I was just talking to my son about this yesterday. My mama told me years ago not to be surprised that if in the future seeds and food are used in place of money. She also told me to make sure to learn things continually to to be self sustaining because once its learned no one can take that knowledge from you. She's gone now but those words are ringing very true.

My son hit the jackpot yesterday! He ran into a friend in Tractor Supply while looking for pea seeds for me. Found out this friend had bought all of their seeds for 25cents a pack. Apparently he's quite the hoarder. My son went back to his house with him and ended up with about 40 packs of seeds for $10. So I have all my seeds for fall and next spring, outside of what I seed save this fall from harvest. Everything from tomatoes to herbs to greens and root veggies. Corn, onion, beets, beans....you name it, I have the seeds for it. I feel so lucky to have them already! We all need to get our seeds early, and save all we can! Thanks as always Patara...we all love you ❤️

Because of this year's dry summer, there are predicted to be shortages of potatoes, onions and brassicas here in the UK. I don't have anywhere to grow vegetables nor do I have a huge amount of storage space for hundreds of canning jars so I've prioritized meat and poultry for canning and the dehydrator is running 24/7 with vegetables while they're available and affordable. There aren't many people here that can or dehydrate and 24 hour supermarkets have got people into the habit of buying two or three days worth of food on the way home from work. Newer houses are small and none have a separate pantry area or extensive cupboard space and so people don't keep a lot of food at home. I'm lucky in that I live alone and have a spare bedroom which is now my prep room but most don't have that spare space. It's going to get really rough.

I learned something interesting for saving pumpkin seeds (tried and tested)! Thought I would share- Once you take the seeds out of the pumpkin, dry them on a paper towel, write what the name of the pumpkin on the corner of the towel, store them in a paper envelope for next year. You can tear off the paper towels and plant them! That’s it! Simple. Plant the seed and paper towel for a pumpkin!

This may depend on where you live. I’m in NE Indiana. At the end of the season I bury one tomato, pepper, squash, etc. and mark it. They always come up the next year. Usually late like early to mid June. They are always the strongest and have the most produce. They always catch up and surpass any that I buy or start inside. Do I still save and buy seeds, start them indoors? Absolutely. Always have a backup plan in place. I also include seeds in my bug out bag. Someday I may have to leave home. I have a place to go. But in the event that falls thru and I’m on the road and hopefully survive, I want to settle down. I may just have the seeds to start over.

I know that buying Avon isn’t a necessity but just wanted to put this out there. I’ve been selling Avon for 29 years & I’ve never seen the shortages on their core products like I’ve seen in the past couple of years. It started out with about ‘1 or 2 month’ waits but in July, Avons top seller, Skin So Soft (SSS), went in to BO & won’t be available until December. We’ve NEVER had that long of a wait, especially for a core item. It’s not just the SSS bath oil but almost all of that line, as well as some of their other very popular products. The most well known thing about the SSS bath oil is how effective it is against mosquitoes, flies, etc. for animals & people. Just thought I would throw this out there as an example of how hard it is on everything.

I remember growing up that both my maternal and paternal grandparents had seeds saved and stored on the pantry shelves right next to all of their canned foods! My mom was from a family of 10 from Missouri and daddy from a family of 13 from Oklahoma. Both my grandma's saved the seeds from every type of vegetable or fruit they grew. I loved both of them dearly and learned so much from them! Even as a young girl I was in awe of their pantry. They also did the same with flower and herbs seeds. It was just what they did...not like it was a big deal or out of the ordinary. That was life then and here we are, doing what they did. So thankful for my being raised following the old ways.

This is a weird grocery store story. I was in the discounted beef area of the meat shoppe of the store. I picked up a 'reduced price' packet of beef. Original sticker on there with the Reduced Price sticker slightly over it, but not covering the original price per pound or price. The Reduced Price was MORE than the Original Price, because in the days between the packaging of the beef and then the reduced price to get it out of the store raised so much in those few days, that it's reduction price, to the new beef prices, ended up costing more than the original pricing.

@@Mercedes65 I save my tomato seeds from year to year. Even store bought tomatoes have viable seeds. Just scrape them off when you slice them onto a paper towel and let them dry. Then fold the dried towel and store it in a Ziploc bag in a cool dry place. When you get ready to plant, just tear a seed or two off, start them in containers or in your garden after last frost.

@@Mercedes65 Depends on the seed. Typically the smaller they are the less time they will last example: carrots lose about half their viability but you plant them and then thin them. Beans, I’ve sprouted some that were several years old. The trick is to store them in a cool dark place. If there’s a particular kind of seed that you’re looking to save, look it up and you’ll probably find a blog about it if you can’t get the book.

Rather than buying a lot of my seeds from companies (and hoping they don't somehow get killed in the mail like 99% of my seeds this year), I am going to the local farmers market, asking for heirloom strains that they are selling, and seed save from those! They are varieties that I know will grow in my area, I trust the farmers I have been seeing at the market for 15+ years, and it's a lot cheaper since I am going to eat the food portion after removing the seeds whenever possible. My egg lady is going to give me blackberry and raspberry canes. It's not perfect, but it's a start and I'm more confident that I will get viable seeds this way than trusting the postal service. I bought Seed to Seed months ago and WOW!! is it just chock full of great information!

And of interest to us was of the dozen motels where we stayed on the trip we only once saw more than 5 cars in the parking lot. That included the town totally dependent on tourist dollars. We have been there a dozen times and never ever seen vacancy signs on the motels, but all had vacancies. It was so strange. Undoubtedly much of that was due to gas prices. But you have to know the hotel owners and hotel staff are being severely impacted in their pocket books. And that has impact on the economy of the towns.

Patera, I am so glad you're bringing up the seed saving again. For those who live in an apartment and don't have the room or land to plant pay close attention to the seed packets. I was noticing this year many of the seed packets have it right on the front if they can be grown in a container, some you will find that information on the back of the packets. Grab them up, anything is better than nothing.

Even if they don't say they can be grown in a container it is still worth a try. For the most part a 5 gallon grow bag or bucket works great. I have been growing on my balcony since 2014 in various containers. I have grown tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, sweet potatoes, chard, collards, lettuce, bush beans, cherry tomatoes, herbs, squash and more on the balcony depending on the year.

For some reason nothing is doing well in my grow bags. My normal garden bed got contaminated with grazon they are now spraying the fields with so it was in soil we bought. I had to do containers this year and nothing doing well. Squash and zucchini growth are stunted and tomatoes are not producing. Not sure why. I put them in the only strip of sun I have in my yard so could be they aren't getting enough sun but it's been so hot that they would burn up otherwise.

Seeds can sometimes (because some stores don’t take EBT) be bought with EBT because USDA considers them food. Do a search for Burpee Seeds, in the description it will tell you if it’s an EBT qualified seed packet. Also, seeds that are left at end of season are discounted because it’s considered food with an expiration date.
