If your key won't turn or is stuck, no matter how much you wiggle it, turn the steering wheel, or press the brake, then you might want to try this. But use as a last resort, at your own risk.
This is pretty common in Jeeps, at first my key wont turn in the ignition, but if I wiggling it a little it will eventually work. I have been doing this for over a year now. Until today, no matter how much I wiggle the key, turn the steering wheel, press the brake, it will not turn. I'm totally locked.
So I did some research and found out that it is the lock cylinder that has gone bad and I need to have a local locksmith replace it at a cost of about $120 in parts and $50 in labor. Another option is to tow it to a Jeep dealer and pay over $900 for a entire steering column.
OR
You can just take a hammer or rubber mallet and hit the end of the key, this will bent the copper latch piece allowing you to start your jeep.

We had a blinker problem with our Grand Cherokee and learned that using a rubber mallet to hit under the dash fixed the turn signal. Amazing tip! Thank you. The official directions for installing a new ignition switch and ignition cylinder lock told me i had to drill through the head bolts on the steering column to replace the latter. No way I was going to do that! I knew there had to be an easier way even though my key wouldn't turn. This was the tip I needed. Once i had the key in the ACC position on my 97 Geo Prizm, i was able to insert the pick and depress the pin so I could pull the cylinder out! Really really easy. I'm so glad I decided I could fix this myself. I now have a brand new ignition switch and cylinder and everything is running great. I probably saved myself about 100 to 150 bucks. But not for the faint of heart if you don't like getting your hands greasy!

Tried turning the wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key and it didn't work. Watched this video when I was at my last wit in knowing what to do and said what the heck.... I watched this video and out of desperation, got my mallet out and tapped it three times on the key. The key turned and the car started. Amazing. It worked for me just fine. Thank you, Warren.
@warrenhardy
@warrenhardy 6 жыл бұрын
I love that you pointed out that "Tried turning the wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key and it didn't work" cause I got the odd post on here saying thats the problem. We all have experience the key being locked cause you turned the car off with the wheels turned and the pressure on the lock is preventing it from turning. and yes we all know that you just have to turn the wheel to remove the pressure and the key will turn. But that is not issue with the vast majority of people that have found their way here. They are here because of a bigger issue. and this hammer trick doesn't fix that issue, but it is a temporary cure. Glad it worked out for you and so many others. Cheers

This saved me from costly repairs just this afternoon. My wife failed to keep the wheels straight when parking and the steering wheel locked. I had to ride my bike to get the key in the ignition using this method. No danger of breaking a key if you don't pretend you're Thor. Think "firm taps."

Nov. 1/2020 - yeah!!! We're in Vancouver, Canada. 93 yr. old mom has a Shoprider mobility scooter (7 yrs old now). Today, out of nowhere she could put the key in the ignition, but it wouldn't turn. She was sure someone messed with it as it's a day after Halloween. We doubt that part. We doused the ignition with WD40 but ... the key still wouldn't turn, after an hour. So, we tried this fix - gave it one good whack with a hammer and WHALLA the key turned and she'll be able to go shopping tomorrow as she'd planned! Thanks for the GREAT, INEXPENSIVE fix for a low-income senior. It costs $100 service charge just to have a professional place come to look at her scooter to access the work needed, then the cost of repairs on top of that. Try this fix folks!

I had this same problem with my Toyota Sienna. I tried for hours to get the key to turn without success. I came across your video on KZbin and gave it a shot. This is a standard flat key, not a chip key or anything. I removed the key from my key ring and tapped the end a few times with a steel tire gauge. I then tried to turn the key and voila!, it turned! I sprayed some WD40 in the key slot and tried turning the ignition off then back on a few times and it worked each time. Amazing! Thanks so much for this tip. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best.

I have a mid 2000s Grand Caravan that randomly the key would not turn. May take 5 attempts one time then 100 another of reinserting and twisting before it would turn. Today I could never get it to turn. A few YT videos taught me it is easy and cheap to replace the lock cylinder but it must be turned to near the start position to be removed. Figured I was screwed then came upon this video. At first I had little faith but gave it a try "or should I say WACK as you instructed" It Freaking Worked !!! As long as it works one more time when the ordered replacement cylinder gets here, it will have possibly saved me ether hundreds of dollars and / or many hours to resolve. So yesterday I arrived at un unloading with my truck, stopped on the weighing platform and went to the office to present papers, come back to the truck and the key doesn't fully enter the ignition and I can't start the truck. The company has only one weighing platform and every truck has to be weighed when he gets in and out. So I'm now stuck on the platform and worse, no-one can load or do deliveryes since the platform is now blocked by me, I tried about 40 minutes to start the truck but nothing, I was waiting for the repair service to come and while I was waiting for them and telling other angry truckers that the platform will soon be freed ( not very probable since to replace the thing where you put the key would take a while) so I checked on the internet to see if there is any solution and found this video, needless to say it didn't work :( Just kidding, it worked immediately and I can't thank you enough for saving my ass

when I had the same problem it turned out to be shavings from the key being put in and taken out, over time, building up and sitting in there, gumming up the lock. Striking it would make the metal shavings loosen but if that's the case here your lock will jam again once they resettle in a few weeks. I just put paper towel on the carpet below then sprayed a generous amount of lock lubricant in to flush it out, then a blast of air from a keyboard cleaner compressed air can. It cleaned it out without taking anything apart or hitting anything with mallets.

