When you live long enough, it's so strange. I knew a couple who had been members of the People's Temple when it was in Indiana. They said it was genuinely a beautiful community, and they were bummed out that they couldn't afford to go to California. They were shocked at the news from Guyana. Now days, I'm old, and go to a dog park and meet old former whatevers, and met a student from Guyana who said that ever since the Jonestown thing, religions are hugely monitored, and it's against the law for them to buy tracts of land beyond a church building. Most people don't even like religions there, now.

I’m from Guyana. The whole thing with Guyana at the time was that the government was heavily involved with the Soviet Union. The country was pretty socialist at the time. Interestingly enough around that time, the 70-80s, the government nationalised a lot of companies. The one I know the most about was a bauxite mine owned by Alcoa. I was once told that the socialist government, was one of the reasons Jim Jones chose Guyana. As far as military, they have one but I don’t think that there is any reality where it would have been a threat to the US. But, I could see the Soviet Union, having a base or something in the country at that time. Oh! French Guiana is a different country from Guyana. Suriname is between them.

Thanks for making this one! My grandmother was almost among the Jonestown victims--only the fact that my uncle was entering his senior year of high school and needed support writing his college admissions papers, etc. persuaded her to postpone her plans to follow Jones to Guyana. She was a staunch civil rights activist, and frankly she and many of his followers would LOVE to have been on CIA/FBI watchlists, because that would mean they were making a difference. But, alas, the only thing it was a front for was a narcissistic predator who did a ton of drugs, just not the government issued ones. She lost friends, and a lot of illusions. I can't watch the Casual Criminalist episode--like Bundy it hits too close to home...literally. But this gave me some grim amusement while keeping superficial to the depths of the tragedy, so I appreciate it.

I grew up just outside of San Francisco . The Peoples Temple moved there when I was just 6 years old. They were only there for a few years, but I remember hearing about nefarious incidents and accusations on the news. Jones got involved in local politics. Someone set fire to their church. Then they moved to this "glorious paradise" in Guiana. All his followers seemed so peaceful. I remember the first haunting images from the helicopter hovering over the bodies on the news. Every time the subject is brought up, I can see that image. I never believed that all those people chose to die. Now you know where the saying , " Don't drink the cool aid. " comes from . It was so easy for people to get swept up in to cults in the 70's. Jones , in S.F. , targeted the poor and struggling, Blacks and Hispanics. He told them of a better life in community and service and then murdered them all. He was a narcissistic megalomaniac .

I'm a San Francisco native who was a young adult during the 1970s, and it was a truly bizarre era in which cults of all kinds were everywhere, and crime was rampant (millions of males late teens to early 20s coming of age). I passed the SF Peoples Temple on my way to work and the horrible tragedy that followed plus the assasinations at City Hall later in 1978 left a real pall on the City. No one who lived there then will ever forget it.

We always do christmas eve at my in laws, usually at some point a few of us end up in the garage having a drink and taking a smoke break. My father in law (retired air force) came out to have a cigar and cults come up, specifically Jim Jones.. and then my father in law just casually drops his first, bear with me I'm not military and can't recall the term he used.. but its the equivalent to a mini deployment/mission, was to go down and bring all the bodies back from this event. My husband was quite surprised, not once had his dad over the years ever mentioned it. I had that week just watched the Casual Criminalisy on this 😂

He touched on it on Brain Blaze not too long ago, but the premise of that video was conspiracy theories that you aren’t supposed to believe, meaning the person who started it was trolling or joking etc. (like the “birds aren’t real” guy) but I genuinely don’t think the person who launched this one was trolling. Maybe I’m wrong, but they seem like they wholeheartedly believe what they’re saying in my opinion, so I’d love to see it covered on this show too, treated like something that (stupid) people really believe. Lady of the Library did a really fantastic deep dive on it when it first emerged. Definitely a different energy than this channel but worth a watch!

We moved to Livermore Early 78 and watched the news about Jones town on tv. My parents had a couple discussions regarding if we had gone to the church would we have been there. scary stuff. I think the whole "doctor" thing has to do with PhDs being Doctors (as opposed to physicians). Anyone can lie about having a PhD, and often do, so pose as a Doctor and it may not even be illegal. Not sure about the legality of posing as a physician, although it should be illegal, especially if the poseur hurts someone. There are people in the US clutching their pearls over the fact that PhDs are Doctors, but not necessarily physicians.

A doctorate is just the highest degree in academics. A juris doctorate is a lawyer. A PhD is a Doctor of Philosophy. I have a doctorate in theology, so I am a doctor. A dentist is a doctor of dental surgery. Indiana Jones was called doctor Jones because he was a doctor of archaeology. A doctor of medicine is the one that gets you in trouble impersonating, but that’s only because practicing medicine without a license is a crime. The vast majority of other doctorates don’t require licensing.

