This isn't a combat anime, fights are just a plot device to make the story go forward. I never cared for a second that they "spiked". In this case this fight exists only to teach Rudy a lesson, show Rujired's moral standing and to establish Eris's progression and to create the foundation of what she becomes in the future. Graham used his Jujutsu Kaisen brain to judge this episode....

Dude said "I don't care about the story and I care about the progression of the power system because video games." That's a terrible way to engage with any story.

5:40 The guild had three quests in that forest: investigate weird eggs, investigate odd monster sightings, exterminate dangerous monster. Only at the site did they figure out all three were about the same thing, so the investigations were a lot more dangerous than the guild originally thought. I don't get the thing with expecting Rudeus' party having to climb up the power scaling. Rudeus is a Saint-tier Water magician, so that's pretty damn high to begin with. He in fact had to scale WAAAY back on his attack power so he'd give Eris a purpose as a melee fighter and he largely held Ruijerd, himself a 570-year old commando, in reserve. Eris was close to Advanced in Sword God style back in Roa, and Advanced is when a fighter starts becoming superhuman in their abilities. 31:10 The Adventurers' Guild is a global organization with continental divisions. If Rudeus' crew gets busted in the Rikarisu guild, they're busted on the entire Demon Continent. That'd kneecap their ability to make money. 36:00 Detoxification is separate from Healing, so a poison affecting her that he can't heal would've been possible. As far as power scaling is concerned, Paul and Ghislaine struggled a lot more against a Red Hood Cobra as a dungeon boss.

Last video I was wondering why you dropped the show after this episode and I never would have guessed it was over power level spikes, turning points, and Ruijerd joining the team. Let’s see your stance on each of those when season 1 finishes. Also since you’re talking about how invested you are in Rudy’s character growth, you’ll be glad to know that’s exactly what this anime is all about.

There was an after-credit scene in this episode since it was the last one for this part 1 of the anime but it's not important to the plot so I guess not much is lost. Part 2 has 12 episodes and an OVA (chronologically between ep16 and 17 but should only be watched after ep17 or after 24 to not break the flow of the series). The three groups were in the forest on 3 separate quests. The Pig Guy's group was there to kill a strong monster that appeared. The Toughs were there to collect the eggs of a strong monster that appeared. And Dead End was there to investigate rumours of a strong monster in the area. Since Dead End's quest could still be fulfilled even if the monster was dead they decided to tail the Toughs to protect them. Also, Rudy's Stone Cannons are so precisely controlled that he turns them into hollowpoint rounds with fire filling the centre effectively firing telephone pole-sized missiles at enemies. He also adds rifling and spin to them meaning they are absurdly OP. I think Ruijerd not headpating Kurt is because headpats, in Ruijerd's mind at least, are for children. In this moment Ruijerd has just been corrected on Kurt's group being warriors so to give him headpats would be going back on that. It's the same thing he does with Rudy at the end of the episode, clasping him on the shoulder, when up to this point he's given Rudy headpats. An observation of the party dynamic here: Rujierd is a scout/tank/DPS, Eris is just DPS and Rudy is DPS/healer/Crowd Control/The face/administrator/strategist (basically everything outside of combat is handled by Rudy). We don't see as much of it in the anime but every decision Rudy has made so far has been beneficial for the party and has kept them afloat so he has become the de facto leader. This is why Rujierd looks to Rudy when deciding anything and Eris... well she basically thinks "whatever Rudy decides has to be basically the right choice almost by definition". The thing is, no matter how competent Rudy is (and he IS very competent), he has taken too many responsibilities upon himself and ends up making a VERY wrong choice. He's been trying to balance Rujierd's rigid morality with what he thinks is the most efficient way to go about things. Although the balance breaks in this episode they do come to a very nice resolution: "Hey, why don't we actually trust each other and talk about what we are doing moving forward from time to time?". Now, some cut content: 1. This one is pretty minor but Rudy does join the fight when trying to save the "kid" party after a moment of hesitation. I actually think the way they did it in the anime is more powerful. 2. It really does seem like a huge leap in logic for Rudy to decide he might as well just erase the city after he is threatened by Nokopara (horse guy) (I mean, it still is, but that's beside the point). The thing is, Nokopara says he has an accomplice who knows about the whole "switching jobs" thing and will report them if something happens to him. A very cold calculation goes through Rudy's mind at this point: I can't just blame the whole thing on the other party, I can't stay and pay off Nokopara since we would never leave and accomplish our objective, I have no way of knowing who Nokopara's accomplice is or even if they exist... well, I guess I'll have to flood the entire city and kill everyone in it (this would work, the city is in a crater). Up until this point, Rudy has a single objective in his mind: keep Eris safe and take her home, nothing else matters, no one else matters. What I find really scary about Rudy is that, while he's far from being the most powerful in a straight fight (still pretty good though), he's basically a walking WMD. Just like a level 17+ wizard that can just rage quit and cast "Meteor Swarm" on the city they're in, putting Rudy in a situation where he thinks he has nothing to lose could have devastating effects. 3. An Eris interaction was left out of the anime: when she wished Kurt, good luck in making it back to Rikaris, he kissed her hand, on the knuckle of her glove. She was shocked and made a display to Rudeus and Ruijerd to throw away the glove in panic, then presented her hand to Rudeus and demanded he kiss it. He licks it instead and gets punched for it. I was so scared of what Graham will gonna say but it all comes down to the anime not explaining everything and lore in intricate details. I also have problems with it in some aspects but I also understand that they have to cut all the boring details and focus on the story and if someone wants to know everything they can just read the light novel. One thing I have to say is that the magic system in Mushoku Tensei is done very well and logically which makes sense in the world in comparison to other shows and if you pay attention and remember everything they have told (which is not easy to do), you can make sense of everything.