What type of lock lubricant did you use by chance?!
@KarmaTiger
@KarmaTiger 7 жыл бұрын
I think I used lock de-icer, but any spray lubricant with the straw type nozzle will do - WD-40 would work fine. Remember to blast it out with an air can after.
@crispybacon7937

The issue isn't lubrication nor is it metal shavings. The issue is a worn out key. Just like breaks, if you let those wear out too long, you end up damaging your rotors. With a key, if you let it wear down too much, you can wear out your ignition. There is a bar inside the ignition cylinder that is most likely not fully retracting and not allowing the cylinder to rotate. A "new" key, (not a shiny copy of a worn key) will allign the parts in the lock correctly to allow cylinder rotation. However, a worn key that has been ignorred or hit with hammners may be damaged where even a new key can't fix it. When this happens, its time to replace the cylinder. Contact your local locksmith if you experience this problem.
@KarmaTiger
@KarmaTiger 7 жыл бұрын
yeah nevermind I had this same problem and metal shavings were the issue, jamming the cylinders, and once cleaned out it solved the problem. Nope, it can't possibly be that thing that happened. BTW brakes are b-r-a-k-e-s, not b-r-e-a-k-s.
@crispybacon7937
@crispybacon7937 7 жыл бұрын
Autocorrect doesn't always choose the correct word. Also, I make a good living helping people fix problems just like this. There may be metal shavings in your ignition jamming up your lock, but the reason the shavings got in there is because something is worn, either the key or the tumblers in the lock. Producing metal shavings is not a natural function of using a lock. Speaking of brakes, if your brakes were sparking every time you applied pressure on them, you wouldn't say it's a normal function of brakes and to just spray WD40 on them, would you? Hammering a cylinder is absolutely acceptable method of solving the immediate problem of getting your car to start, but that doesn't mean there isn't a problem.

Hi everyone...Warren I couldn't believe that you were basically talking about the same way my key was reacting ,it felt like the key wasn't going in enough...broke down yesterday and for love nor money I couldn't get the key to turn ,had breakdown come out and he still couldn't do anything. So I tried this ,and you guessed it...it works..had to use a hammer ,didn't want to but that is all I had ,hit it about 4 times and hayprestow ...still can feel that there is still something catching slightly but who cares...Thank you once again Warren..

This happened to me this morning. Went to move the truck so I can take the trash to the curve for disposal..... I was like.... Well.... maybe I haven't woken up yet, so I tried again nothing. Maybe the steering wheel was locked.... nope nothing, so I said forget it. Picked up the trash can which is very heavy push it over the truck slid it down on the side of the truck and rolled it to the Curve!!!! Saw this video.... could find a doggone hammer for the life of me.... so I had a old door knob that I removed from one of my doors in my home.... Hit it twice and it turned... You are amazing. Everyone BEFORE doing this try pressing your foot on the break, turn your steering wheel to the left a little and hold the steering wheel in that position as you gently jiggle your key back and forth while also pushing the key inward. If that doesn't work than I'd try this as a last resort.

You should try using a silicone degreaser first something like a Rust buster WD-40 type that can lubricate the cylinder first. You might have a safer more permanent results

My thoughts exactly at 1st, I tried some PB Blaster then coated my key w blaster and dusted the key with dry graphite powder. No dice. Key seemed to go in on a slight upwards angle. Hmm I'll give this method a shot. I just need to turn it once to get the Cylinder pin exposed to remove it and put a new one in.....

Jacki Velez it's actually easier if you hold the key like if your turning it to the on position and with a screwdriver that has a rubber handle you can use that. what it does it mmhelps release any debri that may be in their or a stuck wafer that sometimes it may jam due to the fact of dirt and not enough grease inside the cylinder. I use to buy some cans from ace when I was a locksmith they like 1.50 power lube, that makes wonders on all locks. If you spray a little bit just use the key to turn it once or twice and you should see some dirt or carbon on the tip of the key.

Not necessarily lol. The 1st gen Honda pilots have this issue. I'm debating on taking a mallet to mine (temp fix as that cannot be good for too long without other components breaking down due to the damage from the hit.) Since they all work together in this lock, cant destroy one part of it with a mallet without having something else be affected usually. Will probably just go for a more permanent fix by either replacing the mechanism myself DIY or calling a locksmith.
