Hey Roly, another good one! One thing you can do when you come to a switch point to a spur is to check to see if the switch has been spiked in one direction. This will definitely tell you if the switch/spur is no longer in use or still could be used. The switch in this video did not appear to have a spike at the switch point so it theoretically could still be used ... but by the looks of that rusty old lock on that switch, they'd have a hard time getting that unlocked to move the points. Just some observations from an admirer of yours. Thanks for what you are doing.

Are those concrete posts really concrete railroad ties or are they concrete barricades? You also have the concrete posts on the other side of the spur track. Those concrete posts on that side of the spur would seem to indicate that there could have been a road of some sort that would have been there. Thank you for finding this interesting location and for bringing it to our attention.

@@railrol82all the railroad tracks in the area where I live in a south suburb of Chicago havae been in place for over a century. I live near Thornton Junction where the the Canadian National (former Grand Trunk Western) crosses the joint CSX/Union Pcific north/south line. The CSX/Union Pacific line is the former Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad line from Chicago to Danville, Illinois and Terre Haute, Indiana. CSX's ownership of the line dates back back to the end of the Chicago & Eastern Illinois when the Louisville & Nashville Railroad obtained the line from Terre Haute. The Union Pacific's ownership goes back to the same time when the Missouri Pacific obtained the line from Danville, Illinois north. Both of those railroads then owned the line to Chicago from the point where the two lines mergered to run north to Chicago. About two miles west of me is the Canadian National's ex-Illinois Central "Mainline of Mid-America". North of me about a mile and a half is Dolton Junction. At Dolton Junction, the CSX/UP joint line crosses the Indiana Harbor Belt and another CSX line that was the former Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal trackage. These rail lines would not have cut any existing paved roads. Any roads that might have been paved would have been dirt roads.

I now regret that this video came out too late to provide valuable prototype information for my modelling efforts. :-)

Yikes! They had better replace that point rail that suffered a "stress fracture" or they'll be a derailment for sure. Judging by the indentations in the pavement on both sides of the tracks and the fact that the FEC has put up a barricade made out of old ties, I'd say there was a crossing there. Although it may have been a "private" crossing at one point. (One for employees at the industrial park) Interesting that the FEC uses a "self guarded" frog or common crossing with this turnout, instead of just a "conventional" frog that requires "guard rails" next to the stock rails opposite the frog. These frogs actually have the "guard rails" on the frog. Keep up the good work and stay safe brother and God bless.

Looks like someone was sleeping near the tracks and has a dresser there to get dress when they wake up to see the train. lol 😄 My guessing about those concrete ties and that asphalt might have been a small road that connects at one point but I could be wrong.

That rubbish is awful, and you say the line is still used? Strange that possible crossing, no evidence on the actual track but the hardcore and posts either side suggest something was there.

There definitely was a crossing there. Concrete posts on both sides of the tracks, i would say yes. Do railroads care about trash around their tracks.

Perhaps down the street there's a Motel 6 that has the line. "We'll put out the blight for you. And KFC Voodoo Chicken Boofay Sunday 11 to 7. I can assure you only a r r would pound old ties into the ground to reinforce the fact it's closed and prevent an accident. We have about 5 in Milwaukee and 5.or so out in Waukesha where about every other Xing was closed. When C&NW built their first piggyback terminal in Chicago in a high crime area they used old metal guardrails from the tollway system stuck on end. Nothing to hold onto sticking up 12 feet and can't dig down 5 feet buried. Looking at the Xing roadway it seemingly saw very little use and actually is in good shape It's possible that industry expanded and got the city to vacate the easement. Chalk it up to history
@railrol823 жыл бұрын
Geez, that was hilarious, Paul! "Motel 6, we'll put the light out for you" LOL. So you too believe this was a former crossing, got it. And it happened in your neck of the woods too. I guess it is more common than usual. Thanks as always for the views and comments, Paul!

If there were no dumping laws, just personal dignity and respect for property dictates proper disposal. On a side note, that dresser appears to be in decent shape. If so, somebody would gladly find a use for it.

It is hard to change the mindset of people. Most people don't care and litter because "it doesn't belong to them." Every time I go to the beach, I pick up one piece of litter and toss it. Hopefully someone is looking and does the same.
