Fun fact: There's a similar claim in Brazil related to the same event. It's part of the Mandela Effect, also. Basically a lot of people remembered watching a cartoon Dragon Ball Z, more specifically the episode where Goku turns super saiyan 3 and was interrupted with news from 9/11. Years after a lot of people "remembered" this trivia until someone found out the actual program schedule of the channel on that day and called bullshit.

Nothing defines the shift from pre- to post-9/11 America like the mental image of Dana Carvey in that turtle costume, taking a moment of silence to honor those killed in a tragic terrorist attack. It perfectly encapsulates the era that was ending and perfectly foretells the one that was beginning. I thank you for appreciating both the power of this image AND the danger of misinformation. And I am beyond grateful that the story is true enough to still resonate.

That's legitimately profound; it has a real "90s Rick Moranis" comedy vibe that completely disappeared post 9/11. It marked the end of the optimistic golden age of 90s America. Fukuyama was wrong - history didn't end when the USSR collapsed and liberal hegemony was established; it ended when Dana Carvey became turtley enough for the turtle club.

@@DevineInnovations I was born in '97, one of my first major memories was 9/11, specifically, a classmate in kindergarten mentioning how his dad was in the WTC when it happened (thankfully a survivor). It's one of those things that I never really think about but my older siblings have mentioned a few times - my entire childhood was marred by the wars fought and now as an adult, I have to fight due to my gender and sexual identity in a world that's feeling decreasingly accepting as time goes on. I've never really known true peace, and I don't think I ever will. This might all sound kind of overdramatic. I've had a long, draining year, and I'm tired of a lot of things.

It's such obvious bullshit if you're old enough to remember 9/11, even ignoring the fact that it would be 6 in the morning pacific time. They think that they'd have a moment of silence after hearing the news? Like it was a celebrity death, just one thing that quickly happened and is immediately resolved? Like "Oh, four planes just crashed in NY, DC, and PA, two skyscrapers collapsed, and 3 thousand people just died." "When?" "Within the past five minutes!" Shit was *chaotic* and people were freaking out where I lived, in a rural area. I can imagine it'd be more insane in LA. People weren't sure if more things weren't going to be attacked, if we were going to war like, the next day, or even *who* attacked. If they were filming that day, I promise that they would have immediately canceled production, would have sat in front of the TV, would have called any loved ones in NYC, and they would have *definitely* canceled after news of the second plane hitting. Outside of first responders/government/support people/etc, very few people in America actually had a productive work day that day. Them delaying production for two weeks is exactly what they would have done, and actually did do. It strikes me as a factoid written by someone who wasn't old enough to remember 9/11.

Straight from the TV Tropes Page: "The "Turtle Club scene was filmed on 9/11" story. For years, there was a story going around that the Turtle Club scene was being filmed as 9/11 happened, and there was a moment of silence with Dana Carvey in full Turtle Man costume. What actually occurred was the Turtle Club scene was delayed because of 9/11. Though when filming resumed on September 24th of that year, there was indeed a moment of silence with Carvey in full costume."

If anything, this makes the situation even more comedic: they had two weeks to decide how and when to broach the subject on set - if at all. The fact it wasn't just a poignant letter to the cast and crew or some separate observance, but a full-blown on-set moment of silence after everyone was already in make-up and ready to film this... It feels like it was plucked out of a dark comedy.

I learned not to trust IMDb trivia a few years ago from a similar video. It was about that scene in The Dark Knight where the hospital explodes. According to legend there was an unexpected pause in the explosions and Heath Ledger saved the shot by pretending his detonator was malfunctioning. It's been mentioned in multiple best improvised moments lists. Except just like the Turtle Club 9/11 thing, you can't trace where that myth came from and no one who worked on the movie has been sited talking about it. For a big budget movie doing a massive stunt like that, it was probably very well rehearsed with all actors involved knowing exactly what they where doing. But it does make a fun story about a great actor we lost too soon so I can see why it got passed around so frequently.

