Cement mixer with audible warning on left indicator and other cyclist safety features.

Silly cyclists should just learn to LOOK AT A LORRY'S SIGNALS before deciding to move alongside them. Otherwise I have no sympathy if such carelessness brings them harm.

Unless it extends a chainsaw on its left side I can't imagine this stopping a sillcylclist.

I wonder if the driver gets more annoyed by the yapping turn signal than pedestrians/cyclists?

@startreking2007 Could be! He was sitting there reading the paper for a couple of minutes whilst he waited for the entrance to the building site to clear for him.

These warning systems and cameras for the drivers came about partly through a campaign led by the mother of a girl who got crushed under a cement lorry like this when it turned left into her as she was cycling. The wheels went right over her head... Makes you think about your mortality.

@startreking2007 I'd rather listen to a yapping turn signal than someone being squished up against some railings. Almost all lorries have this when reversing, but its mostly cement mixers with audible lefters, due to poor visibility and open wheel arches.

@SkrzypczykBass True enough. It also doesn't stop an aggressive HGV driver from overtaking and left hooking/driving over the top of a cyclist.

@SkrzypczykBass But it doesn't do that in the Netherlands. Cars and lorries and bikes still meet and cross paths at junctions, only the junctions become far more complex than ours. So the driver starts to assume that anyone on the left will get out of the way, then squashes the deaf cyclist that happens to be in the wrong place.

There's also the chance of it making an idiot driver feel more justified in left hooking you. Many already think indicating gives them the right to do what they want regardless of those around them rather than it being a signal of their intentions, for example, bus drivers indicating as they set off and you're alongside them. How long before a lorry driver left hooks someone, flattens him and says, "Didn't you hear the warning?"

There are good and bad road users on both sides and even the most diligent people have a lapse of concentration or make a misjudgement sometimes. The more means there are to improve safety the better though nothing is more effective than common sense and paying attention.

I really hate those recorded warnings. They're more distracting than the ordinary reversing beep, and they're too quiet to actually take in what they're saying unless you either spend a couple minutes listening extremely carefully or you already know. So as a result they're worse than pointless. I also hear them from time to time from my house, and it always makes me think "what the hell is that noise" for a while, and then when I realize what it is I just go from puzzled to annoyed.

Have witnessed this a few times myself (think a lorry I passed on ride in earlier had it) Great feature along with the signs but unfortunately it won't stop the die-hard (pun intended) ejit heading up the LHS....

It takes far too long, by the time it has beeped twice and said "warning-" the cyclist will have been smeared all round the corner

The junctions may look complex, but are they more complex to use? With segregated paths the only conflict point is where the path crosses the street, supposedly in good view of drivers. Easier for the HGV driver to check the path, or half a dozen mirrors for cyclists in front of the bumper or filtering on both sides of the vehicle?
