I find it very unlikely that Baku would have been quite so emboldened to go to war had Russia not gotten entangled in a horrific war in Ukraine, as I understand it, part of what kept that uneasy peace was Russia's large amount of reserves being free to go wherever and do whatever but the moment the majority of Russia's military became tied up in Europe, sealing the fate of multiple Eurasian states in the process.

It’s not that Russia doesnt have the soldiers or power. All of the West is supplying Ukraine. Azerbaijan could be crushed. However, Russia does not care about this conflict. Because Azerbaijan supplies European oil, it would be wiser for Russia to court Azerbaijan and Turkey than aid the Armenians.
@diomuda7903

I don't think Azerbaijan will end this. With Nakhchevan being separated by Armenia, they want to claim a direct land border. And Russia being tied down by Ukraine can spark even more wars to redefine border in the region. Iran is unwilling to let Armenia die because Armenia is Iran's only friend left in the Caucasus, but chronic problems can hinder that. Turkey, while plagued by problems and growing tensions with Europe, is far more advanced than Iran and can aid Azerbaijan if wants.

One thing I’ve not seen in pretty much any discussion of this is the possibility that Russia has purposefully abandoned Armenia as punishment/to keep control. I’m not saying geopolitics isn’t a factor but in 2018 Armenia elected a somewhat less Putin friendly government and I find it interesting that Russian support which was always quick before suddenly stopped afterwards. 2020 did not end because of Russian intervention but Armenian surrender and yes Russia has made no attempt to stop the numerous cease-fire violations or attacks on Armenia proper. Many points to Azerbaijan’s decision to do this during the Ukraine invasion while Russia is weakened and distracted but that wouldn’t explain their inaction before... I think between geopolitics and the new leader of Armenia being less friendly Putin said fine do you want to drift from us have fun with that…and if the government was to be destabilized that is of course beneficial for Putin, esp if Armenia does move in a nationalist more authoritarian direction.

I hope and pray that all the Artsakhi Armenians escape the genocide and do not succumb to the Azerbaijani regime's propaganda. Azerbaijan is probably eager to repopulate the regained territory with 100s of thousands of its own internally displaced persons and has the necessary means to reconstruct and revitalize the area. I see Azerbaijan as a geopolitical extension of Turkey, so Baku regime can do whatever it wants: the two countries will probably proceed to invade Armenia and take its SE corner so as to physically and territorially unite Nakhichevan with the rest of Azerbaijan. Armenia is simply unable to defend itself from these two powerful adversaries, as virtually nobody in the international community really cares about Armenia, since it has no oil & gas to offer or pay for a large amount of modern/advanced weapons and cannot count on any of its allies to help it, let alone fight alongside it: Russian regime seems more interested in keeping favorable relations with Turkey and not risking another front with NATO, the EU needs Azerbaijan's oil and gas as well as Turkey's cooperation in many areas, NATO (and USA) can't go against one of its own most powerful members, Turkey, and Iran is not going to react unless ethnic tensions arise within the Azeri population living inside Iran's nortwestern territory. Geopolitically, Armenia is more or less on its own. The only hope for Armenian nation is Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. Pray for Armenia and Armenians.

Great summary of the current situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. Only issue with the analysis is the figure of Armenia's capacity to handle 40000 mentioned in the media. It apparently refers to "families" not individuals. Whether that is a realistic figure is a different question. Also many of the refugees plan to move on to other countries, like Russia, etc. where they have family connections.

I think there is a fatal error to disregard the period between Armenia’s victory and the 2nd war. Armenia could have struck a deal that was more favorable to them during this period. Pride stopped them, and as a result the Azeris were forced to make a move. You can’t hold onto territories for nearly 30 years and expect things will continue as is.

@@roussounmanman Of course, Westerners will define Cyprus as an occupation. The truth is that Türkiye, Greece and the UK are the guarantors of the status quo of Cyprus. After the Greek Cypriots took over the government with a coup and committed genocide against the Turks, Turkey used its right of guarantor and carried out a military operation on the island. This is completely legal. In the referendum held to return to the status quo, Turkish Cypriots said yes, while Greek Cypriots said no. It is the Greek Cypriots who do not want a united Cyprus. If they had voted yes in the referendum, Turkish soldiers would have left the island.