I think that is actually true. If you look at the "explosion" as he is walking, there is absolutely a malfunction as there is "debris" being launched, but no flames or smoke going off. At least that sounds a lot more reasonable. I could see it happening, there being a slight delay in whatever cue Heath was looking for and just pretending the detonator was jacked. That’s not too witty probably the first place most peoples minds would go if that happened to them. It’s also a trivia you wouldn’t necessarily expect someone to make up, unlike 911 jokes that people make all the time. But if no one with the capacity to confirm that has ever confirmed it, not looking good for it’s veracity

I just looked up a similar trivia about a Jackie Chan movie. He was meant to shoot a movie that day at the world trade center but it was postponed for some reason. It was supposed to be the opening scene of the movie where Jackie was working as a window cleaner. He also wrote about this opening scene in his autobiography book I Am Jackie Chan: My Life in Action 3 years prior 911. But the article I found said that when a catastrophe happens a lot of people try to capitalize on it, sew themselves into the history. Like when the Titanic sank people came out left and right telling their stories about how they were almost on the Titanic but miracuously missed it or something. You can't sure about these claim, but in the case with the movie, there are probably several evidences if it was actually shot on the same day or not.

Well every time you remember something, you alter the memory, and a catastrophe like 9/11 is something that probably lives in your head for a while. Another 9/11 thing: Boots Riley (director of Sorry To Bother You) and his band The Coup supposedly photographed an album cover in May 2001 depicting them in front of the Twin Towers exploding, with one of the band members holding a conductor's wand and Boots pressing a button on a tuner like they were causing the explosion. The album was scheduled to release in mid to late September 2001 and the label had to scramble to find new cover art. Now, this is just a throwaway line on wikipedia, and I haven't done literally any research or even made the basic effort to click through a single one of the sources, but in the spirit of this video I'm choosing to believe it's 100% true.

It holds more punch if it was actually on 9/11 but there's something more funny about it not happening on 9/11 because it wasn't a guttural impact to the news that caused it but a guy thinking "now's a good time to do this" as he looked a human turtle in the eye.

Interestingly, I don't even think the turtle club scene is the movies most infamously "out of place" scene. Personally, I think that honor should go to the one scene in the end credits that's one to one a Fembots from Austin Powers reference with the big-butted henchwomen and Dana Carvey shouting, "love is thicker than your behinds!" It's obviously a deleted scene but the fact it's still in the movie is amazingly "WTF."

It's pretty simple, someone said the attack happened while the movie was being made, and they had a moment of silence for the victims, someone assumed it means the attack happened during filming, and someone else assumed it means the moment of silence happened the day of the attack.

What I can't understand is how people cared enough about the movie to create this rumor in the first place. I was bombarded by tv ads about it on Nickelodeon, which made my susceptible kid brain think it looked like a good movie to see. After seeing it, probably on home video, it left such a little impression on me that I totally forgot about the movie until this very video was recommended to me by the algorithm. At least Kangaroo Jack was so bad that it at least taught me what a bad movie looks like.

Growing up, I had a friend whose family were probably the #1 fans of this movie lol. They all thought it was an underrated masterpiece. I remember watching it with them and being like "oh, ok. This is kinda funny." But they all loved it lol.

Legitimately despise the way IMDb works. It's great for being a database of movies, that aspect is fine but the lists/trivia etc; the way users can interact with the site flat out ruins the whole... y'know, accurately gathering data part of the site? It's so bizarre to me that it's allowed to be run like that

I wonder, why does he even need a disguised? Were there spies at the Turtle Cub? Because I'm sure Devlin's spies would tell him "We saw a big guy in a turtle suit". Like there were no spies, nobody to report to Devlin, Pistachio might as well showed up to the club in his normal cloths.

The Master of Disguise was my favorite movie of all time when I was a kid. I would watch it nearly every day. I remember being 7 and having a dilemma because I wanted to watch master of disguise first thing I woke up in the morning but I didn’t think it was appropriate to watch a movie during the daytime. I ended up overcoming my daytime movie reservations and enjoyed the turtle scene with my breakfast. And then later with my lunch. And then even later with my dinner. The Master of Disguise was what I lived and breathed as a child for several months straight. There were other movies that later took that throne for months at a time, such as Airplane!, The Garfield Movie with Bill Murray, and Big, the Tom Hanks movie. But none encompassed my psyche more than Master of Disguise

I'm still going to spread the misinformation because the reactions I'd get are worth much more than the truth. "They filmed the turtle club scene on 9/11" gets a much better turnout in the conversation than "the first scene they filmed for the master of disguise 2 weeks after 9/11 was the turtle club scene." It somehow makes it feel as though in the darkness of America's most tragic terrorist attack, a turtle shaped light was shining that day. I find comfort in that

According to the director, the rumor is ALMOST completely true. Dana WAS in a turtle outfit during their moment of silence for the victims. But that wasn’t actually ON the moment of September 11th. In fact, when 9/11 occurred, filming didn’t even begin yet. By the time the film was shot, they had a moment of silence a few weeks after the attacks.
