Warren was an incredibly underrated genius. Wild, intelligent, unique. Classicly trained. Played piano, essentially all strings, and more. He wrote the songs, mostly by himself. The fact that he was a musician's musician is born out by the overwhelming support by artists who played on his records. Fleetwood Mac. Linda Rondstadt. The Eagles. Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, and on and on. He had a dark black comic sense of humor, but always reached deeper meaning. As observed in your reactions, he will rock you and shock you. He was highly gifted and has changed many people's lives and will never be forgotten. Also try Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School.

Alway loved this album since it first came out. Warren was one of the LA singer/songwriters from the 70's along with Jackson Browne, David Crosby, and John David Souther. They spent a lot of time together with the Eagles, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Neil Young and also Steve Martin and Jack Nicholson. It wouldn't surprise me if Jackson or even Nicholson were among the background voice on the alternate Werewolves take. Jackson Browne is one of America's best songwriters up until today. His album Late For The Sky in particular has some of the deepest lyrical content ever. The Pretender album is also one of my favorites. I think you would like them too.

I didn't realize there were 4 extra songs on the 2007 reissue- My bad., (I will check closer in the future). The truck song was funny. (Warren was quite a drinker in those days). A "Thompson gun" is, of course, the famous Thompson sub-machine gun. Used by gangsters, WW2 soldiers and apparently mercenaries. The "Berkley, and Patty Hearst" line refers to heiress Patty Hearst who was kidnapped by a radical leftist group in the mid '70's. There is a famous photo of her robbing a bank, holding an AK-47. Great reaction.

Fantastic artist. He was a friend of the legendary Rolling Stone reporter Hunter S. Thompson. On later albums, his backing band was R.E.M. ( without Stipe..)

Werewolves of London doesn't have subtext. It was written in 30 minutes of heavy drinking. If you liked this album, check out his self titled one that came prior to this one. It's amazing. His whole discography is good.

When I was in kindergarten I had my mom make me a mix tape to take in for an about-me day (I have always been Like That about music), and I deemed something from this album Necessary. My first choice was "Lawyers, Guns and Money" (still my favorite), which Mom vetoed. My *second* choice was "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner," which, unsurprisingly, Mom also vetoed. XD We compromised on "Johnny Strikes Up the Band." (Luckily I never suggested "Excitable Boy" itself - you nailed the 'boys will be boys' connection, since that's really the logical extreme of never enforcing consequences.)

After Warren died, Crystal Zevon wrote his life story per his wishes. The book is called I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead-the Life and Times of Warren Zevon. His instructions were to tell it straight, good and bad. She did. The book gives a lot of backstory to many of his songs. For example, they lived for a while in Spain with a British mercenary and that was impetus for Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner. I think he cleverly and humorously traced a line from colonialism/revolution/terrorism in Africa, Ireland, Palestine come home to roost in Berkeley. Or maybe he was just having fun. Who knows.

My sister made a mix tape for me in the 80's with Excitable Boy on it. Always funny with a tinge of 'oh crap is this where I'm headed?'

Bruce Springsteen and Warren were boys. Bruce actually played on Warren’s final album. He plays the worst guitar solo known to man, but it’s all Bruce. Also, the original album cover was a pistol and pork chop dinner on a plate. He changed it when Tipper Gore started her anti music crusade in the 90’s.