Genocide? That's rich coming from a Turk. Read the Anan plan for the unification of Cyprus. If you think that 20% minority should have that much power, you're delusional. The agreement was very unfair to the Greek Cypriots, thus rejected. Also, no-one blames Turkey for its intervention when the Greek coup happened. It overthrew the government, and it was all over. the other thing to keep in mind is that the Azeri president can stay in power without calling for an election as long as a state of war exists. That’s what the average Azeri citizen assumed was going on until 2020-a pact between the two governments to stay at war for domestic political reasons. This changes the calculus, but I think it’s still probably a factor-any resolution will have to perpetuate a potentially inflammatory status quo to preserve that constitutional stagnation.

I don't think Azerbaijan wants to widen the conflict by angering Iran. On the other hand, I don't think Iran wants to open an internal conflict by making the Azerbaijanis prone to support their ethnic Azerbaijanis brothers conscious of the possibility of a Great Azerbaijan (and it's the biggest minority and numbers vary, and they say Iran doesn't want to report their real numbers). Also Turkey doesn't have oil and gas and integration with other Turkic peoples would prove quite a good geopolitical move, something that would make any Iran's movement against Azerbaijan one that could ignite a disaster. But Iran also has many (many) many enemies, and it would be too dumb to try to be sole arbiter on such conflict. And so on and so forth.

There will be no conflict involving the Azeris in Iran. The notion that Iran's entire Azarbaijan province (the true Azeris, not the artificial ones to the north) are all ready to secede is mere propaganda, and I say that as someone with roots in Iran. What's more, that region isn't purely Azeri - there are Kurds and Persians there too. Aliyev must understand that if he ignites this conflict, he risks world war III. Iran, Russia, Turkey, Israel, and inevitably the US will all be dragged in. It will make the Nagorno Karabakh war look like a playground school fight.

Thank you so much for your honest and very educated analysis! As of right now it is 75,000 refugees. This conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been created and kept in constant by Russia, just to have control over south caucasus. Russia has been keeping Nagorno Karabakh as a hot bomb in his hands against both countries. The shift of Armenia towards democracy and democratic election of Pashinyan was unacceptable for Russia. It also threatened precarious presidency of autocrat and dictator Aliyev. So the people that you mentioned on the streets protesting against the government of Pashinyan are sponsored by Russia, and are the members of the 5 column in Armenia. These are the corrupt remnants that have financial ties with Putin's regime, that threaten the democracy and sovereignty of Armenia proper, and it was their members that signed the capitulation of Nagorno Karbakh. You also mentioned that days ago when Azerbaijan forces launched an attack against Artsakh Armenian government did not respond. That attack was deliberate in order to envolve Armenia proper in fight and then capture South of Armenia "Zangezur Corridor" by force. They do have a road from Nakhichevan to Azerbaijan through Iran, but Turkey and Azerbaijan need "Zangezur corridor" for Russia to have a road to overpass the western sanctions, and it also will connect the Turkic world. That region will not have any piece until autocrats and dictators like Aliyev, Erdogan and Putin are still in power.

If they manage to relocate all Armenians who wish to leave Azerbaijan without more fighting, give them shelter, jobs, education and so on - it could be a "win" for Armenia. Well, not a win in terms of winning the war, but taking into consideration demographic issues all over the world - such influx of new citizens could boost economy, but only with good management, otherwise it could transform into a nightmare.

Example of what happend to Armenians in their own historical homelands in Shushi Kharabakh before: Immediately after the quelling of the uprising, Azerbaijani troops, along with city's Azerbaijani inhabitants, turned their wrath on Shusha' Armenian population.[12] The city's churches were put to the flame, as were cultural institutions, schools, libraries, the business section, and the homes of wealthy Armenians. Bishop Vahan (Ter-Grigorian), who had sought a policy of accommodation with the Azerbaijani authorities, was murdered and beheaded, his "head paraded through the streets on a spike."[12] Chief of police Avetis Ter-Ghukasian was "turned into a human torch," while hundreds of others were similarly murdered with impunity.[12]

Greek here and it's horrible to see Armenia in a terrible position yet again but it has been sadly coming. Logically and simplistically Artsakh should have been recognised as Armenian due to the population but nah, let's just stick with Soviet internal borders. On the whole ethnic cleansing debate, it's important to also emphasise Turkey's decisive role and that them and Azerbaijan are "one country two states". A country that doesn't even recognise previous mass genocides committed by them against Armenia. It's impossible to feel safe, there is way too much bad blood on both sides and everyone knows it. The killer is the geography with a Turkey shaped barrier separating them from the west and being surrounded by far wealthier, larger countries. Realistically there is only Russia with the ability and/or inclination to help out. Putin taking his eyes of the region was the openening needed. I hope Armenia can integrate the many coming refugees and perhaps a more concentrated population can help the country grow. 🇦🇲♥️

I fear the worst. I'm not Greek but studying Byzantine history has left me with unending loathing of the Turks. And oppression is only a more subtle tool of cultural annihilation.

