Roughly six weeks ago we crossed the border from Ukraine to Poland after Russia invaded Ukraine. After living in various places around Poland, we decided to make Warsaw our home.

Back in the '80s, everything in my life is back in the '80s It seems :-) , I heard that there were loads of Polish people in Chicago. At the time I had not been in Chicago but we did have to change planes at O'Hare. And we had to wait for a while because some other flight to Denver was being diverted and joining us. It was a plain full of really happy people from the West Coast. We were from Boston. They were wide awake! We just wanted to go to sleep. But really that's not my point. These days many flights don't land until 2:00 a.m. . In the snow. After we had just left Boston with a balmy tropical 80° post hurricane Gloria. Also not my point I just noticed when I was in the airport that somebody was being paged in Polish. That's all I remember because it was 1985. But I think I found it exciting at the time. The next year I married a man who asked me not to speak to him in foreign languages. Or large words. That lasted 8 years...

May I make a video topic request - can you please make a video of the gear you use to make videos? I know you have a smartphone, obviously. What is the selfie stick you use? Also, do you use any other gear? When you walk down the street, do you just hold your phone or do you have a phone holder of some sort, or do you have a GoPro? The local stores are sometimes a great place to buy farm products, so yes, keep checking them out. As far as where to live in Warsaw - you're doing the right thing checking out places. Do remember about the green areas and areas that would be good for walking around with the baby stroller. If Marina is like other East European ladies, she'll likely be taking the baby for a lot of walks. (By the way, will she be able to get a maternity leave from the bank? I certainly hope so!)

I go everywhere by bike, most of the time (I also live in Ochota) but it takes me only 5 mins to drop my kid to the daycare by car while if I wanted to take a bus or walk it would be 25-30 mins one way (with walks to and from bus included).

The downtown is not the real business center of Warsaw. There are two main business areas. One is Wola near Daszyński roundabout and Prosta street and the other is Służewiec, that is called by natives: Mordor. It's because , as you can see - Warsaw has a really good public transportation, but not in Mordor. There is no Metro only a couple of buses and trams that is not enough for all the people working there. And Mordor is rather far from the city center and there is almost always a big traffic jam. The beautiful area you have enjoyed after work is the Grzybowski square, revitalized just a couple years ago.

It is refreshing to see Warsaw through your eyes :) I love the city more because of that. Before the pandemics I worked as a freelancer for some time living with my wife and a little daughter in a similar size appartment in Śródmieście. I had to work outside alot, as my wife, an academic, did plenty work at home and more often than not had classes in the afternoon. Warsaw is a great city for that kind of life: there is a multitude of places, both coffe shops and restaurants, where you can charge your laptop and sit for hours getting something to eat and drink from time to time. From May to September it is warm enough that I took my kid to a daycare and then go to a park to noon. There I did a workout in an open air gym, sit on a bench for an hour or two working on my laptop and when the sun would get too strong - head to coffee shop or restaurant. If I had to work longer and the weather was poor (the storms in August can be really strong), I went to... Pizza Hut. In Warsaw they have locals made for working clients with isolated coaches and often two elctrical outlets so you can charge both laptop and phone. And of course there were a refill drinks for about 3-4$ (no it is probably a little more). Good times.

Wow malls are still popular in Poland! Malls that aren’t doing well in the US are closing.
@pamelajaye2 жыл бұрын
So it is not just me that thinks that? I also saw some or at least one malls in Russia on KZbin. Actually two different people I think. I could have watched a lot more of people showing various stores being closed. But I think two was enough. Around here we mostly have shopping centers now. Even 20 years ago. When I got here my mother told my brother to take me to the mall and he said "we only have two." So he took me to one. Everything is more expensive and I'd rather just go to Target. Especially since most of the bookstores are gone. And bookstores are dangerous to my wallet anyway. So now we have large parking lot areas with freestanding stores - including Target. I heard on the news yesterday I think that there are actually three Kmarts left in the US. I kind of liked their clothes. But the one that was near us looked so ancient, it was depressing to go there. The checkout aisles were narrow. Also it was my first experience with self-checkout. It didn't go well. I didn't do it after that. It kept telling me I had more items. I didn't. Maybe the situation has improved but if there are still cashiers in a store I would prefer to keep them employed. On the other hand when it comes to banks I've been going to ATMs since at least 1980. Probably before that.

