Bamyan Buddha may have had religious significance back in the day. Today it has historic significance. Sometimes a historic article takes significance beyond a geographic boundary. If tomorrow the BJP government decides to demolish the taj mahal there should be global outrage.

That statue was historically cherished around the world and the destruction caused grief not just for Buddhists but for people around the world and especially Afghans. But the Bamyan buddhas were not a temple nor a book, nor did it have any active worshippers. So it cannot be compared to a mosque or a Quran or a temple or Geeta. No, the majority of Muslims do not destroy idols unless they are present in predominantly Muslim countries governed by Sharia. According to this explanation the destruction of the Bhamian statue was the correct thing for 2 reasons the first being that the Buddha never condoned idolatry so to make Buddhists aware of that fact , the destruction was fair. The second is that, as it was the Taliban that governed Afghanistan it was their prerogative to destroy it if they wished so. If you use the same argument (the second one) is it fair to destroy all mosques in non majority islamic countries? because it is within the right of that government to do so if they wish to and no one in that country or any islamic majority country has no right to protest against that. Do you agree with that argument which is fair as an argument while i never would subscribe to it. Because i believe in religious tolerance and anyone is free to believe in any religion of their choice. What type of tolerance is this. While i do not agree with the second imaginary event of destroying mosques in non majority islamic countries, at the same time i can't condemn it, if i agree with his second reason given for the destruction of the Bhamian statues because it is within the right of the government of that country if it wishes to do so. Most people of the world considered the Bhamian statues as marvels and a world heritage of the creative skills of a people who lived in the past and not as an icon of a religion. So where is the so called tolerance which Islam espouses so much about to the rest of the world even if the statues were considered as idols of the Buddha . Please also be aware that prophet Mohammed in his wisdom prohibited Allah, or Almighty god being depicted in a caricature or made in to a statue because the entire world is Allah, Almighty god or nature and is present everywhere and so cannot be made into one small caricature, statue, icon or idol. On the other hand most Buddhists consider that by creating an icon of thier messiah (as the prophet Mohammed and Jesus were messiahs ) the people will have some allegiance to the message conveyed by him although i agree that the Buddha never condoned idolatry and Just like the Muslms are asked to pray five times a day which is to make people aware about islam so that more people will be naturally inclined towards following the religion and making this world a better place to live for the people. Allah in Islam or Almighty god in Christianity which is none other than nature(if you want to call it Allah by all means do so) to which all of us have to subjugate ourselves willingly or unwillingly. (Insha Allah), The Buddha never dictated a set of precepts to follow blindly but to use your own wisdom to realise that there is a set of rules in nature(call it Allah if you wish so) that cannot be avoided by praying, worshipping or by way of offerings (pleading, submitting or offering bribes to nature or Allah or Almighty god) but to realise that, that is the way it is and if you have wisdom you can escape the suffering that is only a mind made illusion. May Allah help you realise that the whole world is an illusion of the mind and that is why when you are fast asleep there is neither the world nor you. That is equal to death in which neither you nor the world exist. You are not aware of your heart beat etc when you are aseelp but become aware of them only when you are awake and think that you were alive during your sleep only after you wake up from your sleep. May Allah help you realise this! and let there be peace in this illusory material world which in truth is an illusion of the mind.

Destroying a statue in the middle of nowhere that serves no religious purpose (not even allowed in Buddhism) is not the same as destroying mosques that serve an active religious purpose and are places of worship for Muslims every day. To put this in another way, it is not okay for a state to destroy a place of worship like a Church or Synagogue that is actively used, but there is no problem with destroying a giant statue of Jesus or Moses which has no place in Christianity and Judaism and also makes the majority of the people uncomfortable.