Honestly, whilst Western diplomatic efforts may have 'failed', I fail to see how. Armenia is reaching out to the West in search of more security and aid (just as it did in the 1990s before Putin promised to defend it if Armenia allowed Russia to base forces along NATO's border). Without the Nagorno-Karabakh issue and with Western aid, Armenia can stabilise and develop, finding economic prosperity. Azerbaijan, a major exporter of gas and potential host of pipelines from Central Asia, will feel more secure and can turn its attention to securing itself against Russian and Iranian interference, buoyed by funds from growing exports to the West and a strong relationship with Turkey (a major NATO member). Russian 'peacekeepers', that were hamfisted into this conflict like so many ethnic conflicts of the region, were shown to be toothless - which was almost guaranteed in light of the devastation the Russian military has suffered in Ukraine. Such follows last years refusal by Moscow to send Armenia military aid in spite of formal alliances. Plus, China wasn't able to implicate itself successfully in the conflict. It seems like there is now, despite the dangers of further ethnic conflict or escalation, a real opportunity to establish a lasting peace. So, here's hoping the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh doesn't spread and we see an era of renewal and prosperity in the Caucuses.

Wars are a fact of human nature, always have been and always will be. We have seen the longest span of peace on the European continent since 1945, and absolutely shocking 77 years which hasn't happened in European history since as far back as Pax Romana in the first century AD. It seems that this long extension of peace is finally coming to an end though as more and more European countries find themselves embroiled in internal turmoil or outside aggression. Azerbaijan won't stop with Nagorno-Karabakh, they want the corridor. Iran also knows it can't take on Turkey and won't sacrifice itself or waste proxy resources for a marginal, non-Islamic ally like Armenia. They have far bigger fish to fry in the Gulf and Levant. Armenia matters less to the wider world than Azerbaijan, is unable to dedicate the same level of material or manpower resources to war, so the calculation is simple, they will lose territory to Azerbaijan, under Turkish sponsorship and will be unable to do anything to stop it. Expect it to happen soon while the West and Russia are distracted by Ukraine and Iran is weak. Aliyev has also courted Xi, so China, as always will stay out of the conflict and deal with the victor.

I hope the conflict is over now that Nargono-Karabakh is done (as of today it announced it'll cease to be Jan 1 2024) but I do fear there will be a claim on Armenia itself, over that corridor. As you alluded to Azerbaijan has rattled that saber before and maybe it was tough man negotiating but given their position of power and feeling of strength, we gotta fear they'll act on it. Esp when you see the rhetoric from Azerbaijan, they've called Armenia "West Azerbaijan" and made statements implying its all really Azeri land & Armenians haven't been there historically. I've read schools teach propaganda and Armenian hatred. After Ukraine we can't dismiss the possibility and if so I dont see how Armenia lasts very long/doesn't become a full scale genocide (given the history). Maybe Iran does intervene but then 1 the conflict is even messier and 2 if we get a Turkey-Iran proxy war yeah...no one wants that unholy nightmare of a mess.