The red cobra fight is slightly different in the LN. It's bascially just Ruijerd drawing "Aggro" until the cobra gets tired and slows down so Rudeus can hit it. WIth how strong Rudeus and Eris are, you must remember their teachers are both "King" level. Eris already got the same rank as Paul in one of the sword fighting styles when training with Ghislaine. So as a comparison, Paul is an S-rank adventurer while the cobra is only an A-rank monster. (though adventurer rank doesn't really translate to power-level) Also, this isn't a battle shonen/power fantasy, but the "power system" is more in depth in the LN. See ya back late January 🥲

Boy, Graham I think you'd adore the third novel. Much of Eris, Rudy, and Ruijerd getting used to working together explores their capabilities in the novels, but is only implied in the show. It's not a vital thing to the overall plot, but Rudeus develops a habit in this arc where he modulates his magic to avoid killing blows if at all possible.

So about the progression of Rudy's magic. He came to standstill after Roxy left. He even said himself that he wasn't getting anywhere with his magic. That's what prompted him to want to go to the magic school with slyphy. Also eris trained with ghislaine for years and is I believe at intermediate rank. For reference Paul was at advanced (in all three styles). At this point Rudy is a saint lvl mage (same as Roxy but she has ranked up to water king) but his flaw is that he is shit at physical combat, so a glass cannon. Also if he uses all his mana he falls asleep, but he does have a shit ton of mana(you can make a spell more powerful with more mana). Ghislaine is a sword king (the third highest rank) for reference. If rujird wasn't there they would have died in the demon continent, simple as that.eris was able to deal with the wolves bc she spent YEARS training (also rujird keeping watch). Rujird gives them the moral issues to deal with. Like how he sees things in black and white a lot. How everyone fears his kind. Him revealing his identity in that town completely destroyed the goodwill they had built up.

I just wish they would have shown more of a power progression of the characters. It feels weird having characters be considered near the top of the power tiers in the world when the show has only just begun.