I just hope you both can find city or place that you both fall in love with, feel at peace with. To be your home away from home. They may have 2 bdrm.apartment,2 family home or house to rent. In some places you go its cheaper to rent either a 2 family home, single family than apartment and other place it's the opposite& some, it's less expensive or the same price a of 2 bdrm but a 3 bedroom apartment. The reason is because of demand. If it's a high demand for 2 bedroom than 3 it will show up on price. At least here in Jersey City NJ , it is. They do credit check,a letter from your previous owner,of recommendation and either your 4 pay stubs or your income tax return. You must make at least 2x -2 1/2 x the rent. How is it in Poland? What is the average rent price range for 2 to 3 bedroom in Poland. Please keep an open mind. Check also for duplex, single family home, instead a 2 bdrm,an 3 bedroom apartment or home. You might find 3 bedroom for the price of 2bedroom. Happy hunting & good luck.Also , may you always find good paying, with medical insurance and permanent job easily.

I think by "democratic" you rather meant "egalitarian". It's not a full picture tho. Places you visit and use are mostly used by the middle class, however Warsaw is much more diverse than this. Places like shopping centers are full of middle class shops and services but there are no high end services or luxurious boutiques there. It doesn't mean that there are no such places in Warsaw and if you look well enough I will easily find gyms for USD100 per month with a private parking for your Ferrari, sauna inside and other high end commodities. Same goes with food... There are restaurants like Milk Bars (Bary Mleczne) where you can get a soup for next to nothing, middle class restaurants and also high end, posh places where a bowl of soup is like PLN 40-60. When it comes to shopping/groceries you generally don't get low quality stuff but in cheaper places (like Biedronka) you have a limited choice of products. If you go to something like Kaufland, Auchan (don't... they still operate in Russia) or Tesco, the quality will be similar but range of products will be wider. And obviously you can also find expensive delis with really fancy and high quality food but these tend to be expensive. You just need to know what and where to look for but it comes with experience :)

In Ochota you stay very close to where I used to live as a student :) It wasn't Alcatraz, mind you (Warsaw University of Technology student dorm in inter-war massive building next to Narutowicz Plaza). I remember that neighborhood fondly, especially the tiny hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese bar next to Kopińska Hall and the local veggie market right next to them. I wonder if that place still exists? Oh, and also I had a similar feeling about Warsaw in general - the longer I lived there the more I've liked it! That city just grows on you in many, tiny ways.
@comdo8312 жыл бұрын
28:23 Those are examples of the very few pre-WWII buildings in the city center still existing today. They have been nicely renovated, with the original cobblestone street preserved. Pretty much all of the Warsaw center was blasted to pieces during the war, some in fighting, a lot intentionally. If somebody thinks Ukrainian cities have got it bad now, it's nothing compared to what our German friends can do when they fall into a demolition frenzy.

@@ColinH1973 Hotel "Bristol" next to the old town is original. So are few apartment houses in the city center next to the main train station. Then there is what you see in this video. There isn't much, but a few buildings here and there have survived. Most of them survived because the German army used them to house the military personnel.

Guys, maybe let's not compare who suffered more while the bombs in Ukraine are still dropping. It's a bit inappropriate...you know, with the threat of nuclear weapons and while the russian child rap*st dog eating soldiers are still out there trying to kill as many civilians are they possibly can. Poland suffered a lot but it's not a contest, so maybe let's stay positive...at the end of the day Ukrainians might be reading it while their families are still freezing hungry in the basements. What our grandparents lived through about 80 years ago is happening to them TODAY. Let's show more emotional support.

