However Nintendo had decided to shake things up a bit when the ninth mainline entry came out, completely changing up the gameplay that most fans had come to love from the series. Nowadays Mario Party 9 is seen in a negative light, with many pointing it out as the beginning of the downfall for the series as well as one of the worst Mario Party games ever made. I’m gonna be honest, the single best part of the game for me is its music. It easily has my favourite ost in the series, and it heightens the overall presentation so much. It’s the thing I remember the most fondly from the whole game, with it being the first Mario Party I ever played actually.

Mario Party 9 is the first ever mario game that made me discover this franchise, i used to watch no comentary playthroughs of this at my school's library computer. Not the best introduction, but not the worse either. This game is definitely better, for when you and the boys, don't feel like ruining eachothers days, some aspects of the game could of just been polished out better.

The funny thing about people complaining it's not like traditional Mario Party is that that isn't a problem if this was your first MP like mine. Was surprised how unpopular this game was considering all the marketing and ads around it at the time 29:00 That logic honestly applies to a lot of old games a lot of us grew up with, a lot of them aren't perfect and have rough edges, but a lot of people still worship them; A lot of their logic boils down to "my childhood was the golden age for gaming". Spent hours playing choice challenge with my siblings when we were younger. The anticipation of who secretly chose what game to play made it so fun. On very rare occasions the game would even mess with you and pull up a player for game they didn’t pick only for toad to announce they had made a mistake and send that player back down.

The downfall of the series? Bruh, had they even played 7 and 8 when they were the most recent entries at the time? No Chance Time, long and annoying animations, no longer dueling when landing on the same spaces during the last 5 turns, stupid ways to set duel wages, etc. 9 was frankly a breath of fresh air for me. Don't get me wrong, I love that the series is going back to its roots, but I'll be damned if I ever choose to play 7 (maybe) or 8 over 9.

My favorite boss minigame has always been bloopers, simply because it's the only one that functions as a boss and minigame. It can be attacked, it can attack you, and is actively trying to dodge your attacks. If all bosses were like bloopers I wouldn't have such a problem with boss battles in MP9 and MP10.

MP9 holds a special place in my heart. It’s not perfect, but it’s one game that I truly think now it’s too overhated by many. It tries to be something new, and to give its credit, it does it decently. The board are kinda mid, but the minigames slaps, the OSTs goes unironically chard af, and the visuals are gorgeous. For the Bowser Jr boss fight, it's actually not random as the dice spins and rolls in a consistent way. As a kid I hated this fight for being luck until I found out there's a 100% consistent method to roll any number you needed by looking at the dice as it's spinning. Never lost that minigame ever again after I labed all the numbers (to beat the master AI lol).

