Just want to say a big THANK YOU Mark for so engagingly giving me a treasured lesson about my original home, Hong Kong. I am a military history enthusiast, and have read and heard about the events of 1941. But your audio programs, including the earlier one on the battle itself, is just miles better in giving one a full understanding of the events than anything originating locally, in Chinese or English, that I had come across! Thank you!

I arrived in Hong Kong in 1960 aged 4. I grew up in Mt. Nicholson. I explored Blacks Link and found the evidence of the fierce fighting. Sad, but fascinating. Rifles, rusted solid, mortar bombs, whigwhams of 5 .303 bullets in a small cave, still waiting to be loaded. This story puts a lot of answers to exactly what happened.

derring-do [ˌderiNGˈdo͞o] NOUN dated humorous derring-do (noun) action displaying heroic courage. "tales of derring-do" ORIGIN late 16th century: from late Middle English dorryng do ‘daring to do’, used by Chaucer, and, in a passage by Lydgate based on Chaucer's work, misprinted in 16th-century editions as derrynge do; this was misinterpreted by Spenser to mean ‘manhood, chivalry’, and subsequently taken up and popularized by Sir Walter Scott.

Bryan Perrett includes a brief account of the MTBs of Hong Kong in "The Battle of the Torpedo Boats." In his telling, the British were treated to a feast by a warlord part-way through their overland journey; the feast almost ended badly when the famished British committed a major faux pas by devouring the dishes of rice placed before them at the end of the feast that, by custom, were to be politely declined as a way of thanking the host for his generosity. Fortunately, the situation was resolved and honour restored.

The Communist guerrilla encounter as recalled gives credence to the scholarly evidence/argument that Chinese communists did *not* fight the Japanese, but were armed thugs fermenting until the KMT was exhausted from fighting the Japanese. There was even evidence of them doing back room deals with Japanese, possibly Mao himself involved. Compare that to the honor, camaraderie and fellowship of the KMT liaisons who helped the British combatants to defend, to “negotiate” and evacuate toward friendly territory. You can draw inference to the current geopolitical status: Communist Mainland China vs Taiwan- which would come to you aid in honor, and which would ask for quip pro quo. Communists in 1940 isn’t much different from 2020 version in mainland China.
