Was the Geforce 4 Ti 4600 Good or Bad?
Today, we're take a look back at the GF4 Ti 4600 and work out was it a good or bad GPU? Did Nvidia rush out a new GPU, or was it relevant for the time.

Some beautiful photography! Excellent video! One thing to note quickly is a bone stock Ti4600 should actually be running at 650MHz (effective) memory. 550MHz would be the Ti4400 (or 4800SE).

A friend of mine bought a Ti4600 on launch day and I remember watching him playing Dungeon Siege for hours at some insane resolution and graphical settings. It was a beast of a card, short lived due to it's complete fail at DX9. It made my GF 2 Ultra look slow in comparison. Interestingly, a few years back EVGA wanted someone, anyone, to send them a model of their own Ti4600 because they had lost theirs from their display. They were willing to pay $1000 EVGA dollars, essentially you could have swapped a Ti4600 for a 1080Ti back in 2018, if you were lucky enough to have an EVGA Ti4600 in your spares box. I don't have a Ti4600 anymore but I have a Ti4800, which is just the same but with 8x AGP (I think).

Very nice. I have a Chaintech GeForce 4 ti4600 card. It has black pcb with gold heatsinks. It quit working and was past the warranty so I just kept it. I also have some other older card like a Voodoo 3 pci, a Voodoo 5 AGP, a GeForce 3 card that I can't remember the model of, and I think a Diamond Viper card I think it came out around the Voodoo 3 times. Ahh great memories. As far as I know they all work except the Chaintech card.

Then when my pentium 4 desktop got problem i go buy spare parts like PSU 30 dollars & new graphic card about 1 hundred dollars to last me for 1-2 years before i bought my Intel core 2 duo E8500 on Feb2009 until May2024 with a new afox motherboard bought on july 2019 that supports DDR 3 dual channel 1066mhz. But window 7 -64bit no longer support so i cannot install new graphic card driver of GT 1030 on intel core 2 duo and that is why i bought AMD 4600G.

You should just be aware that this will force you to use quite late GPU drivers, which have much higher CPU overhead. If you go with something "slow" like a pentium III slot 1 system you might want a geforce 2 or something instead. With a fast CPU the overhead doesn't matter.

@@MikesTrackBuilding Ebay prices probably a couple of hundred dollars, when it eventually sells. That's what people are asking for them anyway. Local equivalents to ebay, maybe much less sometimes. That's due to the seller putting them up for a low starting bid and a bidding war just didn't happen by some random chance (there's a finite number of people at any given time looking for these and on smaller local auction sites you don't have as many bidders). Or for whatever reason there is something vaguely "wrong" with the card; not necessarily a real thing but ugly cooler design, noisy fan, non-descript OEM card. I bought a Quadro4 980 XGL ("ti 4600" workstation card) for $30-ish + shipping recently in my local currency. It's not branded ti 4600 and the cooler is fairly generic and does not really look like a ti 4600 cooler. Likely it's got better binned silicon than a "real" ti 4600, same exact hardware, and you can flash it to a ti 4600 if you really want that for some reason. I also have a dumpster find ti4400 that I don't think would sell for much. It's a ti4400 for starters, but it also has that heinous ASUS "blowfish" cooler. You saw that nice copper cooler on the ASUS ti 4600 in this video; well the ASUS ti 4400 sported this cooler: images.anandtech.com/reviews/video/roundups/2002/05/gf4tiroundup/asus4400f.jpg . Jesus why?

@@MikesTrackBuilding An original working Ti4600 in great condition (not the shitty ten a penny workstation variants) are worth a lot of money. They are one of the rarest "flagship" AGP GPU's along with the 6800 Ultra. I don't count the FX5800 Ultra because they are pretty much impossible to find and so fetch an insane price. Put the 4600 on AmiBay and it should sell for a similar price to eBay if you factor in the fees eBay takes post sale. Ballpark figure would be £120-£200 depending on condition and model. Lots of people looking for the rare Ti4600. You shouldn't be waiting too long. Just make sure to upload lots of decent pics of the card and how it works on AmiBay. Good luck!

Out of curiosity, why go for a jet turbine 5800 Ultra when the 5950 Ultra is a faster, cooler and far quieter performer? Also seems easier to find. I hope that if you do find a 5800 Ultra, it goes under your desk so you can hear your games. Lol.

@@redleader6442 Well, it's just for collecting purposes, not to actually use it. I already own every version of the FX 5900 series including the 5900 XT, 5900 vanilla, 5900 Ultra, and the 5950 Ultra. Obtaining the 5800 Ultra is just a 'gotta collect them all' situation. At this point I've mostly give up looking for one.
@redleader6442
@redleader6442 2 жыл бұрын
Something tells me that the cause for your hardship in locating one is because of the inefficient cooling method NVIDIA used causing them all to eventually burn out. Maybe find one with a third party cooler? Did Asus or EVGA make any? Also, I get it. I use my 5950 Ultra for my XP era gaming, so it's easier for me to assume that people get cards to use them as often as they collect them.

For windows 98SE gaming the ti4200 is not necessarily the one to get. CPU overhead was added to the drivers gradually from the TNT2 to the geforce FX, really weighing them down on a slow CPU. For something like a pentium III slot 1 system what you want is somewhere between TNT2 and geforce 2, or maybe a voodoo 2. If you have a very fast CPU like a athlon XP or tualatin the Ti4200 or one of the FX series makes a lot of sense. If you get an FX 5900 non-ultra, which is still occassionally found cheaply, you get a lot of CPU overhead, but you also get almost free anisotropic. 9700 is more of a collectors card. They had a bad shim/cooling pad solution and finding them now is expensive and they might not work very long. The 9800 is a better bet and much cheaper (pro or non-pro or XT doesn't matter much, just don't get the 128-bit memory version) , but feels more like a windows XP card to me. I opted for a Win98SE system that is "authentic" (what I had) with a TNT M64 and one that is rather spicy for a windows 98; with FX 5900 non-U with a fast core 2 duo. A3D 2.0 is essential and a key part of the reason to own a windows 98 machine.

I'll try answers what I can. The gf4 cards are good for high resolution win98 gaming vs something like a pair of 3dfx V2s that's limited to 1024x768. I have a P3 1.4 tualitin 98 system with a GeForce 2 ti and my 2 voodoos in it. That's my preference.
