Washington Island, WI: North of the Tension Line

I came to Washington Island way back in 1965. I was just five years old. We came up to visit some folks my parents met when my dad bought our first boat and he joined a US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla in Ohio.. The people's last name was the Joeburgs. I remember that there was a "Potato Boat" moored in the harbor. I found from doing some reading that this must have been the last of such boats, and it left two years later in 1967. I "rediscovered" Washington Island as I have been doing initial planning and researching to do a Great Loop trip, with a stop on the island. I've been watching all these great films on KZbin about Door County and the Island but I think I am going to plan a visit before I do the Loop, with a trip all the way from Florida in summer 2024. This place is gorgeous and fascinates me.

Have made the trip a few times now. First time was just with bicycles. Very nice excursion, though the bicycles were a bit ambitious for our family. (Especially since some roads have no shoulder.). Loved the history and the friendliness of all the folks, the shopping, and the beautiful scenery. Looking forward to the next trip, where we hope to include Rock Island.
