Important to recognise the lack of intervention also. In the fall of Libya, the US had intervened, read it all wrong and Benghazi happened… which was a political disaster. When Syria began to destabilise many western powers wanted to stay out of it. They’d had failures of intervention in Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan, they’d found toppling dictators could lead to a vaccum of power. They’d found that bankrolling opposition (in Afghanistan) could in time turn out to be bankrolling people who’d turn against western imperialism (Al Que da in Afghanistan and September 11) Obama, declared chemical weapons his ‘red line’… if they were used, he’d intervene… but then it happened… over and over again and the political power wasn’t with him. The UN was woeful in their response. After chemical weapons were used by Assad, the UN sent in a team to investigate… not that weapons had been used as everyone knew that, but who had used them. This ‘investigation’ would be draw out… and basically render everyone else impotent. No one could intervene whilst the investigation was ongoing. So yes, I agree that Assad had external support for arms etc… but you have to also understand the geopolitical factors which meant external opposition didn’t come.

As a Syrian, this is absolutely correct. Another thing the regime did was making minorities scared of Sunnis in Syria, and made them feel that if he leaves they will all be persecuted for standing by his side. That’s why mostly his people (the alawaites), who run the military and intelligence services never left his side. Also it doesn’t hurt that they were the rulers of a country, who would give that up after being fed power for 50 straight years

Shared this before but will share again because it is important. I think it’ll be important in the coming years to remember the brutality of the Assad regime and how ultimately like Gaddafi in Libya, Assad couldn’t maintain stability or bring it back to his country. Many people (especially online) white wash Gaddafi now because of how badly Libya descended into further anarchy after he was gone. Since there’s a good chance Syria will follow this path (though not guaranteed as nothing is) I can imagine people trying to do the same thing with Assad. It’s important to keep in mind that these regimes were brutal and were terrible and it was precisely because they were so brutal and terrible that enough people in these countries were willing to rise up and fight for years to bring them down. Much gets made about how the MENA region needs strongmen dictators to keep order but we’ve also seen time and again how these strongmen also seem to fall with regularity as well. Whatever comes next for Syria, if it’s worse or better, the fact remains Assad couldn’t have been the answer to Syria’s problems and never was. If he had been he’d never have fallen and no one would have rebelled against him in the first place.

As somewhat of a geographic essentialist I would argue that a country like Syria, which is to say a desert with borders dictated by mandate after the collapse of the ottoman empire, it is doomed to be an unstable dictatorship until it either gets gobbled up by Turkey (pun intended) or gobbles up the surrounding areas until it reaches stable and economically prosperous borders. This is also true for Libya. Until a strong-man brutal dictatorship returns it is doomed to be a chaotic mess, and the people who say Gaddafi in charge was a better situation were probably correct, because the solution either looks just like gaddafi, or they get gobbled up by Turkey, but most likely a hybrid of those two options. This being said, I too would like them to wind up like Massachusetts, but they don't have the geography to make it happen.

Being brutal doesn't end tyrants. Dictatorships lose their power when they lose their grip of power. Assad family lost after one of the most brutal civil wars in 21st century,Saddam lost when he was directly invaded in 2003 and gaddafi lost because Nato bombed his army to make sure he would lose power. Other dictators that fell weren't either bloodthirsty or puppet of America and at the end of the cold war, they were forced to give up on power(they didn't want to). Look at modern day cuba,it's the neighbor of USA and the regime is still kicking around.

As a forcefully-displaced syrian, i can say with great confidence that it's quite hard to find a regime that's worse than Bashar's, if the devil himself is to rule the new Syria, it can't be worse. Still the country needs to be rebuilt from scratch, and the sanctions against Syria need to be lifted, this gives some leverage to the international community, to keep the new regime checked and to make sure it won't make the country into a "levantian Afghanistan", but to be honest so far it looks so promising, if they kept all the promises they are releasing .. i will go back to Syria immediately even if i have to start from zero all over again.
