Putting the physicality to one side, City are also much better tactically, far more complete in the offensive and defensive phases, much better in transition. Partly down to a progression of tactical rigour in the game, but mostly down to Pep’s genius.

“Man City depth” City had 22 players. Out of that, 3 of them are goalkeepers. Remaining 19. Then you have Rico Lewis, and Cole Palmer. Remaining 17. Then you have the injury issues of Kalvin Phillips and the limited game time of Sergio Gomez. So all in all, 15 outfield players remain. 10 start, with 5 on the bench. The city Depth is a myth. If anything, the team is good at creating multiple positions for each player. We’ve recently seen Stones in MD and Silva at LB. Give credit where it’s due and stop making excuses

Obviously debates like this are what makes the football community so fun but it’s kind of impossible to really come to an answer. The football played back then was very different to what it is now. So if they played each other city would probably win but probably more down to the modern tactics than each player being better than the other. I think it’s true city did win the treble more comprehensively but with advancements in recovery and sports science it was probably harder back in the 90s to keep that many players fit in a more physical game which probably led to the league not being a runaway win for united. Also let’s be honest man city had a fortunate bracket as far as who they played in the final although their QF and SF matchups were tough (in UCL) Overall I’d honestly say United’s is more impressive considering the amount of academy players they had in that side. That being said what expressions says is true people forget united also had more spending power than all the other clubs back then! The price tags may not have been as big but relative to the rest of the league they did have an advantage on being able to recruit really whoever they wanted.

You realise the game keeps developing with innovations in not just tactics and game philosophies but also off the pitch technologies for players to train better and take care of their body. In 20 years time, this City team would lose to any decent top 4 side. 90s teams would’ve destroyed teams from the 60s. Pep’s Barca won’t be as dominant now. Everyone knows how to play ball possession or know how to counter it. They’d probably lose to a lot of these teams. That’s just how it works. But at their time, is City as iconic and special as Pep’s Barca or the 99 treble? No. You realise the list of legends United went through to get to their trophy right. We’re talking about Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario, Rivaldo, Oliver Kahn, Lothar Matthaus, Inzaghi, Conte, Deschamps, Baggio, Edgar Davids etc. Even Pep Guardiola was at Barca at the time when Utd were in the same group. And they did it with almost half of the team made up of academy kids. There’s no one way to know for sure who would beat who and people will keep debating. But City will never be able to say “We’re the first English side ever to win the Treble”. That’s something only United can say.

They beat their best competition in England 3-1 away and 4-1 at home, beat Utd 6-3, beat Liverpool 4-1, smashed Bayern 4-1 and smashed Madrid 5-1, yes they beat the champions of Europe in their competition 5-1. They won 13 games on the bounce in the league to make sure they capitalised when Arsenal dropped off. Yes arsenal bottled it but if City didn’t win 13 in a row they wouldn’t have won it.

A noble mindset of winning but it’s not as convincing as winning 13 league games on the bounce to secure the league, by a significantly greater margin than Utd did, not conceding a goal in the FA Cup until the final (that was soft as fuck anyway) and winning the knockout Champions League ties: 8-1, 4-1, 5-1 and 1-0 City were infinitely more convincing than Utd’s Treble. They won more games, scored more goals, conceded fewer goals and cruised to finals against the best opposition they could face.

City are a top team but they had it way easier, Arsenal were 2nd in the league both times but Arsenal were one of the best teams in Europe in 99. They weren't even in the champions league this year. City beat us in the final, we've made good progress under Ten Hag but at that time Newcastle were around the same level as we are now. We overcame a top level Arsenal team not to mention Liverpool and Chelsea etc. Europe is comfortably the worst it has ever been. Real are rebuilding but way past thier best, Bayern could barely win the title for the first time in a decade and Barca weren't even in CL but still managed to walk the title over Real. Unfortunately City are a great team and you can't ever knock a treble but the level of competition is pretty poor this season. Also they shouldn't have even been in any the competitions due to thier constant cheating but that's another story.

United played: Barca x2, Bayern x3, Inter and Juve in their prime with the worlds best players. They best Arsenal on the way to the final of FA Cup and won the Premiership after Arsenal had done the double the season before. There is comparison of who would win, impossible to say but it’s clear who had a much more challenging treble. It’s pathetic to say “United were spending more than everyone” after Arsenal had just done the double. It goes to show how much parity there was in the league and how much these two brothers have short memories.

City had an easier run. Their only real competition was Real Madrid. No other team in Europe stands a chance. United in the FA Cup had Chelsea, Liverpool and one of Arsenals best teams ever. Champions league they had Barcelona, inter, Bayern and Prime Juventus. The only argument City fans can make is that United had a worse league performance but remember it was more competitive then than it is now. City went on a 14 win streak, and you’re trying to tell me they had a harder run? Liverpool and Chelsea had an off season, United in the middle of a rebuild, Arsenal lacked squad depth to keep the title race running(also couldn’t beat Man City), and Tottenham are Tottenham. There was no real competition for City this season, they had an easier run than United. Which is why United’s is more impressive
