Morning drive around downtown Washington DC, the capital of the USA.
Starting Point: goo.gl/maps/QYHbdLMNUrBRPAHTA .
Washington, DC, the U.S. capital, is a compact city on the Potomac River, bordering the states of Maryland and Virginia. It’s defined by imposing neoclassical monuments and buildings - including the iconic ones that house the federal government’s 3 branches: the Capitol, White House and Supreme Court. It's also home to iconic museums and performing-arts venues such as the Kennedy Center.
goo.gl/maps/JqQ5xBdAHRw1qwZG9
Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and also known as D.C. or just Washington, is the capital city of the United States of America. It is located on the Potomac River bordering Maryland and Virginia, with Congress holding its first session there in 1800. The city was named for George Washington, the first president of the United States and a Founding Father, and the federal district is named after Columbia, a female personification of the nation. As the seat of the U.S. federal government and several international organizations, the city is an important world political capital. It is one of the most visited cities in the U.S., with over 20 million visitors in 2016.
The three branches of the U.S. federal government are centered in the district: Congress (legislative), the president (executive), and the Supreme Court (judicial). Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 177 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profits, lobbying groups, and professional associations, including the World Bank Group, the International Monetary Fund, the Organization of American States, the AARP, the National Geographic Society, the Human Rights Campaign, the International Finance Corporation, and the American Red Cross.
The City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the national capital. In 1801, the land, formerly part of Maryland and Virginia (including the settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria), officially became recognized as the federal district. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia, including the city of Alexandria; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the district.
The city is divided into quadrants centered on the Capitol Building, and there are as many as 131 neighborhoods. The estimated population of 705,749 as of July 2019, makes it the 20th-most populous city in the U.S. and gives it a population larger than that of two U.S. states. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's daytime population to more than one million during the workweek. Washington's metropolitan area, the country's sixth-largest (including parts of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia), had a 2017 estimated population of 6.2 million residents.
A locally elected mayor and a 13-member council have governed the district since 1973. Congress maintains supreme authority over the city and may overturn local laws. D.C. residents elect a non-voting, at-large congressional delegate to the House of Representatives, but the district has no representation in the Senate. District voters choose three presidential electors in accordance with the Twenty-third Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1961.

