I used to live in Houston. I grew up there. I've been through that tunnel many times. Now I live in Honolulu. We have H.P.D. here too.

When I was a child and went in there for the first time it was amazing, the radio stopped working, then the lights in the tunnel made me go "oooooh". even now in my mid 20s when I come from Channelview, I go through the tunnel just because

My grandfather used to work at the old Champion paper mill right there I mean I'm 61 years old now I've been through that tunnel millions of times I live in Channelview now and I go through there to go see my sister or anytime I need to go to Deer Park or Dixie used auto parts artist see my brother-in-law or my uncle I grew up in Deer Park Pasadena and as long as I can remember that's been the way we went across the channel and if it's ever taken away or destroyed in my lifetime it's going to be a real sad ending to me that's been a Houston staple for 71 years

The things my parents did to entertain my brother and me. A trip out to and through the tunnel. EXCITING doings in the 50s.

When I was little in the 1950s, we always took visiting relatives to Houston through the Washburn Tunnel and to the San Jacinto Monument. My grandmother pronounced San Jacinto "san-ya-sin-ya."

I drive through this tunnel every day for work, morning and evening. Traffic is so bad at those times!

My family gathered with the many other curious people to 'walk thru' the tunnel on opening day. There were giveaways so this ramped up the interest in this new wonder. Who couldn't use a new washer or dryer? Even as a child I pondered, "why only 2 lanes ( thinking of future growth)?". I understood the growth issue but not the funding of the project.

So it's really not true that Santa Anna was caught near here when he tried to enter but it was closed for cleaning?

My son and I went through it yesterday twice. We loved it but I miss the baytown Laporte Tunnel that was destroyed to build the Hartman Bridge

Randy Schattel I have driven through the Washburn Tunnel many times when I was a Kid, I remember playing on I-10 at Waco when it was a Dirt Rd. We would see 1 car riding on that dirt once a week. To see it now just blows my mind. I wish we could afford a camera back then. This would be a memory. Share this Video with your Mom. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHyloWShoLOmY9U
