2018 was the turning point for dubstep where heavier styles started to take over and dethrone brostep as the leading subgenre for like half a decade at that point, this ep is one of the most important in dubstep of the 2010s for that exact reason. behemoth dropping was a symbol that the grimey riddim inspired sound could dominate the mainstream dubstep airwaves from there onward

7:15 just for those who don't know, the character in the Rise video is Ubik. He's a demon from Berserk. Svdden Death is a big fan of Berserk, so that's why a lot of the visuals in the first Voyd EP have Berserk visuals

The entire VOYD project is heavily inspired by Berserk, the popular manga/anime

Best manga ever. Love that Danny took inspiration from this masterpiece

Break It Down literally has the Berserk orb thing as the visual (idk what it's actually called xd) That was really what helped me realize the inspiration

Needless to say I think VOYD was a turnaround for the heavier riddim and dubstep side of things. It just got more detailed and a lot of niche acts popped up - especially with the live presence of the act.

Wasn't voyd where Svdden Death started to heavily grow in popularity? Glad he got all the recognition he deserved

i think the lil guy from the Rise visual is the Berserk character Conrad from the God Hand. Also, weirdly enough my fav when it came out was Gates of Hell, and I probably enjoyed it the least now but the one I enjoyed most now was def the Samplifire collab.

Seeing what you said about expecting it to be pure dark evil stuff it actually sorta makes sense now that I think about it. Voyd 1 and 1.5 are a little unfocused feeling but by vol. 2 he really was able to hone in on the evil sound of Voyd.

You have a good point tbh, there is definitely a lot of unappreciated value in those older tracks. It's also quite refreshing to hear these older releases again, since many of the trends we have in bass music today weren't established at the time. Speaking of establishing trends, I would love to see you check out Space Laces' Vaultage Mixes in this new format

Castles is definitely my fav out of the bunch, even one of my favs from Danny. Like the weird vocal chops and the double time/super slow drop just adds up to a song that feels like it should exist.

i still remember where i was when i heard voyd's DARKNESS clip for the first time and i loved the minimalism of it more than anything else, it was so condensed and honed it just felt like this fuckin razor blade of a track and when voyd vol.1 came out obviously rise and behemoth were in that style but i remember being a bit disappointed that the other three tracks felt like more aggressive svdden death songs. voyd 1.5 went more in the direction i liked lol
@Disvoidal23 сағат бұрын
thanks for doing this though i'd watch the hell out of you going back and listening/relistening to older stuff bc as you said it's important to go back and give stuff like this attention and remember why it's as monumental as it is and also for my own selfish reasons of seeing you react to more stuff i've listened to haha

Tbh I'm really NOT a fan of SVDDEN DEATHs snares. They sound so incredible weak imho. Completely destroying the impact of the drop. They aren't even clunky like Convexity's or Chime's micro-snares. The SVDDEN DEATH-snare is just... weak. You know what I mean?
