To me, Washed Out has always had the ability to seize feelings and moods and render them into beautiful images and sounds. Beyond its hip aesthetics, this video portrays something elusive, gracious and dream-like but also sad and profoundly moving. This director captured everything Washed Out is for me. I’m speechless.

when i listen to masterpieces like this, i wonder if some people are just born with an innate sense of sadness. i think some retain sadness as an intrinsic part that can be hindering, but beautiful at the same time.

The fact that this video is for Weightless, yet it combines Entrance before slipping right in to Weightless playing backwards. THEN begins the song. And finally ending with All Over Now. God I love Paracosm. Washed Out is so awesome.

Ernest's music is just incredible...he has such a firm grip on the magic, the joy & the yearning nostalgia of the music of the psychedelic age. For those of us old enough to remember those days and its music with fondness, the music of Washed Out is like a trip back through a time machine to those hazing, floating days of the Summer Of Love. So much heart & soul in this music, it's just haunting and rejuvenating at the same time. Just found out he's coming back to San Diego on my birthday...can't wait. What a great way for an old hip-eye like me to turn 60. Peace.......

Stereogum wrote this about the video... back in June... "But the cinematography is so pretty that you almost can’t believe it, and it has all these great dream-logic cutaways to slow-motion hummingbirds and bodies suspended in air, and the whole thing amounts to a blissfully sad viewing experience..." Blissfully sad... but heart breakingly beautiful.

Yeah, listening to the whole album is so amazing because the songs meld so well. That part is just so extremely well done, playing the next song in reverse as the intro. So, if you want a longer version of that soundspace, just take a weightless mp3-file and reverse it in Audacity. It's a bit freaky to do but works with other Washed Out songs such as "You and I" and "All I Know".

He learned to love himself. He blossoms in his dream, harms himself in reality. His wrist is cut when he's hanging out of the car window, but then later when that shot appears his wrist is not cut. He dreams of what could be, and that feeling of living your greatest dreams is like weightlessness. He opens his hands, reveals his spirit, the bird. He can fly, but he just had to fall first, and we as the viewer are the witness to his fall, but I believe he can fly.

I think this is one of the reasons why this video is to incredible. The attention detail. If you notice, the shots are _exactly_ the same. The scar is the only difference. The reason why, I haven't figured it out yet. Still, I think it's brilliant.

Kubrick used to conceive these continuity mistakes on his movies. He believed that would make people bother or uncomfortable with the scene by apparently unknown reasons - since it was just on the background, not on the focus of the image. Like using a full bottle of wine in a scene and drinking it as it's getting recorded. That would as well allow him to put extra textual information on his movies, like the situation of the set during the scene. It's up to you to picture it as intentional or a slight play of images haha.

I don't understand how some people get to know you and it seems as though you both have feelings for each other, but some how along the way, something changed, as though the other person's feelings just vanished, it's confusing and painful when someone that says they have feelings for you suddenly denies it, it's like what now? anyway, I guess what will be will be...

