It has nothing to do with what she should want, it's to replace the loss of income in the household after the breadwinner of the marriage is gone. The spouse is not receiving the money because they "deserve" it, they're getting it in order to maintain a semblance of the lifestyle provided before the end of the marriage, until the person can get on their feet independently, since they most likely weren't gainfully employed. Same with child support, except that lasts for as long as the child is still a minor, regardless of if the person gets a job (they just adjust the monthly payment, but rarely stop it altogether).