Regarding the Karabakh conflict and possible Nakhchevan conflict, I think that it will be fascinating to see how Saudi Arabia, Israel and Iran will react. Iran is Armenia's oldest ally and won't abandon the Armenians, and Armenia is, so far, favoring Iran more than any partner, even Russia doesn't receive that. Iran won't turn its back to Armenia, if Azerbaijan really attacks Armenia via Karabakh. Saudi Arabia is another fascinating case. Initially Saudi Arabia supported Azerbaijan, but since 2010s, anti-Turkish sentiment resulting in warming of relations with Armenia. Saudi Arabia was the one that helped the United States to finally recognize the Armenian genocide in 2019, and was also the one that imposed economic blockades against both Turkey and Azerbaijan during the Karabakh War of 2020s (which ended with Azerbaijan victorious). Just two years ago, Mohammed Bin Salman welcomed Armenia's President into their country, the first ever visit by an Armenian President to Saudi Arabia despite having no diplomatic ties; yet at the same time refused to invite Aliyev and Erdogan to the event. Saudi Arabia also finances the Kurds against Turkey in both Syria and Iraq, which Ankara despised. Israel is another case, which is interesting here. Israel nurtured an anti-Turkish alliance as far as 2017, which included France, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, Libya (the Benghazi part), Greece, Egypt, UAE, Bulgaria, Jordan and Bahrain, as well as unofficial member India. Mossad chief Yossi Cohen even shocked his guests by naming Turkey and Azerbaijan as major threats for peace in the region after discussion with the Saudis, Egyptians, Emiratis and even the Greeks. While Saudi Arabia is the leader of this alliance, Israel is the mastermind. This deliberate statement deeply upset Azerbaijan, since this reveals that Azerbaijan is seen by Israel as just a lacky of Turkey despite the initially very strong alliance between Baku and Israel and Israel's support for Azerbaijan, partly against Iran. But that changed because of Erdogan and Israel deliberately supported the recognition of Armenian genocide by the US in 2019 and 2021 contributed to this outcome. So far, none of the trio have recognized Karabakh to be independent, but firmly Azerbaijani soil. But if Azerbaijan goes too far, there shall be alert. I think Azerbaijan sees it well and won't go further but will instead apply massive economic and political pressure against Armenia. Still there is a sense that Azerbaijanis are increasingly resentful of Saudi Arabia and Iran, while at the same time they aren't as positive to Israel as used to be. Azerbaijan and Turkey are overall, share the same culture, heritage and history and Azerbaijanis would consider themselves pro-Turkish before anything else.

With Israel, I think you should remember the deportations of 1915 and 1917. A massive network of Jewish resistance attempted to overthrow the Ottoman rule, but this was foiled and the Ottomans retaliated by expelling them. The deportation killed more than 80% of the Jewish deportees and attributed to the hatred against Turkey among Israelis today since it served as the first Holocaust. There are still memorials in Israel toward it. Israel’s alliance with Azerbaijan seems to be based of geopolitical pragmatism rather than anti-Armenian thing. But with Turkey and Azerbaijan refusing to acknowledge any crimes of WWI, it makes no sense for Israel to trust them again. But they need a justification, and Saudi Arabia ironically did them favour, which they seized.

That's true that it is inside internationally recognized borders of Azerbaijan, but their legal claim to Karabakh is actually pretty weak and that does not give them a right to ethnic cleansing and displacing hundreds of thousand people living on their ancestral homeland. The first war happened to prevent exactly this happening in the first place, since Armenians had another example before their eyes - Nakhichevan, an Armenian region from where they were purged with the soft pressure over the years during soviet era and all their cultural and historical heritage was destroyed. Karabakh in fact was never been a part of Azerbaijan Republic, it was a part of soviet Azerbaijan (which wasn't an independent country) as an autonomous region with its own self-governing structures due to Moscow's special policy to create mixed borders with different nations. And they left soviet Azerbaijan via legal referendum and according all soviet laws at the time before the fall of USSR, effectively becoming an independent and directly governed from Moscow. After the fall of USSR Azerbaijan's response was the war, and the rest is histroy. Its really sad, and the worst thing is that the chance of peace is close to zero, since they are now claiming parts of Armenia proper and everything is far from being over.

Idk if it’s just me, but this **REALLY** feels like a shaping operation. It’s very well known how destabilizing mass refugee influxes can be to even fairly large and stable nations, one much more so than Armenia. And when I thought abt it in terms of a shaping operation, the blockade and attack timing makes a lot of sense. They starve the nation creating significantly higher rates of malnutrition, starvation, and overall medical needs in the population that would become refugees from an invasion, and then attack them before any real supplies reaches the population. That way the refugees fleeing to Armenia will individually require much more resources and could potentially have a significant reduction in that 40k number of refugees Armenian said the were ready to take in. Then if they have an overflow of their refugees system, all of which are individually goijg to need even more resources than a healthy refugee, then that will take even more state resources and probably take resources away from being aimed at deterring or defending an invasion into Armenia.

I appreciate your points, and I largely concur with what you've mentioned. However, I'd like to express a differing perspective regarding your analysis of the Zangzor corridor. From my viewpoint, this corridor is intended to serve as a trade route for both goods and people, ultimately benefiting the Armenian economy as it facilitates the transit of goods, gas, and oil from Azerbaijan and Central Asia to Turkey and Europe. Iran's objection to this plan stems from the fact that it would diminish its role as a crucial transit route between Turkey, Europe, and Central Asia. It's worth noting that Iran's IRGC utilizes Armenian territories for the illicit trafficking of drugs from Afghanistan and Pakistan into Europe.