Unpopular Opinion: I prefer this game over Mario Party 1, still weaker than every other classic Mario Party game. That aside, man, was 2012 such a weird year for Mario games, we got this, a Mario Tennis on 3DS, 2 New Super Mario Bros. games and that one Paper Mario game everyone hates... Ooooo, this is a nice video! Nice to see someone else talk about this game. And yes, I'm aware I'm 11 months late to seeing this video, but I still wanted to make a comment anyways. I grew up with Mario Party 8 and Mario Party 9, and I've absolutely adored both of these games. They're definitely very different games, but both were a lot of fun for me, and still are today. And both have elements that I return to them for. I don't think Mario Party 9 was exactly bad, it was just different, and I appreciate it for that. Its a fun game still, even if it has some flaws. It does some things I enjoy more than 8, and 8 does some things I enjoy more than in 9. Both are perfectly great games, and I love them both. The game does lean more towards luck, but personally it isn't an issue most of the time for me. Usually skill still matters alongside the luck from my experience, and even during the times where luck reigns supreme, Mario Party is a series where I personally just prepare myself to possibly get screwed over by random chance from time to time, and to just have fun and embrace the chaos. There are some things I don't care for in that way. Bob-omb Factory's unavoidable Bob-omb at the end is stupid in my opinion, the Whomp mid-boss is just plain bad and the fight with King Bob-omb does everything it does but way better with at least a bit more strategy, and Bowser Jr.'s mid-boss is just a luck minigame that can sometimes be satisfying if you're lucky but otherwise just lasts way too long and can't even match up to any luck minigame in Mario Party 8 or 9. I will say that I think the Bowser boss fight is actually pretty cool. In a way, it feels like it represents what Mario Party is very well. It primarily uses the dice blocks that most (maybe even every idk since there is a lot I've yet to play) games in the series have as your main weapon of attack. It has some luck based elements with trying to toss the dice around and hoping they land on what you want or need. But there is still strategy to this. You can just toss any dice that isn't already showing one of yours, sure. You can prioritize Bowser dice to prevent his fireball attacks if you don't think you can dodge a bunch of them. You can prioritize other player dice to just reduce their score and ignore Bowser dice if you got the skill to dodge his fireballs and think that the other players may not be able to dodge them all. You can prioritize a specific player's dice, like a player who's about to win the whole game that you need to lose to stand a chance, or just whoever's currently in the lead during the boss. It is still decently luck based, but you can strategize around and find a way around it to still get victory. This, combined with it being a boss battle that lasts more than a minute (in a good way, unlike the mid-boss before it) and the call-backs with Bowser summoning other bosses for attacks at the half way point, made this one of my favorite boss fights in the game. I also personally sometimes really liked parts of the whole car gimmick. It was an interesting switch-up that gave a unique shift in gameplay. And, it does something I really liked; not having to always go through a minigame before you can reach your turn again. As fun as minigames can be, sometimes I like just being able to traverse through the main board; The board and its events are one of the most fun aspects of Mario Party for me. So in other Mario Party games like 8, it sometimes gets annoying to play through the main Party mode because you get constantly stopped every turn by a minigame. And while Duel mode is a favorite of mine from 8 that helps with this, sometimes I prefer the normal map objectives, and the fact that you can only have two players in Duel mode sometimes can be annoying. Meanwhile in Mario Party 9, you can have decently long stretches of time where you can just go around the main map and its objectives, and you can sometimes take many turns before a minigame ends up popping up. Overall, Mario Party 9 is still a great game just like most of the other games in this series, and I'm very thankful that it exists. Im almost a year late, but i will give off my time with this game TLDR: Mario Party 9 is my favorite mario party game, fight me. Mario Party 9 was my first ever mario party game as a child, hell i didnt even know the others existed (because kid brain) and i had **lots** of fun with it even when i played alone (which was all the time). I even played it again a few months ago and still had fun with it, even if i got worser at the minigames. Just playing it again after so many years made me feel like a kid again and the nostalgia i got from playing this game was also pretty positive. I really didnt had a problem with anything besides the party points but even then, i like collecting things/100%-ing games so i will push that small negative thing aside. I liked all the boards, the small story and the extra minigame modes you can do (mostly the garden one), so i like it a lot. Maybe i will introduce it to my nephews if they are older so they can have the same experience as me when they get older.

Thanks for the content!! So, the first Mario Party game I ever played was Mario Party 10....and, I have to say, I LOVED it! It was so much fun to play with the wife and kids! Then I found MP9 and I loved it too! I had no idea that many people hated these games. I understand why people were disappointed, but I can't help but love these games! The way I see Mario Party 9 and 10 is as a "different take" on the MP series. And now that I've played the N64, GC, Wii, DS, 3DS, and Nintendo Switch MP games I have to say, I have never not had a ton of fun with any MP game. I think MP9 and 10 are loads of fun! First, the mini games are solid! Motion control only makes them wakier! Second, the mini bosses are so much fun!! Third, while the boards are linear, they also have some strategy. You can really screw each other over or get ahead if you happen to have the right dice. If you ask me, these games are solid and a great time with friends and family! They may not be the best in the series, but they still have a special place in my heart and I always have too much fun playing them! One thing I've noticed about some (not all) gamers who review games on KZbin is that they praise very mediocre games that leave me scratching my head, and then jump on the hate bandwagon. Don't get me wrong I love every MP game in the series. If Nintendo released a Mega MP1-8 remastered collection I would be the first to be willing to pay $500 for it! MP9 is a decent game that honestly if it were to be remade, I'd love to see a mode that turns all 7 of the boards into classic style boards. MP10 - Bowser Party is fun to play with friends. MP Island Tour and MP Star Rush are great games. Super Mario Party is fun but the character dice ruins it mostly for me.