+Cherry Chanel What you are describing I have encountered many times. It usually seems to be some sort of turn off from one side. Like the person who had feelings for you experienced / realized something which caused those feelings to dissolve. I actually have been on that side of losing your feelings in an instant too. I liked this girl, I thought she was really smart, good looking and pretty much perfect for me. However, after getting to know her a bit better I started to see through her and could see her state of mind more clearly, and when I did, it turned me off. It turned out that she isn't my type at all, she is materialistic and in a completely different social state of mind than I am. Things that are important to me aren't to her. The things in life I give most meaning too aren't the same as hers. So if this happens where someone suddenly loses their feelings for someone it is because they got to know them a bit better and can see the differences more clearly, causing them to realize that that person isn't what they are really looking for after all. We often build up attraction before actually truly knowing a person, and people ALWAYS portray themselves how they want to be perceived by others. So what you see isn't always what you get, in fact, people do their absolute best to hide all their flaws because of insecurity and other factors. I have become very careful with this now. I know when I'm just starting to get to know a person of the other gender that their ego has developed an act to portray them to the outside world as how they want to be perceived, not how they really are. It takes time to see through this act and see what is actually going through this person's mind.
@CherryDarlingno1
@CherryDarlingno1 8 жыл бұрын
***** that was pretty insightful, I do kinda know what you mean... I don't know why people do this... pretend I mean, what's the point, you know... I've learned to just be myself... it's too hard to pretend, especially after things I've been through, it's just not worth it.
@jaritheskater
@jaritheskater 8 жыл бұрын
Cherry Chanel Well, a lot of people seem to *really* care a lot about what others think of them, even more so than how they think about themselves. If you look closely you can see it everywhere. People pretend they are enjoying themselves while going out and getting wasted on weekends, while in reality they are just drinking away their problems ( hating their daily routine ). The whole party life is all about acting like some alpha male asshole to attract females to have sex, which again in this case they do because they have nothing better to do and feel they need it. Be glad you have found yourself, don't ever let go of it. I have been through an unimaginable load of shit myself, so I can't pretend either. But looking back at my younger years I have pretended a lot to try to fit in with the rest. People just don't love themselves enough to show their true face to the world. A lot of people also can't handle being alone, so they do everything they can to surround themselves with people. Lastly, I do get some people who pretend to be something theyre not in order to attract someone. Me being myself leads to barely being able to connect with anyone except really intelligent and open minded people who are on the same level as I am. I have risen far above the average consciousness, and now it is extremely hard to make new friends, mostly because I get bored of how simple minded they are and also because they get bored of my none stop philosophy. Sometimes I wish I could be simple minded so that I wouldn't be such an outcast, but I'm still glad I'm so aware of reality so I wouldn't have it any other way.

Fantastic song... great video but its sad. Someone below asked in comments if the boy was gay an committed suicide. Yes thats the jist of it. He & his buddy are close friends, but he is confused because he is young an feels more... he has feelings for his best friend, cares for him, loves him. His buddy touches his hand in the car, so his mind wanders to "what if?". So they go to that party... an he sees his friend go with a girl they knew. He feels envy as he watches the girl with his friend so now he's bummed out with confusion & anxiety over all this... but hes afraid to "come out" an tell him cuz he doesnt want to lose their friendship either. So he smokes that joint, starts feeling really uninhibited.... but goes outside for fresh air... his buddy comes to look for him, touches him and says like "hey what are u doing out here come back in to the party and have fun.." then because he is a little high an feeling uninhibited.... when his friend gives him what he misinterprets to be an "inviting smile"... he kisses him... but then the friend freaks out...in shock over this... pushes him away to the ground... an rejects him... friendship will never be the same again.... its gone... so at the end... the boy jumps out the window... this could be symbolic of saying he took his own life in some way... then they show his friend moving on without him... skating into the sunset... the sunset symbolizes the end of the day, the end of something... the end of the other boys life, the end of his friendship with this guy he always looked up to, who made him smile and laugh yet someone he could never have. Sadly, this story really does happen in real life to people all the time.

GunzDonovan thank you so much for this. I knew it was just about Sexual Rejection, but never knew that it was based on suicide as well

That happened to me with my high school teacher. Except he was married and obviously he was a teacher so that would never happen. It fucking hurts but yes that's a real fucked up situation in a lot of peoples lives. Envy, sorrow, jealousy, rejection, hurt. I have a loving boyfriend today though and although its not the same as what I felt towards that other man, it is just as beautiful.

the music and music video are orchestrated perfectly. His best friend didn't have the same feelings, and probably ended their relationship as friends. Really sad

This is just a blissful song to listen to and raises my vibrations, Ernest really has a gift with music and touching the core of ones being with his work, I can't believe I just found this yesterday, I am memorized and in utter tranquility. The video really captures the kneejerk feeling of rejection but the warrior motif of getting back up knowing theres better days ahead.

Wow this was a trip to revisit. I remember being in high school and Itunes really promoting the at the time upcoming album this song was from and just feeling this song in a special way and man this music video is one i'll never forget. This music video and Tyler Arron Glenns powerful coming out and his awesomely colorful music videos with neon trees from this time were the things that moved me that summer into the next phase of my life and i'm so glad for it. Sigh, I swear this decade is going by too fast haha

Hey I just want to point out that he definitely did not commit suicide in this video. He jumps out of a second story window onto a roof outside his bedroom. You can clearly see this at 2:42. He is young, healthy, he has a loving mother, a cute dog, a great place to live and he seems happy. He's just jumping out the window and sneaking out for the night. A lot of the commenters are seeing things that simply aren't there. Don't be so dramatic. People move on. Life goes on.