Dr. Naik is a respected comparitive studies scholar and answers questions were satisfactorily but I am not sure what he is doing here. This should have been a straight yes or no answer backed by what's in scripture but he has gone into some twisted logic of his own which I find hard to buy. This is no way of educating anyone as he claims. The blowing of the statues was taliban's pandering to their massive egos n bigotry. I believe that what the Taliban did was a grave mistake. This action did not help the Buddhists to learn any lesson nor did it spread any great lesson about Islam. On the contrary, it contributed well to harm the Muslim community and Islam in many ways. The Taliban is not representing the Muslim community nor are they the saviours of Islam. You need to apologize to the Afghan people and ask Allah for forgiveness. 99% of Afghan have been muslims for well over a 1000 years and most are practicing muslims. They did not need to wait for Taliban to destroy the buddha statues. Furthermore, when the sahaba kiram brought Islam to Afghanistan they could have destroyed the statues if the statues would have harmed the muslim faith. Therefore, there is no justification in Islam about destroying the buddha statues unless you know more the the first generation of Sahabas. Finally, sir it is these types of talks that has confused the uma because our scholars want to show off and protect their egos and most of them have turned the religion into their full time business for the wrong reasons. Sometimes in order to protect their business they have to save face. Please do not get me wrong. I respect your over all religious knowledge. I appreciate your hard work and apologize in advance if I have miss spoke but we all need to be careful and speak only on subjects that we have knowledge of. Islam is a very simple religion and the lines between right and wrong is very clear. Whoever tries to blur the lines looses face. This video is extremely offensive to Afghans. Dr. Naik is a respected comparitive studies scholar and answers questions were satisfactorily but I am not sure what he is doing here. This should have been a straight yes or no answer backed by what's in scripture but he has gone into some twisted logic of his own which I find hard to buy. If the Buddhist scriptures does not say that they should build a statue it also does not say that they should not either. If the Buddhist scripture said that they could build a statue, would you still destroy it then since you scripture says you should not build any statues? Why are you, and who are you to correct someone else about their faith. According to them they think they are right just as much as you think you are right. If according to some other religion, building a place of worship is wrong as per their scripture and the land becomes theirs. Oddly enough, these statues were actually built during the 6th-7th centuries, when a Turkic empire called Hephtalites aka White Huns ruled this area. There was a turkic tribe called Kalaj amongst them. This empire practised buddhism before they were conquered by Muslims. After a long period of time these Kalajis intermixed with the local population and become pashtunisized. Today their heirs are called Ghilzai or Ghilji, from Kalaj-zai = sons of the Kalaj. The Taliban leader who gave the order to destroy this statues was from the Ghilzai tribe himself (of the Hotaki subgroup). Mullah Omar Muhammed.... history is mindblowing...

That excuse is very gratuitous. Yes, buddha wanted no statues but historically the cultures of that time and to to this day feel the need of imagery. Buddhists religiously would shrug their shoulders and point to the fact all is change. Nothing is permanent BUT the statues had historical and cultural significants.

According to Sri Lanka’s Department of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs, 1,479 temples were destroyed in eight war-affected districts of the country’s northern and eastern provinces between 1983 and 1990. But that, say many, is a conservative estimate and the actual number of temples damaged and desecrated by the Sri Lankan armed forces till the end of the war would number around 10,000. While some are being restored, most are still in ruins and a few have even been converted into Buddhist viharas and temples. Jaffna town itself has some small temples which are in ruins. Sri Lanka’s armed forces did exactly what the Taliban did to the Bamiyan Buddhas in March 2001 - they fired mortar shells at the temples, blew off their roofs and relented only after the garbha griha (or sanctum sanctorum) of the temples stood completely damaged. Not content with that, they destroyed the idols in the temples and desecrated the places of worship. While the world condemned the Taliban, the Lankan army’s abominations went largely unreported. Large swathes of the northern and eastern provinces are still pockmarked by remnants of the war - shelled-out houses and temples, devastated families living in squalid refugee camps, a large presence of Lankan armed forces, fear writ large on the visages of a beaten people. Many areas are still out of bounds for civilians. Even in areas “released” by the armed forces, the forces occupy the best private houses that they rebuilt after they had destroyed them. The owners of the houses do not dare lay claim over their properties

One time in western country a man asked Swami vivekanand " in ur holy book it is written what ever happened all things r good" how u explain it ? Swami vivekanand explained " what ever do you feel good for whole world it must be bad for any time or any place & vice versa" Nothing is good or bad. Only the situation decide what is good or what is bad. Ur explanation must be right at some point but at other point it must be wrong.

Dr. Naik is a respected comparitive studies scholar and answers questions were satisfactorily but I am not sure what he is doing here. This should have been a straight yes or no answer backed by what's in scripture but he has gone into some twisted logic of his own which I find hard to buy. This is no way of educating anyone as he claims. The blowing of the statues was taliban's pandering to their massive egos n bigotry. This can't not be called educating, you don't educate people by heaping humiliation on them. Dr. Naik is very much out of depth here

Dr Zakir himself is double standard. When French newspaper made fun of prophet Muhammad . He is the one to protest. It's their property. Why are you objecting then. If west ban burkha then why do you object.