What positive thing comes for Armenia for allowing its two most rapacious enemies to become richer and stronger by allowing the corridor to exist? Also, who is to say wether any of the wealth the corridor creates will be allowed to reach Armenians?

What’s the fate of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh? Well official statements from Azerbaijan state “Somewhere down the line, we will allow some Armenians, those we consider who will be able to live under Azerbaijani government” meanwhile, they renamed one of the roads “Enver pasha” Who was one of the main architects during the 1915 Armenian genocide. Imagine if a once, German conquered city renamed, one of the roads “Adolf Hitler road” Azares are also desecrating Armenian churches that are hundreds of years old. I won’t even going to detail with all the videos of war, crimes showing uniforms very soldiers, committing war crimes, such as dismembering Armenians (while alive) rape of women and children and on and on. All comes down to oil and gas. Not a tear shed for the Armenians. Anyway, thank you for such a well done video and journalism.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but, as long as Azerbaijan refrains from (another) ethnic cleansing or genocide, this might have been the best possible outcome. A quick, clear victory and the complete dissolution of a breakaway republic. So long as it doesn't escalate, it ends a frozen conflict and a humanitarian crisis with comparatively little bloodshed. We can only hope that the corridor remains open for people wishing to leave peacefully. Not that I am a fan of Azerbaijan, but as ending frozen conflicts go, this was about as good as it gets. I don't think this means Azerbaijan will make a play for internationally recognized Armenian territory. Putting down a separatist movement entirely inside their territory is a much different beast than starting an international incident that could bring in Iran and Turkey (since I suspect Russia has already checked out and left the key under the door). It may mean a negotiation for special rights for Armenians in the area in exchange for concessions elsewhere, but I suspect that, over time, the area will change demographically on its own. We will have to wait and see how Azerbaijan integrates the territory, but I won't be surprised if they simply tell everyone they are in charge and arrest/deport anyone who disagrees - especially with the international community watching like hawks for a moment. Unfortunately for Russia, this was likely a death blow to the CSTO as a serious alternative to NATO, but that's on Russia, not Azerbaijan or Armenia.

Another genicide? I dont know what kind of media you follow obviously biased ones but the clensing has been done by armenians but no one talks about it! Why? Because of the lobby community in different countries. Occupying and killing on state level well documented by armenians but your not aware of it. Hocali massacre, old women children tortured and documented by doctors to see how many hours they could survive by different injury people had. Yeah if i had relatives that experienced this god knows what i would do to them

Azerbaijan is a proxy of Turkey a country that doesn't recognize previous genocides and has in their military Doctrine the " softening" of populations - if you understand what that means They even argue that " just removing" populations, adopting their children ect isn't genocide although the international laws state otherwise They can't be trusted

I am afraid this was done in preparation before WW3 that's claimed to happen by the end of this year. Once WW3 starts (God help it doesn't), then Azerbaijan might use the opportunity to seize the Zengezur Corridor, or maybe even more than that. That's the signature of Turks, to use a world crisis to push their goals. They did exactly that during WW1 when they perpetrated the Armenian Genocide.

Some feedback: don't compare CSTO with NATO, they're just different. NATO works, CSTO doesn't. Also, Naxcivan is not "like Nagorno-Karabakh" - "Nagorno-Karabakh" is/was an Armenian enclave inside Azerbaijan, but recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan, Naxcivan is mostly populated with Azerbaijani and also is recognized by international community as part of Azerbaijan, even if separated by Armenia.

Yet Azerbaijanis islam and is sworn enemies w Iran to to point Iran actively and publicly works more w Armenia… And does Azerbaijan pull this off without committing 0 crimes against humanity? do they stop at all or slowly take chunk after chunk until Armenia is divided up and dissolved? the dynamics in this is so strange to me. It's simply an ethno-national conflict rather than a religious one Georgia, another Christian country bordering Turkey & Azerbaijan has brilliant relations with both, on the other hand got some of her lands occupied by a Christian state, Russia. Iran however backs Armenia due to her huge Azerbaijani population concentrated in South Azerbaijan which might break off to join their ethnic kin to the north
