Was there an "Ancient Apocalypse?"

About a year ago Netflix released it's docuseries "Ancient Apocalypse" hosted by Graham Hancock. This docuseries proposes that during the last ice age glacial maximum there was an advanced complex society that experienced a cataclysm during the Younger Dryas after catastrophic comet impacts on the ice sheets. This created massive flooding which raised sea levels and destroyed this past society and all of it's remains. But some of them survived and journeyed to other societies as civilization bringers and taught them astronomy and megalithic architecture. But did this happen? Is any of it true? It's been a year since it's been released and the ideas in the docuseries are only getting more popular. While a lot of people have responded we wanted to weigh in with some insights from archaeologists who are active in the field . Let's dig in.

Thank you for putting this together. I appreciate the effort that went into putting together a nuanced approach to one of the 'Ancient...." docuseries. From the pulpit ministry, I do see some inherent dangers with a show being categorized as history. Over the last 15 years, I encounter people who regularly believe in the flat earth hypothesis, ancient aliens as plausible or as fact, and any number of largely unsubstantiated theories. As one of you said so well in the video, you cannot refute all of their Mr Hancock's claims in a short video, and he is welcome to submit his findings to academic review. Your content has helped me have something to share with church members that creates a culture of patient fact finding and integrity. Thank you for your work.

Thanks, Sean! It means a lot that what we’re doing is helping pastors who need resources to address these questions.

Except they are lying to you. First of all neither Hancock nor the questions being asked in the doc are racists. He's married to an African woman and has several African children and grandchildren. Calling him a racist is equivalent to calling Trump or mlk jr racist. Secondly, for every one "scientist" who refutes Hancock two agree with him. There is even an entire group of specialized scientists whom have priced him correct. I find it hilarious that so many are so willing to believe I've and water created the grand canyon but wouldn't have the power to remove a few homes, tools, settlements, etc.

Oh, and btw, let us not forget the pottery they use to date sites was a theory or fourth by a man they all claim was crazy in every aspect, except of course, using pottery to date. No one can honestly say this pottery congress from this time. That entire premise is based on Flander's belief. Not fact.

Let us not forget Hancock nor his supporters say these things are fact. They merely ask the questions. The very fact that they are attacked for simply asking the question, all of humanity should be outraged. If we cannot have the discussion, if we cannot all the questions how are we to improve and move forward? Here are at least three things I can think of off the top of my head that should force the discussion of lost advanced civilizations. A) Damascus steel. We pretend we make it. We pretend we know how it was made and how to replicate it. Inadequate males pretending to be yahweh (the Hebrew god of metallurgy originally one of 72 lesser gods married to the isrealites Supreme God Asherah) hammer or a mix of carbon and steel layers and call it Damascus, but it isn't. We still don't know how they made Damascus steel. B) the blade discovered in 1965 in an archeology dig. It was so pristine and sharp the archeologists cut their fingers on it. It looked brand new then and still does. It was 3000 years old then, but the technology to create the chromium sulfide alloy we didn't rediscover until 1937.

The forum and method of discussion do matter. Hancock can present his data at conferences. Instead, he has created an attack campaign undermining the credibility of those who disagree with him with people that do not have accesses to wider data. He has now enlisted public opinion in the campaign. He has made quite a bit of money from it - money that could have gone to legitimate archeological and historical work... Hancock is also rehashing an argument that is used to justify colonial atrocities and destruction. He may or may not be actively participating in discrimination, I do not know, but his video deteriorates the ability to have good discussions. Your points on the blades of Damascus steel sort of illustrate the point. I am not an expert on damascus steel, while I could be wrong you don't seem to be an expert either - but you have now used it to drag us into a debating minutiae which misses the point or perhaps illustrates perfectly Hancock's method of using irrelevant correlation to indicate causation. I am curious why you find the academy's methods distasteful, but not Hancock's? You are an odd duck... @@phillipstroll7385

And what is the biblical meaning of apocalypse? Helps to get the definition of words in that book, religion? A map yes if one reads it.

Archaeology did you forget the flood? Does any of this belong here or did it fall with the sand and water? Think about it noah....or did it buble up from below? Hmmmm

Why does the art at gobekli tepi have so much in common with art from around 2200 bce? Handbags? Those type of birds? That type of stone? That area? Saying that gobekli tepi is the one piece of art that stands apart as being 70 centuries older is an extraordinary claim, especially when we have such logical reasons to date it with the rest. I just need more extraordinary evidence to believe that. Also, if you theorize that white people started civilization, the theory is trash? Isn't that racist? Lol that's not why Grahams theories are bad. Grahams theories are bad because of the Chronology, and for the fact that they rest on so many other unproven theories. The younger dryas period just gets talked about like it's a fact. This is ridiculous because scientists have 69 different theories on how ice ages themselves could even be possible. So if ice age is a theory (69 theories actually), and the younger dryas is a theory that rests on one of those theories (not sure which one exactly), then why not critique this part of his theory? Based off of all the rhetoric I heard in this video I think I know exactly why you framed it this way. Gatekeepers smh.

As a Christian who has studied Hancocks work I can tell you what's wrong with your video. Hancock spends 90% of his time giving evidence on his "theories" and 10% discrediting academia. Your video was 90% discrediting Hancock and 10% giving evidence to counter his claims. This is why people are venturing away from academia. He's been asking for a debate with any and all archeologists for DECADES and not a single one will accept. All archeologist, including you, have been invited. Please accept his offer and sit with him. That would actually be a great video to post.

I genuinely do not understand the connection that the channel is trying to make between racism and “chronology snobbery”. Seems like high brow virtue signaling nonsense.

This is your worst video yet. You've greatly mischaracterized Graham Hancock. You made several empty claims. If they were accurate, then you should have sourced them in the video rather than just stating them as though they were true and have us just take your word for it.
