Personally i marathoned 1-7 with an ex of mine abt 10yrs ago. Cant say i remembered much abt the series and i definitely didnt keep up with it. I had never even heard of jigsaw and spiral til after i watched saw x. I dont go to the movies/tv much, and i have lots of ad blockers, so when my partner asked me out on a halloween movie date and asked what was playing that id be interested in watching, i just picked saw because it sounded familiar. Went in basically blind, other than vague recollections of key moments from the early movies, thats it. And for that reason, i feel like i went in with the best circumstances possible. The opening didnt drag for me, i really enjoyed all the time we got to spend with jigsaw the person. Helped build character, motivation and empathy. But on the other hand, because the first half of the movie was so normal, to be honest, by the time he discovered hed been conned, id forgotten i was watching a horror movie, if that makes sense. Id kinda gotten into the mindset of it being a poorly-written drama? So when he starts kidnapping people, it was so jarring to me that i got physical whiplash. The first trap after the kidnapping, i was so unprepared i nearly passed out. And i dont normally have a weak stomach with horror movies. Perhaps some kind of mesh of shortening that long setup and easing viewers into the horror aspects wouldve been better?

That’s a very interesting perspective. The first part doesn’t drag at first but moreso once he started traveling. I found the slow walk through the facility in Mexico overdone. I also thought showing every person being captured was overkill there. It does shift and get intense fast with the forearm and then leg/marrow trap. I’m planning a follow up grading the traps with spoilers.