@@TheAnimeClub159 much of the "blame" is on the pacing of the show, which is normal because you cant adapt the entirety of the base material. MT is NOT going to be about fights or power scaling, although you would be suprised how high the power ceiling is. much of the tension that will come in the next part is about Ruijerd's moral standing basically going against everybody (and also Paul). i know turning points could feel like it comes out of nowhere, but everything will be explained reasonably in time. MT is def one of those shows that you need to patient about.

10:00 something left out from the LN is that Rudeus usually scales back the power on his spells because the first time he used his Stone Cannon on a monster, it blew it apart and scattered its parts that they needed all around which created more work having to gather them and also annoyed Eris since she couldn't get any practice if the monster was already dead. He can pump as much mana as he wants into that Stone Cannon spell to the point where there's nothing it can't penetrate, but he still has to land it. Think of him as a glass cannon that can one shot anything, but will get bodied very quickly against something or someone that's in melee range since he's barely average when it comes to armed combat. That being said, MT isn't an action anime, it's a drama anime with some action.

Lol, I thought you were bothered by the moral dilemma of Rudy’s scheming causing the death of someone who could have been saved. But I see you thought there were some deus ex machina moments. I too, was a little surprised that Eris was able to chop the red cobra the second time too, but I was able to reason that it was due to her adjusting her power strike and finding the sweet spot on the cobra. I don’t feel there was a sudden jump in power, as far as Eris goes. Back in Roa, Ghislaine told her that she was at a certain level (I forgot exactly), but it seemed like it meant she was super skilled. Now, in the demon continent, she’s traveling alongside Rujierd, and you can assume she’s training or learning from him too. I myself never thought this show was unrealistic … it’s way more realistic than most other shows, and that’s the appeal of Mushoku Tensei. It’s gritty, dirty, ugly in showing how people really feel or are like, and how bad things can happen in the world. It also has the sweet, cute, and rewarding moments. Rudy is not the most likable protagonist, but he is an interesting one, and I like seeing the growth, albeit it is slow… but that again is realistic. I think as you watch the rest of the episodes, your fears will reside.

Ranks: Beginner > Intermediate > Advanced > Saint > King > Emperor > God. Rudy is a Water Saint (everything else Advanced or Intermediate) Roxy and Ghislane are Kings Ruijerd is around Emperor I think currently Eris is around Saint but i could be wrong about that. Paul is Advanced in 3 sword styles, not just one.
@sankroАй бұрын
Eris is a fairly "low level" advanced swordsman currently. While Roxy and Ghislaine are the same rank, Magic rank =/= Sword rank in terms of actual power in a fight, especially in single combat.

@TheAnimeClub159 Im sorry man but you're literally hyping up Solo Leveling in a video today where the entire premise is literally the embodiment of power fantasy. Kind of a hollow criticism to say MT is a power fantasy because the snake in a non-fight centered anime died too easy. Maybe just my opinion
@TheAnimeClub15921 күн бұрын
@@subaquatictoaster If you think Solo Leveling has been purely power fantasy, then I think you should look more at the subtext of the show.

@@TheAnimeClub159 Not to keep drawing this out, but if you think MT is a power fantasy (oh boy are you mistaken on that point) lacking in subtext, you've kind of missed the entire point of the story even after 11 episodes. That's the point I'm making. Frankly it was a disappointing take and made it sound like nothing mattered outside of "Story bad, snake not die hard enough" which is just depressing to hear when you're approaching a purely character driven story. Then to call it a boring power fantasy? Idk man. Rings hollow when Jinwoo kills an elf real cool so that's got enough "subtext" but a whole episode centered around Rudy realizing he just directly caused a death and that this isn't a video game world without stakes isn't enough subtext to justify the snake.

not wanting to engage in the story and carying more about the power system first is just putting your own expectations on a show that isn't designed for that. If you just want to watch fights stick to the generic shonen action stuff
