Reiner has confirmed dissociative identity disorder. He has 2 egos soldier and warrior. In this scene, under unbearable built up guilt, he dissociated from soldier alter to warrior alter and outed himself and Bertholdt by accident as we can tell that it wasnt purposefull from his reaction when soldier alter came back. Later in the forest Ymir discribes his mental state quite well to Eren and Bertholdt knew about Reiner's disorder. Bert even asked him later when they were in the forest: "Reiner, who am i talking to now, soldier or warrior?" to what Reiner replies: "Calm down! Im warrior, alright?"

There was one clue about Reiner that they didn't reveal for some reason. Before he jumped off his horse to attack Annie, he purposefully removed his hood. Probably so that she would know that it's him, and grasp him in her hand so he could write the message. If she didn't know who it was, she might have reacted differently.

People need to understand that he's torn at the fact that two of his friends, in which he trained with for years, are responsible for the death of his mother along with many others, and the destruction of where he lived.

Eren was traumatized and he couldn’t control his emotions when two of his friends that he considered siblings turned out to be the killers of many innocent lives, INCLUDING HIS MOM. And you expect him to think rationally on the spot? He is not Levi or Erwin, he is still a kid. You can’t blame him for having a moment of shock and sudden realization of the lies of his (once) friends. In fact, him acting like a “dumbass” just proves that he is still human and prone to pain, like all of us. Just think of the world they live in and what they have discovered...you wouldn’t be a flawless rational thinker either. Season 3 and people still don’t understand these characters.

This episode is always so heartbreaking to watch, you have to remember that they (the 104th cadet squad) trained for three years together. They roomed together, ate together, survived together and, to figure out that the people you considered brothers are responsible not just for the death of your mother, but the death of 10's of thousands of people is devastating. Which is why Eren hesitated to transform because, like with Annie, he didn't want to believe his own comrades are the enemies and not the mindless titans they've been fighting. When you watch as the seasons come out (i've read the manga) you'll come to understand that everyone is a victim in AOT, it's not just black and white, bad guys vs. good guys, which is what really separates AOT from anything else like it, because you can sympathize with everyone and understand multiple perspectives.

Love watching reactions to this. Reiner is such a conflicted character, you have to remember they were children when they broke the walls down originally, the same age Eren and Mikasa were back then, and didn't really understand what they were being told to do. Reiner going off about how he didn't understand that there were good people inside the walls and how if he knew he wouldn't have become "such a half-assed piece of shit". His words are pretty powerful there. As for you guys' theories, you're getting there, but there are still a lot of things you're wrong about. The next arc that they're animating is going to have a LOT of answers, but Attack on Titan is pretty good with the 'one question gets answered and 10 more questions reveal themselves' form of storytelling.

DARKgirafa I didn't spoil anything actually, just stating that I like how Reiner doubts himself here. To others, If you rewatch the series, he actually doubts himself earlier as well. Rewatching all the scenes where Bertholt and Reiner are present up to this point is actually super interesting, and more so if you include Annie's scenes in it too. A lot of the things they say/said have extra meaning that you better understand on a second watching. Example, in episode 13 of the original series, there is a moment in the second half, where Annie is walking through the streets looking at the dead bodies and saying "I'm sorry" to them. Her doing that has a WHOLE new meaning after you learn several episodes later that she's a titan and likely could have saved them all.

I never seen it mentioned, but the shot at 7:47 of bertholdt against the backdrop the sky always struck me as cool because it shows how bertholdt DOES actually look like the colossal titan. Especially since there is nothing close to compare his size to in the shot, you can almost imagine bertholdt being colossal size.
