Located on a 2,000 foot ridge overlooking the Syrian plains, this medieval fortress combined Eastern and Western architecture to create the ultimate defense.

Actually from what I understand the Muslim architecture was an adaption from the orthodox Christian architecture. The first Mosques were orthodox Christian Churches.

Architectural archaeologists have found how mosques have changed over the centuries to imitate the orthodox churches. Let me qualify the first statement. the first mosques in the Levant were orthodox churches.

The first mosque was the mosque of the prophet which he build by his own hands but later mosques with mosaics and stuff to some extent have orthodox influence like the first mosaics and large pillars were taken from a axumitecoptic cathedral which used to be located in yemen it was the largest cathedral in all of arabia at the time(it was looted and destroyed later) thats when Christian architectural influence on mosques started , again the first mosques werent churchs but did have many influence from them and many muslims did use to pray in churchs, the base of mosque architecture is still the mosque the prophet built

The Christians taught the Muslims invaders who occupied their lands before the Crusades, how to design and built. Dr. Benjamin is wrong when he said the Muslims local helped in designing some features of the castle. He should have said: “the Christians of the original land taught the Muslims how to design and built.”

Dear Smithsonian, How is this castle holding up in the modern Syrian Civil War these days? Which faction occupies it, and is it being used as an actual fort? (I sure hope not. I'd hate to see another irreplaceable historical landmark destroyed by the vagaries of modern war.)
@gorillaguerillaDK

We can only hope that it doesn't get destroyed completely - we've seen other medieval structures stand the test of time and "modern" warfare during WW2 - hopefully this will continue to exist as well....

@@branis96 you are correct , i was using the word european to encompass all cultures from europe . In this case i was refering to greek architecture (byzantine , which is european).
@branis96
@branis96 3 жыл бұрын
@@davazno1269 byzantine was not european.. again the word europan have no meaning in history, it's just a modern word used to define a political map created in the last centuries.. the word itself may have a phoenician or phoenician-related meaning byzantine empire had plenty of emperors and architects and famous figures of middle eastern origins.. the byzantine itself was called an oriental empire and for greece, it was more connected to the oriental world (middle east) than to the western world, every person with little knowledge of history (just little) will see and know that, from the minoan civilization to the macedonian empire to the byzantine empire.. for example according to historians minoans were originally from the levant, macedonian empire capital was babylone and same for its culture and didn't have any connection to the west, byzantine empire had plenty of emperors of arab or armenian or other middle eastern origins and didn't have any connection to the west most of those architectures are oriental in their origins, so when you talk about history, use history logic, not names created by colonialists some centuries ago..

@@davazno1269 Your comment doesn't prove any point from which i said.. even from the titles of the books you mentioed it's written "History of *Byzantine* Civilisation" and "The Last *Byzantine* Renaissance".. what are you proving here exactly? "Dario Fernandez Morere", a Christian Spanish writing a biased book which was replied to by the way.. no thanks.. i prefer reading real books with a logical points and from real sources

The fortress has been build on another fortress which is originally aramean and the syrian ministry of traces found a aramean basaltic statue in their traces explorations in the fortress In addition the fortress hasn't been build by crusaders rather it has been build by kurds before and assassins before crusaders came and mamluks took it back from crusaders and rebuild again and add new architectures

The Hungarians built it during the Crusades, from the taxes from the Transylvanian salt mines, When the fortress was surrendered, the defenders had enough food for 5 years in the castle)) and there is drinking water inside to this day.

False! The current Krak de Chavallier was completly build by the crusaders. Before, there were only rumbles of a castle of the kurds, which was complety destroyed in an earth quake (arab sources say, not a single stone was left on the other).
