The industry also lays off people who made best selling games too. Take your blinders off. Hi-Fi rush was a hit, everyone (and I mean everyone) loved it, and the entire studio was closed down by Microsoft.
@ikissfutebol1217 сағат бұрын
The audience is not 100% execs. Execs also have to react to shareholder demands. So while I don’t disagree, that part isn’t exactly how those things work. Also, imagine you are trying to pick up the pieces after losing your job. Having a resource to pull all of those resources together has to be crazy helpful. Many people likely don’t want to work for a major company and so trying to identify openings at numerous startups/indie/small studios would be very time intensive. Ultimately, the fact there is someone doing anything is better than no one doing nothing. People lose jobs to layoffs daily in this climate across all industries. Blaming someone for being part of the problem while likely not actually making any decision to cut jobs seems awfully thin. Sure, there is a likelihood some of his roles have led to cuts, but his job is not to lay anyone off. I would imagine some mergers actually save jobs, like when a smaller studio is bought when they were teetering on the edge. Just my two cents…

OK, so those are all fair points, but on the other hand: - Is there anyone who did MORE for people in the industry? It was mentioned that he helped quite a few people land a job, so input from the ones who are grateful to Amir for helping them find another job would provide additional context/perspective for anyone skeptical about this. - Speaking of perspective, the person from Larian who presented GOTY took his allotted time to speak about this very subject. So call it the Elephant in the room if you want, but it took balls to speak about it yet again in front of industry luminaries at that event. I only bring these up, because as someone who has been laid off in tech for the better part of this year, I've seen people create and build some amazing networks that started out with just a - you guessed it - a spreadsheet. And yes, you can lump the Games industry with Tech - it's been a brutal couple of years for us in this sector.

Barely any games that got voted for awards i was actually interested in. Theres indie games on steam miles better than some of these.
@SoundToxin21 сағат бұрын
Part of it is AAA games being crap, but also since the focus is mainly on games that came out this year, it's always gonna be hit and miss. Not every year will have good games. Though the problems kind of bleed into each other. There were probably good indies that came out this year that should've gotten more attention. With all the money that goes into a big event like this there's probably some bias. It wouldn't surprise me if most of the games nominated had donated to The Game Awards or related people/projects. Balatro probably being an exception there, but it could just be serving as the token indie game so people think they care somewhat about indie games. Geoff was basically humble-bragging the whole event about all these unreleased games he'd gotten to see or play already, he clearly hangs out with all these people throughout the year that are winning the awards.

This is a recovery moment from last years show. With all the layoffs in 2023, Jeff and the TGA’s ignored the situation. This was Jeff and TGA’s saving face. Amir is a bright light in the darkness in the last 30 months. He wasn’t in the industry or at Tencent when he started this effort.
