I got this game for Christmas the year it came out and played a pretty good bit of it, and I remember having a small laundry list of issues with the game. My biggest problem with the game was the rock-paper-scissors combat. The worst thing about Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 was the Dragon Rush mechanic (locking some of the coolest moves in the game like Special Beam Cannon and Final Flash behind a bullshit coin toss system smh) and this game took that mechanic and based the whole entire game around it. Plenty of potential, squandered by such a terrible mechanic. I don't want to be one of those guys who is like "it doesn't pander to my tastes so therefore it is bad!" but I think that locking SO MUCH of the stuff that makes Dragon Ball Z cool in the first place behind a coin toss is the biggest fumble they could have possibly done. The combat was also very shallow like you mentioned, where every other game had a multitude of buttons and combos, but this one was literally just square/triangle. Also the fact that you didn't even get the full benefit of a lot of the blast moves because everything was a mini game where the opponent could mitigate a lot of it. In previous games you can just throw out a Kamehameha and it's whatever, it either lands or it doesn't and you either get that damage in or you don't, but in Ultimate Tenkaichi every single encounter with the opponent feels like a 1v1 Mario Party mini game. I get that defense is an integral part of a pseudo-fighting game, but its kind of crazy how you only get half as much mileage out of your resources and efforts because your opponent also gets a say in whatever you're trying to do, unlike old games where you either kick their ass or they kick yours, and with everything in between, almost like a dance. Ultimate Tenkaichi just felt like every encounter went on for SO long too because you got no mileage out of your efforts so every fight took twice as long as it should have. Wild how the worst part of a Dragon Ball game is the combat lmao. Graphically it was great even though some of the character models and textures look kind of rubbery, and the destructible arenas and backgrounds were a really cool touch, and the hero mode was also great, but the combat being so subpar is just an irreparable blemish on an otherwise decent game. Dragon Ball having a new game almost every year between the 90's and current day, they can't all be made equal and so there will always be games that are outright better, but failing to deliver on the most important aspect of a series based solely on buff dudes slugging it out just can't be ignored. The graphical jump and the create-a-character is the trade-off for having a way smaller roster than previous Tenkaichi games, as well as general hardware limitations I'm sure, but no matter how much cool stuff you have, you can't have bad combat in a Dragon Ball game and expect it to make waves. I do think that the ups help balance out the downs a fair bit, but again the middling combat can't be overlooked. What good is having a Lamborghini if the engine doesn't work? You know what I mean? Nice looking and cool car, but ultimately lackluster in the main area where it counts. Infinite World is the BEST Dragon Ball game and I will die on this hill. Didn't get its time in the sun because everyone moved onto Tenkaichi, but it fixed a lot of the bullshit that Budokai 3 had.

Make it to where you have different branching stories based on your character's race (finale on New Namek for Namekian players, finale in Supreme Kai world for Buu players, an OG Dragon Ball style world tournament ending for people who play regular human characters, etc etc)... Man that would be the coolest shit. And since it would be purely what-if based, they could just write any batshit they wanted, and I mean ANYTHING, and we'd be like ayo alright fuck it we ball. "I have to team up with Bulma, Dr. Gero, and Metal Cooler to hijack Frieza's space ship which has all the Dragon Balls on it, because it's Black Frieza and we have no hope of winning in a direct fight right now because he's too strong? Alright lets go."

I remember playing this game. I remember being excited for this game. I was amazed with the graphics, I was surprised to hear I get to create a character for the story. But then the gameplay happen. I was confused as to how this is supposed to be Ultimate Tenkaichi. How its supposed to be a continuation of the Budokai Tenkaichi series in general. I get what they thought of doing, but the execution is just not good. Whay went from a somewhat strick way of playing to having free movement on the battle field was awesome. But this, it was like going back to that strickness, but worse. Again the graphics are nice and welcoming. But the gameplay isn't. Instead of being like budokai 3 or well infinite world or like budokai tenkaichi 3 or even Burst Limit. Its more like Infinite World but with two modes that has a rock, paper, sissors mechanics. Now Budokai 3 did have that as well, but that was more towards getting hit with a rush attack where you guessed which button it may be so you can continue the attack or stop it. For this its like with almost everything. You shoot ki to go into a rock, paper, sissor fight. You go hand to hand into a rock, paper, scissor fight. The only time its not rock, paper, sissors is when a super attack is launched. Where you have 4 options. Do nothing, block, dodge, or counter. Should it be done by a meter to determine which one you want? No, but it was. Imo the game would have been far better off without that mechanic. But it works for a mobile game though. Also cant say much about the story. Couldn't beat Baby as a golden ape form, because the QTE was bs.

Sorry broski, I gotta join the hate train. This was one of of those games I took back to Gamestop within a week. The rock paper scissors thing killed it because that was how you did 80% of every battle and it became INSANELY repetitive. Everything else was great, but the director must've been smoking some dank shit the day he decided that shit was gonna be the CENTRAL mechanic of all the fights. 😂

As someone who used to play this game before my x box 360 got the red ring of death I never once got tired or bored of the game play nor thought I repetitive I hate when people say it's just rock paper scissors because it's not. The only problem I have with this game is I can't mash quick enough even on the easiest difficulty meaning you get stuck on baby in hero mode or vegeta in story mode if this was removed and replaced with any of the other qte's I genuinely think this could be one of my top 10 games ever. To address this rock paper scissors it isn't the triple strike/x/square button reduces the options the opponents can do in response to supers and makes it harder to mash evade out of a combo where as the stronger single strike/y/triangle button builds ki so you pick rock or paper you have to balance what is best at the time which requires strategy and mind games rather than he went for scissors last time so he'll do something different so paper shouldn't go wrong. They are not the same and those that say it is haven't played enough or read the tutorial. The combat works and it works well and if you don't like it it's not because it's bad it's because it's not for you. The animations are fantastic now and were exceptional for it's time the character combination was fantastic (once you unlocked more than 3 hairstyles but it was the first to allow any so progress) overall their are no major flaws once you see the combat this way besides the overuse of mashing so for this game to be considered one of the worst dragonaball games is just in my opinion people jumping on the bandwagon of "I didn't play this and people said it was bad so game must be bad" TLDR the game isn't bad you just haven't understood it enough plus if I can say this much about how the game can be played without talking about every small detail (team battle excluded world tournament excluded evading not mentioned) the game is not rock paper scissors.
