This is the best, most honest answer I’ve ever heard Buffet give. Most of the time he waters down his responses or tip-toes around the question - I suppose not to give away too much of Berkshire’s investing secrets. Coca-Cola’s moat would be it’s addictive secret recipe, which is why the brand will stop at nothing to protect it, and why Berkshire was so heavily invested from the get-go.

It's not the recipe that is important these days - it's the brand and what you can do with it. Coca-Cola’s moat is that it has been in the business for so long at such a huge scale that it has a huge resilient base. It can take hits.

its not really the recipe, there are copy cat coke products everywhere, its the brand. You can go to any random village or town and theyll know what coca cola is, that is stunning

The problem is that we as consumers are waking up to the evilness of brands like Coke and people like Buffett. The world has changed!

@@knmfujiwara I also learned recently that Coke dominates via having an extremely robust and elaborate distribution & supply chain, which is extremely hard to replicate. It's scale gives them that leverage - like Red Bull - meaning they stock it at nearly every movie theater, fast food restaurant, gas / service station, and at nearly every grocery market check-out stand across America and many places worldwide.

@@apothe6 Yes, it's that "Coke feeling," which is definitely an element of decades of branding and building the public's trust for a consistently "quality" product (I wouldn't say it's quality myself, it's nutritionally garbage - but people know they get the same product they pay for and expect) as the "trusted" brand. People are not only addicted to the temporary rush they get from the sugar high, but they associate that feeling with the brand Coke - like Marlboro Red cigarettes. See's Candie's and Dairy Queen also appear "wholesome" on their face - but it's the same model of getting customers addicted to a product. Charlie and Warren are probably drooling now that they see how addictive video games are to consumers (aka "players"). The iPhone is the same in it's addictive nature - why Berkshire is the single largest investor / shareholder of Apple, Inc. It's wise as an investor to invest into addictive brands / products that obsolete themselves every year or two, since they can get people to buy / upgrade without having to fully reinvent themselves again and again (a HUGE R&D capital investment).
