The comparison to Chess feels spot on. I took up Chess in earnest a couple years ago. Actually learned the rules (mostly by losing to a coworker) and decided to play online or at work almost every day. I got good enough to win like… 1/3 to 2/3 of my games, but was still very low level. When I went looking for how to become a better player, the number one answer was to study. Memorize openings, and counters to those openings. Read books about tactics, strategies, and what to do in the endgame. I learned that high level chess players can know how the game will end well in advance, and agree to just end it. Part of me was willing to do all of that. Even bought a couple recommended books, and started reading them. But eventually I realized that, for me, part of the fun was NOT knowing how the game would go. NOT knowing if I was walking into a trap, but having to try and determine it on the fly. I realized that if I played chess with the intention of just being better than everyone else, I would stop enjoying it, and it would turn into a hateful grind. And if I somehow achieved that goal, then chess could never be fun and surprising again. We don’t have to be the best at anything. We don’t have to win every encounter. If you want to, then more power to ya, but it’s not necessary for simple enjoyment.

You ever heard the saying, “funerals are for the living?” It’s similar to that in the sense that we have funerals in order for the living to get closure, not for the sake of the dead person, however most people still want a funeral for themselves after they’ve died despite the fact that they won’t be around to appreciate it. So even if we decided to only spread the names and faces of shooters after they’ve died, the next kid thinking about how much they hate their life and want to shoot up a school will take into account the fact that they will get fame/infamy, and the fact that it may only come after they’ve died isn’t much of a deterrent especially since they know that they’ve got a good chance of dying in the shooting regardless. However, if we decided as a culture to basically refuse to publicize the names and faces of the perpetrators (and somehow get all of the media to go along with that), so that the perps became, for all intents and purposes, publicly erased in perpetuity, that may help to remove one of the drivers. I’be also wondered how much the “interview every survivor and ask them to walk you through the experience” sort of stories that focus on the fear and despair experienced by people during the event may do more harm than good. Remember that these shooters effectively revel in the terror of their victims and by exploiting these survivors for ratings and focusing on the act itself for the titillation of the viewers likely encourages shooters as well. I’m not suggesting that we ignore the victims or the act itself, but there must be a way to present these stories in a way that gets across the devastation and focuses on preventing the next shooter, whereas current coverage that uses things like surveillance video from the locations, lots of shots of screaming and crying classmates, and descriptions that allow the viewer to almost love the experience themselves almost certainly have the wrong effect on the future mass-shooters-to-be. Regardless, I suspect it’s more like the idea that there’s no such thing as an anti-war movie (in the sense that even when dealing with movies that portray war in the most brutal and realistic ways possible and take pains to make it clear that war is bad, horrifying, senseless, etc., there is still a small portion of the audience that will see war as some romantic adventure). Similarly, I think that no matter how we cover these events, there will always be angry teenagers that revel in the media coverage because they see it as a fellow “loser” standing up for themselves against a world that is full of people that hate them and mock them and want to hurt them. And in this case, anything more interesting or emotional than a dry, monotone, emotionless voice reading off the facts of the incident over a blank screen is bound to give the next shooter-to-be some perverse pleasure knowing that their actions would have the same effect.

