I watched this documentary a while ago on another channel, and I always thought that this is the best forensic battlefield video that I have seen. It was very thorough, interesting and definitive. The Canadians rightfully should receive credit for killing the Black Baron.

I read somewhere that the Sherbrooke Fusiliers were engaged in heavy action after this encounter and suffered major casualties. I rather suspect that whoever it was in the Sherbrooke Fusiliers that fired the fatal shot(s) that killed Michael Wittmann did not survive the war and this was also part of the reason it took so long for people to figure out who must have fired the shots.

@Hoa Tattis Watch the video again. At 11:12, Sgt. Joe Ekins of the 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry starts talking about knocking out three Tiger tanks from the far side of where the group of Tiger tanks were. As the video documentary goes on to show, none of these three Tigers were the one that was Wittman's tank. At 38:26, Radley Walters, a Retired General and survivor of the Sherbrooke Fusiliers, talks about the remainder of Wittmann's group of Tigers coming down the road (they were on the OTHER side of the group of Tigers that Joe Ekins was shooting at and were not visible to him because of the slope of the terrain). It was this group of Sherman tanks, closest to Wittmann's tank, that knocked his tank out and killed him. Walters specifically says "other people from my squad fired at them", but never says who exactly. He probably didn't know, given the nature of combat and the fact that nobody knew that it was Wittmann's tank they had blown up. I don't remember where I read this, but I do recall that the Sherbrooke Fusiliers not long after suffered heavy casualties in combat, and it is likely that whoever fired the shots that killed Wittmann did not survive that action. Or, if they did, they have since died well before all this interest in what happened with Wittmann came to light. And so the exact tank and gunner who killed Michael Wittmann has been lost to history, but this documentary pretty much proves that it was somebody from the Sherbrooke Fusiliers.

The thing that caught my eye was the survey equipment. I use the same equipment this surveyor had but for one item. The Leica Total Station had a GPS Antenna 📡 which made it into smart station. The funky prism is identical to the one I use. Here in Canda that equipment would be 40 to.50 thousand dollars.

What mystery? I got as far as 11:11 and the answer is right there. Joe Ekins killed Wittmann in a modified Sherman tank retrofitted with a 76.2 mm British '17 pounder' anti tank gun dubbed firefly's due to the tremendous plum of fire produced when fired. At night the flash of fire would temporarily blind anyone who did not close their eyes when it went off. Mystery solved, tank gunner Joe Ekins destroyed four tanks on 8 August 1944 near St. Aignan de Cramesnil, France, including the Tiger commanded by Michael Wittmann. In 1985 after much research comparing battle reports, Les Taylor former member of the 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry, stated Ekins was responsible for destroying Wittmann's tank. Ken Tout, also a member of the 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry, credited Ekins. Other historians have also asserted Ekins fired the fatal round.

This is my theory. A combination of rocket firing Typhoons and tank fire from the Sherbrookes on Wittmans flank. Typhoon pilots roving around looking for targets would strike already destroyed or disabled tanks repeatedly. It is my belief that a Sherbrooke firefly hit Witmann from point blank range. 50 yds or so. on his left side. He couldn’t miss.

I doubt it was a Typhoon. None of the allied tankers present that day mention Typhoons and I'm pretty sure they'd remember. Also, a Typhoon firing rockets...known to not be the most accurrate...so close to Allied tanks was probably frowned upon. I think it was a Canadian Sherman that knocked out Tiger 007.

The greatest threat to German armor on Western front from lead up to D-Day til VE Day was the anti-armor rockets designed and deployed by the RAF. Almost exclusively carried by the Typhoons. Not a well known fact.

Technically, Whitman’s commander was mostly responsible for his death, because they sent these men out for a counter attack without the usual reconnaissance, and the enemy was waiting for them, if they did the reconnaissance, they would have possibly seen the ambush being set up, and most likely, Whitman would have come up with a battle plan that could ruined the Allie’s plans.

They built him up til he had no choice. The highest scoring german tanker got it on the last day. Now the highest scoring fighter ace probably fought past the deadline and came out on top Eric Hartman. Germany wasted their best guys, they should have been training new guys. It's kind of morbid but it's interesting when they dig up battlefields up to a thousand years old. I saw one recently from the oregon trail found lots of buttons and 2 gold coins, I love gold! 143 - 150 m distance from da Canadian position to Wittmans tank n 903m from British position to Wittmans plus Wittmans tank was below the highline from the British position would strongly imply from all forensic evidence shown that the Canadians did indeed knock out Wittmans tiger. The Canadians Sherman's even without a firefly at the close distance that they were to Wittmans tiger could easily take out a tiger tank. A good doco with fabulous overhead n ground level views. Well done the presenters n well done the Canadians. Sorry raf typhoons n British tankers. Now YOU need to present as compelling forensic evidence as this doco to dispute this doco. does not work that way it is a team work but Wittmann lost his gunner and that probably played big part in his demise ....Balthasar Woll was in a hospital wounded ......he could anticipate Witmann's next order and had the gun already traced there

One of his successful gunners was Balthasar Woll or also called "Bobby Woll". He was the only tank gunner of the Waffen SS awarded with the Iron Cross. He was not part of the tank crew that day (08th August 1944) Michael Wittmann died.

I think Nick Moran got so sick of Tiger fanbois, rightly so, that he became so pro Sherman that he is willing to ignore the testimony of the Uk/Can tankers around Caen, complains about 75mm shells bouncing, then having their driver and loaders heads cut off by a 88mm. He is right about production, transport, not often meeting armor. But when they did hit a big cat, a 75mm Sherman was obviously completely inferior.

One of his successful gunners was Balthasar Woll or also called "Bobby Woll". He was the only tank gunner of the Waffen SS awarded with the Iron Cross. He was not part of the tank crew that day (08th August 1944) Michael Wittmann died.