I'm native-born to the city, lived here 70 years. This is the Best I've seen out of all the D.C. tour videos on here. 0:00 Pennsylvania Avenue eastbound, with Embassy of Canada on the left. This is the only foreign Embassy located right downtown. All other countries' embassies are "Uptown." National Gallery of Art, east wing, on right (Free admission). The east wing tends to have 20th century art, while the West wing has all the great European traditional masters. The buildings are connected by a pedestrian tunnel and cafe'. Notice the center Bicycle-lanes on Penn Ave, with protective bollards (bumps) to keep taxi-drivers from making U-turns. 0:14 John Paul Jones monument on Independence Avenue approaching Rock Creek Parkway. He was the "father of the U.S. Navy." :30 "Freedom Plaza" the site of many public events and protests. The city-hall "John Wilson" building on right. 1:07 "Old Post Office" building, converted into the "Trump Hotel." RIDE UP its bell-tower anytime, to see an outstanding panoramic view over the City. It's Free of charge. 1:22 F.B.I. headquarters building on left. It's considered ugly "brutalist style" design, unsuitable, and may be vacated / torn-down in a few years. Department of Justice on right. 1:40 National Archives building displays famous documents, and records of old Censuses and immigrant ship arrivals. 2:30 Federal Trade Commission on right. 2:40 The "Newseum" showcased the history of news reporting. It closed permanently in 2019 for lack of paying visitors. It couldn't compete with the many other local "Free" museums. 2:47 embassy of Canada is the only foreign embassy located right "downtown". All others are "uptown." 2:55 National Gallery of Art, West building has all the traditional great old European masters. Free admission. Their "garden court" also has free, chamber-music string concerts. We head north on 4th Street. 4:40 U.S. Department of Labor, 5:43 Holy Rosary Italian Church and Italian cultural center. Everyone there is Italian. 7:25 National Building Museum on left (showcases architecture). U.S. General Accounting Office on right. 7:45 Metro transit headquarters building (They may move out soon).. 8:00 Capital One Arena, home to the city's pro hockey and pro basketball teams. Many concerts and spectacles are also booked here. 8:15 the Wah Luck House high-rise houses elderly Chinese. Many Chinese restaurants line H-Street. 8:22 historic 6th street Synagogue. Many famous speakers come to lecture in their auditorium. 8:55 Walter E. Washington Convention Center on right. 9:15 Old Carnegie public library, closed in 1972 and later used for other things. 9:35 Tech World offices and Ramada Renaissance Hotel. 9:48 the large, International Youth Hostel is off to the right. 10:20 classic old "Art Deco" greyhound bus station, is now a furniture store. 10:35 National Museum of Women in the Arts, showcases all female artists. 11:00 International Monetary Fund, on left. N.Y. Ave. Presbyterian church at center. 11:40 Franklin Tower office building, and Franklin park. 12:00 Historic Franklin School, will reopen in 2021 as a "Museum of the Spoken Word." 12:50 McPherson Park on left, on K-street west. This very wide street has separate "service lanes" on each side. "K Street" is famous for legal firms and lobbying organizations. 13:00 old Southern Railway building on left. 13:05 Archibald's gentlemens-club in small red building on left. Presidential son, HUNTER BIDEN spends thousands of dollars here on "private stripper dances." This is a well-reported fact. 14:17 American Legion national headquarters, on left. 14:53 International Square office building and large food-court underground. 18:00 "Washington Circle" intersection near George Wash Univ. Hospital. 22:40 World Bank, on right. This organization lends money for development projects in many poor developing countries. Staff from many countries work here. 23:10 Renwick Art Gallery on left (part of Smithsonian), rotating exhibits showcase unusual handicrafts. 23:45 Old Executive Office Building in ornate Romanesque style, houses Presidential staff. In earlier times, it was called the "Main State and Navy" building. 24:00 Federal Deposit Insurance corporation, on left, insures all bank deposits. 24:10 Corcoran Gallery of Art (may be going out of business soon?), and School of Art. 24:20 Red Cross national headquarters, on right. Elizabeth Dole (Senator's wife) used to be their President. 24:33 Daughters of the American Revolution patriotic organization and "Constitution Hall" very large venue for concerts, programs, and graduations. 24:40 Organization of American States (Pan-American Union) promotes international harmony. 25:40 National World War II Memorial, on right is a favorite. 27:15 We cross the "Kutz bridge" eastbound on Independence Avenue. 28:10 Smithsonian African-American History Museum. 18:45 Department of Agriculture complex. Near here are also the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (prints money), and the National Holocaust Memorial Museum. We turn onto Jefferson Drive, eastbound. 29:15 Freer Gallery of Asian Art. 29:39 original Smithsonian "castle". 29:40 Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Free admission. Their Hall of Minerals has thousands of colorful minerals of all shapes and sizes from every corner of the world. The largest preserved elephant ever known in the world is in the main lobby. 29:50 Smithsonian Arts and Industries building. 30:00 Hirschhorn Gallery of Modern Art - unfortunately, named after the notorious drug-corporation family who are on trial for creating the Opioid (oxycontin) epidemic. 31:20 National Air and Space Museum - the world's busiest museum, second only to the Louvre gallery in France. Free admission. 32:15 Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian. Their cafeteria is quite unusual. 32:42 National Gallery of Art, east building- tends to have newer-style art. 35:00 Museum of Natural History. 35:25 Smithsonian Museum of American History. Free admission. 36:50 Smithsonian African-American History museum. 37:00 U.S. Department of Commerce, on left - Departmental Auditorium on right. 37:49 Ronald Reagan building and international trade center on right is the largest Federal building in the city, after the Pentagon. Its parking garage is very handy for tourists. 38:02 City Hall building. 38:15 Freedom plaza, on left. 38:22 Marriot Hotel, on right, historic Willard Hotel on left. 38:45 historic Hotel Washington. 39:10 Franklin Towers and Franklin park. 40:00 historic Franklin School - will reopen in 2021 as the "Museum of the Spoken Word." 43:50 Saint Patrick's, on the left - the oldest church in the Federal City. Former Woody's Department Store on right. 44:15 Ford's Theater on left, and "house where Lincoln died" on right. Ford's stage presents many plays dealing with American life and culture, as well as housing a museum downstairs about the assassination. 44:30 F.B.I. headquarters on left.

Wow you know a lot its amazing! Can you tell me how you lived there trough your life time? And what do you think of Washington dc itself
@slowerlane
@slowerlane 2 жыл бұрын
@@7summerbeauty The cost of living is very high costly in Washington DC, young people must share apartments (flats) with roommates. The road traffic (circulation) in the region is extremely busy - terrible. But there are many free-of-charge Museums, and the green parklands on the river shore are beautiful. Very highly educated population. Recently the metro subway system has problems, is unreliable. I am retired (pensioner) and I now live 60 km away in a smaller town. I am a member of Facebook and Quora..

You have confused the Hirshhorn for the Sackler family. Joseph Hirshhorn was a prolific art collector who donated most of his art collection to create the Hirshhorn. He actually studied art and had nothing to do with opioids. Arthur Sackler made his fortune marketing pharmaceuticals. He donated some art to what became the Sackler/Freer Gallery. Also, it is called the Eisenhower Executive Office Building now. It has been since some time in the 90s.

I always wondered why D.C was the capital and I always thought this city was nothing compared to cities like NYC and Chicago which had skyscrapers and looked more glamorous. I was totally wrong. Seeing D.C with my own eyes made me realize it is the most elegant city in the US. It doesn't have big sky scrapers but the buildings are almost regal in appearance like it was made for someone in the Monarchy. Truly fit to be called the capital.
