I used to love to swim as a kid. Matt Hooper being able to hold his breath for 2 minutes while swimming around was personally inspiring to me. So naturally this movie absolutely captured me. I watched it at least twice in the theater, and then dozens of times on VHS. I don't think I ever had any figures, but I had the boat, and my parents, being the creative folks they are, waterproofed it so it would float under its own buoyancy and I could play with it properly. Anyway, thoughts: The diving bell wasn't made to be a diving bell. He uses it to help him get stuff up from the sea floor. He can process salt water but only marginally better than a normal human(like it might take him a week or more to die of thirst as opposed to just a few days), so most of his hydration still has to come from fresh water. Deacon calls everybody cousin because the Smokers are literally all cousins. Back in the beginning at the atol that old dude said they were running out of unrelated people to reproduce with. That's why they offered the Mariner anything he wanted if he got that woman pregnant. Since the Smoker MO seems to be just killing everybody they come across, they probably ran into that problem a long time ago, but since they're descended from Ocealabamia they just rolled with it until everybody that was on that there boat were kin t'eachuther.

Waterworld is a pretty good movie. As you illustrated, the fact that the budget was enormous, and the production was troubled, vastly overshadowed the film itself. The reality is, none of that stuff should exist in Water World. As anything that sinks in the sea is lost forever, other than Costner bringing things up. But then you'd think they'd support mutants bringing things up from the sea instead of slaughtering them.

I think the best thing about Water World is how it communicates theme, messaging and character all at once. The Atollers are the good guys, they live in harmony with Water World and do eco friendly stuff. Like build their home out of recycled plastic and using their dead as fertalizer. Its grim, but it turns the films messaging into positive traits. The Mariner is literally a fish-man, he's more *of* Water World than anyone else. Its the force of nature heroic protagonist taken to its most logical extreme. Even the Smokers with their consumptive life style and literally living on the Exon Valdez highlighting the worst excesses of society. All of it communicated through set, costume and action. Without ever really giving a direct word to any of it.

The uncomfortable scenes in it are meant to be uncomfortable. There’s stuff like that in The Road Warrior as well. It’s a post apocalyptic adventure film. Yes some of it’s supposed to be fun, but there’s of course going to be darkness in there too. Never watch an Asian film then Tony because you won’t be able to handle their fluid approach to tone and genre.

One of the reasons why Waterworld went over budget was because the set was destroyed by a storm and they had to rebuild it. As Ryan brought up Spielberg did warn not to film it on the ocean, since he ran into issues years earlier filming Jaws.
@MyMonsterFX8 ай бұрын
I don't think I mentioned it but I love the fact that the massive set wasn't able to be tethered to anything so it kept floating away from the cameras or the ocean current would spin it around so they would spent an hour using their tug boats to bring it back into position.

Just finally watched this movie today with some friends. The Universal show is still super fun even though it's way different. I wonder if they modified the live show over the years because the main woman in the show is a badass whereas in the movie she really kind of was written horribly after she had to leave the merchant island thing he first visits. I mean who built the flying thing she had? There was just so many unknowns in the almost 3 hour movie. Other than that at least it was fun and entertaining to watch. Wasn't as bad as people made it out to be but at the time I'm sure it was boring in theaters.

Then again, it's not too bad to have. It is a limited edition. Anyway, I watched the theatrical version first. I often tend to do that before watching any other versions. I would say the Ulysses cut is better because there is more story to it. A lot of the scenes from that version were in the novelization, too.

It wasn't really a box office failure from Universal's standpoint. The final budget was 235 million. And the box office and money earned was 264 million. And an additional 8 million from Home Media. But Universal only spent 12 million themselves. The rest of the budget was mostly covered by investors. And Kevin spent $22 million to contribute to the budget. BTW, Kevin Costner's paycheck was $12 million. And of the earnings, Universal got 45% - so, $145 million So... For the movie studio... It cost them $12 million, and earned them $145 million.