I drove a taxi in Brisbane Australia for 15 years night shift, from 2000 onwards and we didn't have to wear a seatbelt because it could be used as a weapon of convenience. It could be used to choke or restrain the driver. It was also for convenience of getting in and out of the taxi to help passengers. The laws have since changed. I have been assaulted and abused and met all kinds of people in all sorts of conditions, but it could also alot of fun sometimes.

My dad did the same in London in the 80s and had a few close calls with crazy passengers too. One benign yet colourful character claimed to be the best pickpocket in the city and would try to tip him in stolen jewelry from time to time.

Nah. I don’t think it was a setup by the government or CIA this time. If so they did a piss poor job. My mom was a kid when it happened and would always get a wild look on her face whenever it was mentioned.Just watching on TV as a kid gave her PTSD. She’d also talk about the news lady who covered it and how the usually well made up lady with perfect hair looked like she’d been into hell and died in a car crash not long later.

It was probably the kgb. They are the ones who btw started pushing the conspiracy theory that jfk was killed by the cia and mlk by the fbi. Regarding jfk, Oswald literally defected to the Soviet Union, had a Russian wife who was a kgb agent and he was trained by them. People jumping to the conclusion it was the cia is ridiculous because it’s obvious it was the kgb. Khrushchev nearly fainted at the news of jfk. He was certain they would get nuked. The cia covered up the fact they did it to avoid war.

“The Soviets would have known!” Are you sure about that, Simon? Go re-watch that famous video from the “US A-Bomb” tests on Residential Homes. Then ask yourself, how’d the Camera/Flim survive the explosion? In one scene you can see a “40’s style Car” behind one of the ‘Houses’ for a Frame, the ‘explosion’ goes off, and the car disappears from the Frame before it’s “Hit.” The Soviets fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

Yep the first commercially available floppy disk was in 1971. Eight inches or 20cm. It probably wasn't used in government buildings though until the 80s. Government was probably still using punch cards or R to R.

For the US doctor thing, the only people who can rightfully call themselves doctors are either medical doctors, or people who have earned their PhD (which medical doctors often have anyways) since they are called Doctorate degrees as well. Those who call themselves doctors and it isn't medical typically make it easily known they aren't actual medical doctors. Some unqualified people do also call themselves doctors but its not a great lie and really easy to find out. Hopefully this clears it up for any of you out there who don't know this. TLDR: In the US, someone being called a doctor who isnt medically trained is often just a prestigious title from a well-earned degree rather than anything mischievous because it is the highest and most difficult degree you can attain here in the States.

Yup, my sister has her PHd in biochemistry. She could technically call herself doctor, but she never has as it can cause confusion. There’s a lot of people here that don’t understand that super advanced degree can also give that title as it’s a “Doctorate.” Many that could, don’t. I will also note that it causes issues with Psychologists if they call themselves Drs, some can prescribe as they were legitimately trained as a medical doctor that specialized in psychology (slightly different track than psychiatrist, who absolutely are always actual medical doctors), while others just have their Doctorate in Psychology. I’ve come across this confusion as well within the physical rehab/physical therapists too… some are trained med doctors, but many just have a doctorate in some flavor of rehab (I forget the term used.) It’s not a protected title to a strict sense-ie always means a certain level of training. It just says how far people got in Uni.

In the States it’s illegal to claim to be a doctor (or any other profession- medical physician, or practice, you’ll end up in prison … Simon you’ve got that confused with PHD, some will fraudulently claim, but if its not rightfully obtained it’s still not recognized… Your a big brain Simon , but you’ve said this once before, hopefully your joking.

However you can get a PhD from unaccredited universities in the US. For example the stupid dissertation by Kent Hovind which means he can call himself a Doctor.

That's the day I learned children can die 😢 and daddy's cry. It gave me nightmares for weeks afterwards.......... because you know when you are a child🙃 you're expected to cry when something bad happens to you! So when I saw my Daddy silently crying I knew it was really really bad. My daddy fought in two wars, was a sharpshooter and one of the guys, who helped get those trapped behind enemy lines, out and used a body bag for a lawnmower cover! Seems him cry made me cry even harder and I pray nothing like that never happens again!

Your comments brought tears to my eyes because so many people are not sensitive to the horror and pain the devil brought to the world through the abuse of the peace-seeking (and manipulated) followers. I lost my best friend, her brother and their parents, to that awful leader and that event has shaded my entire life since, I was only 15 years old at the time. I have felt that I must live my life fully, and I live as though I am living as a force of nine hundred people who were murdered and denied their lives. That is why I will never take my own life; the despair force of evil that overwhelmed Jim has taken enough kind people from this world already and so I won't give my life over to causing more pain to the living people. The Jonestown Institute at San Diego State University has the largest collection of information about the Peoples Temple, from beginning to end. The audio recordings from Jonestown are truly wild. I do not think the CIA orchestrated the Jonestown Massacre. However, I do not think it’s unreasonable that it was a side effect of one of their projects. Jim Jones is documented to have been in multiple countries simultaneously and he was deeply involved with CIA and FBI agents on a personal level.