The only reason that I despise it was getting stuck in a backwards space, and a bowser space 6 spaces away with AI and we all rolled a 6 at LEAST 250 TIMES IN A ROW, the bowser minigames had 200 mini star pools (I wish I was joking... I lost 2 1/2 hours of my life to this.)

i have to say, the mental gymnastics with the bob-omb factory bosses are so funny with the right people i personally love the idea of the thwomp boss because of that, though i have to admit the points you get are kinda unbalanced (and it's unfair how whoever is at the right gets to have a bonus hit)

My buddy Seth and I played this a lot when it came out and we had a good time with it despite its flaws. I played through each board a few years ago and it was honestly not a horrible experience. By no means is it my first pick, not even close, but if someone asked to play MP9, I'd rock a board or two (10 on the other hand is a mess that we don't talk about)

I unironically find MP9 to be more skill based. The mini games directly give you mini stars to help you win, and the vast majority of them are skill based imo. I tend to be better at mini games than my friends, and I have a way higher win ratio in MP9 due to this

No, it wasn't that bad. I'll admit it was too luck based and all, but it was still pretty fun, had lots of great minigames, and PHENOMENAL soundtrack. Also the restoring the night sky with the constellations was really nice, and the relaxing music track that accompanies that has a very special place in my heart.

i think if they gave the players more items to mess with the boards the car mechanic would be more well received. something like traps and having minigames with item choices as the reward would give incentive to skilled players. possibly longer boards too. imagine this: you're at the tail end of a long game, and its anyone's game. There's a massive 10 mini ztar pickup just a couple spaces ahead, and look, a minigame! winner gets to choose from a couple dice blocks and it basically ensures they can avoid the ztar pickup. the level of competition that minigame will instill...im getting goosebumps just thinking about it. or imagine an item that allows the player to skip their turn, or reshuffle the order on demand. I think adding coins for people to shop with would be cool, but I like the idea of using the mini stars. do you give up more of your win condition for a good item? or do you hold onto that lead and let fate decide? the car mechanic wasn't doomed from the start, they just simplified the hell out of the mario party format by taking away traps and most other interactions with players outside of the minigames.

I honestly really enjoyed Mario Party 9 and 10. And in defense of the DK board, I always took it as just a short board to play if you wanted a quick game. Similar to Solo Mode in MP6

After growing up with the first three games. Seeing nine and ten, I was upset too. The first three games will always have a special place in my heart. But this one is just bad. Mario party 1, had special die blocks. You had to buy them in the shop, activate them, then they would appear at random on the boards.

The only problem that 9 and 10 have is the board system. It's not based on the amount of turns. I do like that they tried something different and I enjoyed 9 and 10, but Mario party should remain Turn based

The devs said that they wanted to make the game more engaging, that people were bored waiting for their turn. And that's why they made the stupid car. I played this game with my girlfriend, my son, my brothers, my friends, everyone. We always went back to Mario party 8, as it lacked a atupid car, you see

To me, my thoughts abou this game is simmilar to my opinion on Mario Party 4, but more extreme. Everything except the actual boards is good, but the boards are trash. I don't like the car mechanic, not just because it's diffrent, but because it removes strategy and agency from the players, and turns the game into "roll the dice and hope you win". And even then, if the item system was better, the car didn't completely replaced the traditional style, or the boards didn't repeat mechanics so much (4 out of the 7 boards have a mechanic where there is a looming threat the makes you lose half of your ministars), or if the mechanics had more room to breathe and build up, than MP9 would be great. But none of those things happened, so we end up with a Mario Party game where the main mode makes players just sit there, roll dice, and beg for the game to end after the mid-boss.

MP9 was my first MP, mainly because I grew up during the Wii era and only had access to a few games as a kid. I couldn’t play the older titles, but enjoyed 9 a lot, especially with my siblings. After I told my bf he was like “omg that’s the worst MP lmao,” and I’ve since played the older games with him and his friends, but you know what? It’s different but it’s still just MP, they’re all kinda the same. Who cares if 9 is kinda mid, it’s a fun time regardless. Now he’s all like “well I guess it isn’t that bad, maybe we can play it sometime” ever since people have been giving it a second chance. Smh who tf cares if it’s “bad,” just play whatever makes you happy.
