I think I read or saw an interview where he said that. Completely frivolous and an expensive, glitchy, overcomplicated solution to a problem that was already solved with the minivans sliding door. I feel Tesla had a great desire to be seen as an SUV vs the minivan it really is (and probably a good branding decision). They are futuristic and a very distinctive feature--and kudos for making it actually kind of work. In looking at the Mercedes gullwing, it has a water channel to divert rain when the door lifts. I always wondered why the Tesla didnt go that route. (I wonder it when wet most often...)

The X is super comfortable and practical despite the unwelcome noises. I also have a Model 3 (Dual Motor). I like the tech, the speed and the size of the Model 3. The electric car miles vs real miles is not an electric car specific issue. It's simply that range is much more a factor with EVs so you are noticing it more. Any car will have a lot of range variance depending on how it is driven and the circumstances. Even gas powered ones.

Yeah, I always lose 3 gallons more after driving barely through 2 gallons of gas.
@arnthorsnaer4 жыл бұрын
Perverted Speed Are you being serious or a cynic?
@pervertedspeed1644 жыл бұрын
@@arnthorsnaer Serious, but in a jovial way. If I drive a gas car hard, sure the mileage goes down, but not by half or even more! And yes, I have studied physics. It takes a certain amount of energy to move a certain amount of weight, a certain distance. that's just the starting point though, I'm afraid.
@arnthorsnaer4 жыл бұрын
Perverted Speed The main problem is the capacity. One just doesn’t mind the variance in energy usage with gas powered cars because of the energy capacity. Batteries are getting there. Once 700-900 miles become the standard these variances won’t matter at all. My experience with my Nissan Leaf is that on average I can expect 70-80% in winter what I’m getting in summer (I live in Iceland). Capacity and charging times of course. But I didn’t mean to suggest an that the variance is the same in gas and electric powered cars. Just that variance is not a ev problem as such. It would be nice to see some actual comparisons on this.
@markray86294 жыл бұрын
Yeah remember in the winter, your battery range, or guess-o-meter, will be reduced because of the battery management system maintaining optimal battery operating temperature to help reduce any degradation in the future. Plus factor in if you are using the heater. Takes more energy to heat the cabin then it does to cool it.

BigMateo24 1. The mechanical wear is not a big deal and easily fixed. It’s a known issue that is only a vibration but the car still drives fine. Had it on my Model S for 3 years and only noticeable if stomping on the accelerator. Will get it fixed this year since this is the first time I am bringing my car in for service in 45k miles and 3 years. Not bad at all. 2. Body gaps...I suppose. But good lord, has anyone ever paid that close to them before Tesla? No. Go and look at other vehicles and they do exist. You’re lying if you say they don’t. And when driving a Tesla, the last thing on your mind is panel gaps. 3. Stated vs actual electric range. Yes it can be less in winter due to temp. No doubt. But notice he also said the way he’s driving. Try stomping on the accelerator full throttle in your gas car at every light and see how your gas mileage is. I never get my rated gas vehicle range.

On the range estimator. Some EV's are better than others. Our Bolt EV learns based on driving and usage and is generally very accurate. It's often very conservative even in the winter. Also it's not battery heating or driving behavior that eats most of the energy in the winter. It's cabin heat. It all depends on how warm and toasty you want to be. Also cooler air is more dense which does increase drag too.

It's strange that Tesla's mileage estimation doesn't adjust well enough for cold weather. The Chevrolet Volt's is almost dead accurate in any temperature (if maybe even a little conservative), and I've heard the Bolt's is pretty accurate too. I also really like GMs implementation of the minimum, average and maximum mileage estimates. It's the best way to do it, in my opinion.

The thing always glossed over by reviews is charging. You must MUST consider how you will keep an EV charged. From my research if you do not have a level 2 (220v) or better charging method available at home or at work you DO NOT want an EV. Talk all you want about using the supercharger network, that is not to be used as a primary charging method it is bad for the battery in the long term. Fanboys/girls love to wave charging off as an issue but I don't know of anyone willing to spend hours every few days at some level 2 charger. I mean hours as in 4+

You said it right: Tesla is a technology company (I would even say software company), not a car manufacturer. What they don't figured out yet is built quality and service. That's what established car manufacturers learned through the years, but they struggle with software - they still use "old-fashion" controllers for every single tsk, while Tesla uses only a few, who can work together. VW has currently a problem to set this mess up on their ID.3s. For my taste: I prefer a decent made car over a software device on wheels - I don't need all this stuff and I'm in my late 20's. For daily driving the current solutions are good enough.

They are a fad for rich boys and gals that can have two cars and want to say they are green with the times. However when you look at how all the internal parts are made it is not that green. You also have to factor in the energy that went into the construction of your previous car and what they do with it. Really they are like expensive hand bag for soccer moms. Also you said go on vacation with it Roman but it where? You just said the main reason not to get one. You really only have a general idea you can go give or take 30 or more miles and then what happens if you load it up with people plus stuff. That mileage will drop even further.
@JT-xq2hv4 жыл бұрын
By "green" are you talking about reducing green house gas emmissions? Because EVs certainly do this when compared to their ICE counterparts even when factoring in the manufacturing of the battery pack. I can provide sources. Its not even close. I picked up my Model 3 for the same price I bought my Golf R for a few years back. I'm hardly rich. You are not the gatekeeper of who is wealthy and its ridiculous to claim that anyone making more money than you is rich. There is an entire middle class that can afford cars in this price range.
@MrKayakinglife4 жыл бұрын
@@JT-xq2hv Ok, a Golf R start at 40,395 dollars with a quick google search and I would say "Yes, that is out of reach for some Americans". I don't think you were looking at a basic Golf R either. A quick google search again shows the average selling price of a car 34,000 then most Honda Accord and Toyota Camry sell for 30k. So yes that above the average price of a car. It makes more finical since to buy what you can afford and not be in debt for longer then you have to be. People that live in the city are so out of touch with the rest of the world that have to commute to work more then 75 miles and cant charge their car while at work. Also my truck can easily tow your car, fit more stuff, safer and just a better vehicle. Before you say it is not safer think about the physics at play. Having two objects colliding at the same speed, what happens? The if the two objects are of the same mass they cancel each other out and stop. Now make one object have more mass by about 10% say, what will happen? The object with greater mass will stop and push the smaller object out of its way.

Musk should hire the lot of them and buy the old Holden test track here and get them working on the quality issues and reducing the cost of making the cars, but at the same time engineering the car better. Tesla are brilliant at the battery tech and very innovative in design, but they are clearly playing catchup on how to mass produce cars well with consistent quality. The Holden guys would fix that weakness in the Tesla product range and put them at the top of the game for far less then anyone else could.