For shopping, as you live in Ochota you should visit Zieleniak next to Hala Banacha. There are many products that you will not get in supermarkets. This is a kind of small bazaar. Especially good for fruits and vegetables. Saturday is the best day to visit. In Warsaw, you could go to Hala Mirowska. That bazaar is bigger. If you miss eastern cuisine, a few hundred meters from your place at Grójecka street you will find Baboshka restaurant, run by a Polish-Ukrainian couple. You have excellent coffee Green Cafe Nero at the end of the street you live (Slupecka?) at Grójecka street. Good for remote work.

From what I've seen of your videos since you've been in Warsaw, it looks even more advanced than where l live in the states. Transportation looks really nice. Not like the crap we have here. I get on a local train here and I feel like I'm still getting on a train from the 1970's.

I'm pretty sure I live in the suburbs. Not the boonies. And I actually didn't mean it to argue with you. I'm from Boston and now I live between Clearwater and St Pete. Our backyards are not large and our houses are closer together than where I grew up, but our house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms and to me that's novel. Also it's one story. After a few years of living here I went to Ford's theater and I was down in the basement where the bathrooms were and our seats were in the balcony that time and By the time I cleaned all those stairs my legs were burning and I couldn't breathe. Not good! My mother told me they didn't have stairs in Florida. Of course they do but they also have elevators. And my apartment back home was on the second floor. One of my apartments in Boston road the third floor of a triple decker. I don't spend well really anytime in the city that I'm pretty sure it's not as advanced as this and public transit around here is so bad the newspaper wrote an article about it. In Boston it's better but it's broken down and always late and I'm just taking this from my friend's Facebook posts. Maybe they are finally improving it? Or maybe they're still running trains from the '70s and '80s? They were announcing expansion of some of the lines to places I had never heard of. Turns out It was Somerville. I haven't been on a bus, except in DC, since 1999. I don't really remember the buses in DC but I do remember that I would have enjoyed the very pretty snow much better had I brought some boots with me. It's just they don't fit in my suitcase...

I recommend You to buy vegetables in local small grocery stores (warzywniak), they are way much better quality than Biedronka/Carrefour/Lidl/ect.... Better taste, last much longer fresh in fridge, and usually did not cost much. Also buy meat in local butcher stores like "Zielonka", or family-business stores located in local marketplaces. Maybe they don't always look so "European", but they are place of many top quality products from local small-business.

By the way, as Biedronka fan, you have to know, that we have a slang name for it: Biedra :) Biedronka is ladybug, as you probably know, but Biedra means nothing, this word is not exist, its just an imaginary transformation, kind of shortcut. For me its very funny word. Many people name it this way in unofficial language.

Warsaw is a bit like Philly, a bit like Manhattan and a bit like a typical European city I guess but like you said it's a little bit of this, a little bit of that. One of Polish architects called Warsaw a Frankenstein because of so many completely different parts it consists of. I couldn't agree more with him. For you, who was living in Kiev it would be nice to compare a bit between 2 capitals, not to make any of those cities look better or worse but I am interested in similarities and differences between Poland and Ukraine in terms of their capitals. It would be nice to know what I can find in Kiev that we have in Warsaw.

I always enjoy your walkabouts and commentary. I worked in Washington, DC for six years. I have only seen videos of Warsaw on KZbin. I don't see the litter, the graffiti, the awful traffic, the pothole filled roads in Warsaw that I put up with in DC. It is obvious that Warsaw has better restaurants. The best food in DC, in my experience, was Armand's Pizza and the kielbasa and pierogi served at the Polish Embassy open house.
@pamelajaye2 жыл бұрын
I saw the graffiti. But you're right, no litter no traffic no potholes! And of course in Boston the streets were made from what used to be cow paths. I Don't even know whether that's true but I've always heard it. It doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason. Meanwhile in Florida, people don't stop for pedestrians, even if they're in crosswalks, And they have the light. It's so bad they make PSAs about it.
