of those who have passed on before us. and then there is the massive debacle in Italy where entire grave sites, of vaults upon vaults that have collapsed and spilled out the remains of the people buried in them, open vaults where the caskets/coffins have broken up and spilled out the bodies in such disarray, that the remains are not all mixed up and who can tell them apart now? thousands of corpses exposed to the open air. it makes me sick to think about how much of a mess and desecration it is because of the government's poorly execute plans, lack of proper construction and poor to no enforcement of codes meant to prevent such tragedies from happening, and for some odd reason, the vaults were constructed upon each other going higher and higher, instead of the direction they should have been going. and all because of shameful pride, in trying to build the most beautiful of vaults it was like a constant one-upmanship between vault building and the safety and structure of them all being heaped upon each other was simply begging for a minor earthquake to happen, which Italy is infamous for, because of volcanic activity. it finally happened, and the whole place there is in a huge mess, or WAS but who knows just how much proper work was done, since the construction there is famously poor to begin with. so I am quite happy being tossed into a hole in the ground, or more accurately in a small vault, in a hole in the ground but I guess I am spoiled for choice, living in North America, there is no lack of land to be used for burial. unlike Europe, so I can see why cremation is the most chosen route, since space is at such a premium there.

Interesting how the analogy of 'the snakes being driven out' by Saint Patrick was another way of describing the various non-Christian groups that were gone from Ireland over the centuries. Fascinating how history is explained.

actually in my opinion unless there is someone left in charge of these vaults to keep them i good condition they should be demolished and the remains interd in an normal Grave

I really enjoy your videos. In some graveyards the vaults seem to sealed to keep people out but when you show inside the coffins are smashed and bones scattered. If they are sealed how does this happen?

Do you think remains are disturbed by animals? I’d hate to think people were doing it for dark purposes. Great video btw.

I think that these vaults are locked and inaccessible to humans and animals. I believe that rain entering them over the centuries from the 1800s, sometimes earlier, causes the wooden caskets to break apart and the remains end up covered by the mud which is in some vaults. The weather in Ireland tends to be cold and damp in the winter months and affects the coffins over the centuries.
