Back in the '80s, everything in my life is back in the '80s It seems :-) , I heard that there were loads of Polish people in Chicago. At the time I had not been in Chicago but we did have to change planes at O'Hare. And we had to wait for a while because some other flight to Denver was being diverted and joining us. It was a plain full of really happy people from the West Coast. We were from Boston. They were wide awake! We just wanted to go to sleep. But really that's not my point. These days many flights don't land until 2:00 a.m. . In the snow. After we had just left Boston with a balmy tropical 80° post hurricane Gloria. Also not my point I just noticed when I was in the airport that somebody was being paged in Polish. That's all I remember because it was 1985. But I think I found it exciting at the time. The next year I married a man who asked me not to speak to him in foreign languages. Or large words. That lasted 8 years...

I'm pretty sure I live in the suburbs. Not the boonies. And I actually didn't mean it to argue with you. I'm from Boston and now I live between Clearwater and St Pete. Our backyards are not large and our houses are closer together than where I grew up, but our house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms and to me that's novel. Also it's one story. After a few years of living here I went to Ford's theater and I was down in the basement where the bathrooms were and our seats were in the balcony that time and By the time I cleaned all those stairs my legs were burning and I couldn't breathe. Not good! My mother told me they didn't have stairs in Florida. Of course they do but they also have elevators. And my apartment back home was on the second floor. One of my apartments in Boston road the third floor of a triple decker. I don't spend well really anytime in the city that I'm pretty sure it's not as advanced as this and public transit around here is so bad the newspaper wrote an article about it. In Boston it's better but it's broken down and always late and I'm just taking this from my friend's Facebook posts. Maybe they are finally improving it? Or maybe they're still running trains from the '70s and '80s? They were announcing expansion of some of the lines to places I had never heard of. Turns out It was Somerville. I haven't been on a bus, except in DC, since 1999. I don't really remember the buses in DC but I do remember that I would have enjoyed the very pretty snow much better had I brought some boots with me. It's just they don't fit in my suitcase...

I've always heard from people living in Warsaw that you can pretty much stay your whole life in the same district and don't move outside of its boundaries because you have everything you need there like each district is a self-sufficient city on its own as in you don't need to go to the city center for shopping, restaurants, cafes, sports activities, parks, etc.
@LadyRevania2 жыл бұрын
Not at all! I live in Targówek and go to Praga quite a lot (mainly because we have better transportation there than to the other part of the district), but I don't know the left side of the city very well, so I go to a only few places there regularly (mainly in the downtown/centrum), that's it. We mostly travel somewhere else for work, but it's not true we don't go to the city center. Sometimes you need to buy something specific and there might be just a few shops having it and it's not in your district... or a specific place you want to go to.
@rookiethegoat2 жыл бұрын
I would say that every district is lacking in some way. I'm living all my life in Śródmieście Południowe and i always moving around between "left side of the river" districts for uni (Powiśle) now for work (Wola), bigger grocery shopping (Mokotów/Ursynów/Wola) or partying in City Centre. Warsaw districts are connected this way that you'll probably don't know where there begins or ends so i would say that you can comfortably live in one and use 3 districts perks daily. Also i don't know much about right part of Warsaw like Praga, Grochów etc. i mostly visit these parts for bike rides or visiting my friends. When i was little it that part was dangerous now it's cool to live there. So living in Warsaw you can say that left and right sides are self-sufficient.

I think by "democratic" you rather meant "egalitarian". It's not a full picture tho. Places you visit and use are mostly used by the middle class, however Warsaw is much more diverse than this. Places like shopping centers are full of middle class shops and services but there are no high end services or luxurious boutiques there. It doesn't mean that there are no such places in Warsaw and if you look well enough I will easily find gyms for USD100 per month with a private parking for your Ferrari, sauna inside and other high end commodities. Same goes with food... There are restaurants like Milk Bars (Bary Mleczne) where you can get a soup for next to nothing, middle class restaurants and also high end, posh places where a bowl of soup is like PLN 40-60. When it comes to shopping/groceries you generally don't get low quality stuff but in cheaper places (like Biedronka) you have a limited choice of products. If you go to something like Kaufland, Auchan (don't... they still operate in Russia) or Tesco, the quality will be similar but range of products will be wider. And obviously you can also find expensive delis with really fancy and high quality food but these tend to be expensive. You just need to know what and where to look for but it comes with experience :)

