When we (remainers) pointed out the absolute Stupidity of brexit, the brexiteers like that gentleman, got very angry. But, this vote should NEVER HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO THE UK POPULATION. I understood it's dangers because I've dealt with selling, exporting and dealing with our EU neighbours and how brilliant it was. The benefits were HUGE. But they focused on our membership fees, which were TINY compared to the benefits of free trade within the block by being a member. However the generally stupid public voted on other rubbish like a false immigration agenda. Brexit has damaged uk for decades. And its not over yet, worse to come I'm sorry to say.

But the reality was that the percentage of the UK's exports to the EU were declining. Maybe you did ok, but if you look at the overall numbers between 2002 and 2016 the percentage of UK exports going to the EU dropped from 55% to 45%. Now down to 41% with 59% going to non EU countries.. Just the USA alone receives 22% of the UK's exports, and that without a FTA. And 80% of those exports to the EU went to just 7 EU countries and 50% to just 3 EU countries. During that period of decline from 2002 to 2016, the EU grew its membership by 92% adding 13 new countries. It shows that the size of the EU membership makes very little difference to the UK. On the other hand trade with the other 160+ makes a big difference.

Liz, I live in the country, and I have at least four farmers and 10 farmworkers as very good friends. In years gone by, I used to help out on two of these farms. Remain was hampered by two things- an air of disbelief that the UK public would be so unbelievably stupid as to vote out in the first place, and second, there was an intentionally lobsided coverage of the remain side of the argument by the media. I don't trust that caller for two reasons: 1. A lot of experts have advised the farmers about the harsh consequences of leaving. 2. I distinctly remember seeing video footage of Boris Johnson stating that EU trading will remain the same after Brexit, and that Brexit Subsidies will match EU subsidies. The reality is that UK selected to leave the trade union and is now trading as a third country with WTO terms. Everyone with any trade knowledge would had understood it. I think there are several issues. Yes, we pay our politicians a lot of money to make the right decisions for the country and there probably shouldn't have been a referendum. However, we did have one and it was hardly an overwhelming majority in favour of leaving the EU. The areas that had the highest leave vote were mostly deprived areas that had most to lose from leaving the EU and thus no longer getting any EU subsidies, regeneration grants and the like. I can only speculate as to why that should be. As far as Liz Webster's assertion that farmers were not to blame, everywhere I went in the countryside during the referendum campaign I saw massive billboards in farmers' fields saying 'Vote Leave'. I'm rather surpised that farmers seem not to have done their research on what the impact of Brexit was going to be for them. I know the leave campaign tried to give the impression that everything would be much the same after Brexit, just that the UK would have more control over its borders and various other Brexit benefits that noone seems to talk about these days.

Well, as a farmer, what you should have done is to assess what you’ve got in terms of EU support and look at what you’ll get from Boris, Farage et al. And most of all: how solid their promises are. And I cannot for the life of me understand how so many British farmers, reputedly a very commonsensical group of people with a clear understanding of how many pennies there are to a pound, allowed themselves to be hoodwinked and led down the garden path by the likes of Boris, a known liar, and Farage, a bluster bag with no substance. They traded off a solid base of support, keeping their farms going, for empty promises from a bunch of spivs and chancers. Oh, and a would be squire straight from the 18th century. Ironic how the UK's wonderfully (un)democratic voting system enabled Brexit. Look at the 2005 - 2015 period and UKIP's inexorable rise in popularity, which is why Cameron had to offer defecting Tories a referendum. Analysis of the 2015 General Election result reveals that the ballots of less than 2000 (switching from UKIP back to Tory) voters across 7 key marginal constituencies gave Cameron his narrow 12 seat Commons majority, after which he had to make good his pledge to hold the IN/OUT referendum - the rest, as we know to our cost........is history!
