My great uncle was brought up in a workhouse school in Halifax ( Yorkshire ) after his mother had died, his father was in and out of jail and his 2 elder brothers had joined the army, but amazingly he ended up as a singer at Covent Garden with small ‘ named ‘ parts in the D’Oyly Carte and Carl Rosa opera companies ! @@michellelafaye2721 What I haven’t worked out was who paid for him to go to music school, presumably in Manchester . As he sang in the church choir, there could have been a massive ‘ whip round ‘ to pay his fees.No other sources of money available unless the 2 elder brothers ( one of them my grandad ) sent money from. their wages as soldiers !

@@christinescarff4920 He may have learned to sing from the Church. He wouldn't be the first singer to begin training the voices in the Church. There were quite a few during the 60 and 70 who honed their singing/musical skills with in the church.

@@michellelafaye2721 But my great uncle was born LONG before WW1 and actually at this time his 2 elder brothers ( including my grandad, the eldest of the 3 ) were working as builders in Halifax, and hadn’t joined the army yet. Strangely, my grandfather who was otherwise a truly Christian man always pretended to the family that his father too was dead .I suppose that deep down he was ashamed that his father was in and out of Wakefield jail just for owing tiny sums of money and then being unable to pay the fine for that too. The story in the family was that his father had remarried after his mother’s death ad that the step mother didn’t want the 3 boys, but I discovered from my research that his father infact NEVER remarried, and sadly died back in Halifax in one of those DREADFUL places where you paid something like a penny a night to sit on a bench to sleep , and my grandad NEVER once visited him ! My heart breaks when you think of the lives of these people and the dreadful conditions they suffered because of poverty and the Victorian workhouses !

Anyone making a life after being in the workhouse, especially a child, who was born in, and grew up without parent's, must have had strong faith and a strong will to succeed. Nothing has changed about how the poor are viewed though. You are still viewed as a criminal, drug addict, or just lazy. The homeless are treated so awful around the world, and many work, but can not afford housing because the rents have sky rocketed over the last few year's, and having to put such large deposits down is really a lot. I thank G-d that when i got hurt, and became disabled, i bought a place with the small amount of money i got from the lawsuit out in the country over ten year's ago. I had to fix stuff, but it was affordable back then, don't know how many people make it now. G-d bless everyone.

That is true. And some just chose to stay out of the business of paying bills indefinitely. I had a boss who told me the story of a young man who had no home... and slept in a car. (that was his home) He did this intentionally and saved his money every year to go on a GREAT vacation.

The truth is, the children who came to Australia suffered dreadful abuse. They were nothing more than slave labour. I doubt very much that Edith had any sort of joy from her childhood here.

Pretty much the same for those who came to Canada as Home Children. My maternal Grandfather was one. Seriously…you could composite several of these stories into an amazing screenplay. It’s ASTOUNDING that as many of them turned out as well as they did.

And here we are going back into bad times with families having to beg for help at foodbanks & having to manage living in one room for years while waiting for a place in social housing, while single people sleep on other peoples sofas or survive on the streets, waiting for an early death.

❤❤❤❤. Bravo for this documentary and what a beautiful yet heartbreaking tribute to those who did not give up in all of the monstrosities they faced trying to simply survive. In their time , maybe they felt that they were single drops of water with the storm,.... But little did they know that their stories have become the water that flows as a river called hope in the desert. Absolutely humbling . 🙏❤️

Separated families who tried to stay together; not helping people who ask for additional help - someone else making (tragic/terrible) choices for these children/[parents; hurts me soul to know these people suffered at the hands of others judgement! EDIT to add: Living in filth and vermin is bad for health, but keeping a house clean takes time, human energy, money, she was left with few options for her kids, and if you have an injury impairing your ability to move around, gosh these people needed more help than they were given! Separation isnt *always* the best solution imo.

My goodness, the 30 minute time area. I remember when Call the Midwife had an episode or 2 about a woman wo had worked in a workhouse and lost all of her children in the care area of the property. They found out that nearly all the children were documented as "failure to thrive", but you knew, they just let them die.

Contrary to popular belief, poverty itself wasn't considered shameful in Victorian times. The poverty that was frowned upon was that which led to homelessness and destitution. The uber stringent Victorian moral code included an ultra strong work ethic, so destitution was almost universally considered to be the result of laziness and lack of drive. The poor law authorities didn't give one thought about how one could become destitute and homeless through no fault of their own. While doubtlessly some deserved the harsh treatment of the workhouse system, others deserved more compassion. I definitely agree welfare queens should be put to work and have limited choices, but the Victorian workhouse system took it too far!