Guys, maybe let's not compare who suffered more while the bombs in Ukraine are still dropping. It's a bit inappropriate...you know, with the threat of nuclear weapons and while the russian child rap*st dog eating soldiers are still out there trying to kill as many civilians are they possibly can. Poland suffered a lot but it's not a contest, so maybe let's stay positive...at the end of the day Ukrainians might be reading it while their families are still freezing hungry in the basements. What our grandparents lived through about 80 years ago is happening to them TODAY. Let's show more emotional support.

Another wonderful video. Always love to listen to your observations. It was nice to see you stop by and support a little neighborhood grocery store. Warsaw is indeed very vibrant, diverse in architecture, clean and the transportation system is top notch. It is also a very green city. You and Marina will enjoy it even more soon when everything starts blooming and the cafe life spills outdoors. Btw, that Strefa restaurant you walked by on Prożna Street looks amazing. I had to look it up. The menu seems to be a creative blend of Polish and other cusine. Can't wait on another video!

It is refreshing to see Warsaw through your eyes :) I love the city more because of that. Before the pandemics I worked as a freelancer for some time living with my wife and a little daughter in a similar size appartment in Śródmieście. I had to work outside alot, as my wife, an academic, did plenty work at home and more often than not had classes in the afternoon. Warsaw is a great city for that kind of life: there is a multitude of places, both coffe shops and restaurants, where you can charge your laptop and sit for hours getting something to eat and drink from time to time. From May to September it is warm enough that I took my kid to a daycare and then go to a park to noon. There I did a workout in an open air gym, sit on a bench for an hour or two working on my laptop and when the sun would get too strong - head to coffee shop or restaurant. If I had to work longer and the weather was poor (the storms in August can be really strong), I went to... Pizza Hut. In Warsaw they have locals made for working clients with isolated coaches and often two elctrical outlets so you can charge both laptop and phone. And of course there were a refill drinks for about 3-4$ (no it is probably a little more). Good times.

Also: you have a direct bus from where you live to the Solec Public Hospital which has a great maternity ward. 127 to Jaracza bus stop. Marina should check the place out. You seem to stay in Warsaw for longer, so you should plan for that - and having a direct bus ride to the place she will stay for few days or even weeks will be a convenience as you have Mosia to think about too.

The downtown is not the real business center of Warsaw. There are two main business areas. One is Wola near Daszyński roundabout and Prosta street and the other is Służewiec, that is called by natives: Mordor. It's because , as you can see - Warsaw has a really good public transportation, but not in Mordor. There is no Metro only a couple of buses and trams that is not enough for all the people working there. And Mordor is rather far from the city center and there is almost always a big traffic jam. The beautiful area you have enjoyed after work is the Grzybowski square, revitalized just a couple years ago.

@@monikakacprzak4721 How I yearned for those sorts of things back in the '80s when I was freezing my hands and feet off despite my mittens and boots, in Boston and on the North Shore. I don't think that I could even imagine the smartphones, but I could imagine them putting an ETA up on the bus stop signs somehow. It would have been nice to know if I had just missed it and was going to have to wait in the rain for an hour because the next one was going to be late. That actually happened the last time I took a bus, One bus of two, a few days before I got my first car in 1999 when I was 40 years old. But I had years of experience and I knew enough to bring dry clothes in a waterproof bag so that I could change when I arrived, because there was nothing in this world that was going to keep dry. Then I went to the movies with the guy who couldn't pick me up because he was still working and he gave me a ride home. Oh wait, I also had to take the bus in DC. Same thing except it was snowing that time. And the wait was shorter. And the snow turned into rain. But that time I only needed a change of shoes and stockings. That was 2008 and they still weren't up to speed with the letting you know when it's going to be there... Hmmm... And by then I had a flip phone. Not that that would do any good.

Better taste, last much longer fresh in fridge, and usually did not cost much. Also buy meat in local butcher stores like "Zielonka", or family-business stores located in local marketplaces. Maybe they don't always look so "European", but they are place of many top quality products from local small-business.