Obviously arcade is fun, it’s still War Thunder, but properly using your plane’s mechanics and beating a British seagull after a clever dogfight is a thrill that you don’t get as often in arcade. Honestly they’re almost like two different games, as the stakes are completely different. In arcade you go for the crazy maneuver because it’s really fun, and worst case scenario you die and pick a different plane. In realistic it’s like playing a game of chess. You might end up making a move that completely throws the whole match at the very beginning, or you could draw it out until your opponent finally makes a blunder. While you have infinite choices in your strategy, half of those choices will result in you being sent back to the hanger and waiting in another loading screen. @danshabash2 жыл бұрын
One thing that is mentioned but not really explained, that ACTUALLY makes WT better than World of Tanks, Armored Warfare, and other similar F2P P2W grinds: lack of balance. They put in realistic vehicles without caring for their performance. Which means that unlike WoT for example, where you will 70% of the time be dunked on by higher-tier vehicles that you can't even pen, in WT you can just play OP models that do just fine against higher tier and have a great time. Like, you can just play the German tier 1 tanks who get autocannons with 70mm pen while everyone else gets shitty single shot cannons that also pen less... its great fun. Or if you like planes, just main Spitfires or something, great performance on every metric and outclass many planes a tier higher. The extreme example of this is the following: Blowing up boats with plane rockets is hella fun. However, most plane rockets in the game are either peashooters, or only available to high-tier planes that get matched against destroyers and higher that are much too large and bristling with AA. So, if you like rocketing small boats, you have to pick the ONE plane out of hundreds the game offers that allows just this: the Pe-3(e), everything else is trash. But, as long as you know to pick it, you'll have great fun. Of course, if you're the kinda person that must play specific nation and get stuck playing say Japanese river boats (which were designed to only bully rock-armed Chinese peasants and entirely lack speed, firepower, and armor) then you're going to suffer... but that suffering will be entirely self-inflicted, as long as you know how to manipulate the battle rating system WT is by far the least torturous F2P game

While just about every tank is designed with sloped armor in the front, the T34 does have something that makes it special: The Russians tempered the steel to roughly double the usual hardness rating. This means the metal is incredibly stiff, so when a round hits the outside of the tank a layer of metal on the inside turns into shrapnel and frags the crew. 85% crew mortality rate go _brrrr._

@@hedgeearthridge6807 It hits everyone different. I spent 23 years unmedicated before I bit the bullet. It used to be I had emotional breakdowns constantly. Severe mood swings, ones I noticed but were uncontrollable. I'd break down into tears for no better reason than a friend was slightly abrasive to me at the worst points. I couldn't control myself after years and years of trying. Look into Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) My head was always so loud, so noisy, I could never relax, never got a moment to breathe. Eventually, I slipped into alcoholism. I didn't even realise until I was going through a liter of vodka every weekend. All I wanted is to be calm. I'm on methylphenidate now (ritalin) and have been for years. It feels like I can actually control myself. I'm still impulsive, it's still noisy, but it's so much more controllable. I've not lost myself, it's just that people can now understand me when I talk instead of my sentences losing the plot halfway through - assuming I didn't just forget to keep talking. It’s also worth noting that arcade and realistic modes use different physics models. When I was introducing a friend to WT a while back, we tried playing arcade tank battles, and he was extremely put off by how light everything felt. The tanks were accelerating fast, moving fast, and turning so quickly that he was drifting. *Drifting. In a tank.* We switched to realistic and he immediately felt much more comfortable.

Naval combat at release was separated into small boats and large boats, you'd start out with the small ones only and when you work your way about 3 or 4 ships up you could get a large boat. They then combined the two and gave everyone large boats to start, so smaller ships kind of became useless except for yolo torpedo boat runs

? Naval combat at release was small boats only, destroyers and cruisers only got added a year or two after the coastal boats if I remember right. Another year after that and the naval playerbase was so scattered they got consolidated into the same gamemode, whilst everyone was also given a reserve destroyer rather than having to grind up to it first. Again, if I remember that right.

To clarify bit on 14:35. There is actually an interesting theory on ADHD as a legacy behavior of our hunter-gather ancestors, where it would be more advantageous to quickly switch focus on multiple things when foraging plants and hunting game. When we became settled farmers such behaviors were disadvantageous (and thus a "illness"), as farming requires one to be focused on a single task with a longer memory for repetition.
@konstantinriumin26572 жыл бұрын
More like ADHD is a medical term for what is commonly known as lack of mental discipline
@0ld1eye2 жыл бұрын
And - like many theories - it's almost certainly bullshit pseudoscience contributing to the harmful romanticisation of a disorder and the ongoing crusade to rebrand it a 'superpower'. There's a lot of misinformation on ADHD. Hell, even the name of the disorder is misleading. It's characterised by dysfunctional working memory and executive function, NOT inattention or hyperactivity. So while I agree with Sseth's sentiment that we shouldn't judge someone's worth by their productivity and that we do so is a symptom of our fucked up late-stage capitalist society... it is still a disorder, no matter how you dress it up.
