My husband was diagnosed with vascular dementia (the 2nd cause of dementia after Alzheimer) in 2016. His decline started after he got bedridden on December 23, 2017, his brain just stopped sending the signals for his legs to move. In June 2018 he already had pressure ulcers. He got confused and started calling me by his sister’s name or he would ask me how much I was getting paid for his care, like I was a private nurse taking care of him. Other times he knew my name and that I was his wife. In August 2018 he got hospitalized because his ulcers were necrotic, from there he was in and out of the hospital due to bacterial and urinary tract infections. He died on January 17, 2019 due to a sepsis, renal failure, he got blind and couldn't speak anymore. Even at the moment of his death he knew I was his wife. But since he got bedridden, I felt like I had lost my husband because my life was never the same. I wasn’t expecting him to get better. I knew it was going to be an inevitable health decline and death because that was part of this brain condition or disease. I used to tell my son “wow I am a widow with a living husband.” He was living but he wasn’t aware of everyday things like normal people, that was part of the dementia. So, I don’t agree with Dan Gasby’s decision, but I guess that everyone deals with dementia in different ways. I chose to take care of my husband until he died. I was there for him.

For her husband to capitalize off B Smith’s illness by moving his mistress into their home, bragging about it, then showing video clips of B Smith with Alzheimers is upsetting to me. There is no one to rescue her because she didn’t have children nor siblings. For him to do this is so tacky and tasteless. My heart aches for B Smith and I’m praying for her for some type of intervention with professional care. My friend’s mom died of cancer two years ago. Her parents were married for over 50 years and he took care of her until her last breath. He wouldn’t let anyone other than family or medical professionals touch her. He waited on her hand and foot. Many times she couldn’t speak or move. She seemed gone... but he took care of her. She went into hospice and he had a bed put in her room so he can stay by her side. It was beautiful... he loved her so much.

I think this is horrible, and my heart breaks for B. Smith. My father had lung cancer that metastasized to his brain. I moved in to help my mother care for him, along with visits from his hospice nurse. His personality completely changed. He became very easily irritated and distant. He eventually stopped recognizing us for the most part, but a small part of him still recognized my mom. He would grab her hand and hold on and look at her, like he knew she was someone important to him but he just couldn't quite figure it out. At the very end, he couldn't speak at all. It was a terribly difficult time and it certainly took its toll on my mother, but she didn't "find another love" like this man did. 52 years together, and she was literally there with him when he took his last breath. Apparently some people think in sickness and in health only applies if their spouse never gets anything worse than a bad case of the flu. It's bad enough that he felt the need to do this in the first place, but what purpose does it serve to publicize his relationship while his wife is still alive?

I believe Mrs. Smith had early onset dementia. My sister was also diagnosed with early onset dementia. I first noticed symptoms around 2009. That's thirteen years ago. Now she is in late stages. I visited with her a coupke weeks ago. It was the first time she did not recognize me. She is relatively happy and well taken care of. I hope that Mrs. Smith was also happy and well taken care of. When they get money or have a successful career, having a white or non-black partner is a reflection of that success. Black women are usually expected to be space fillers until the man has the ability to get what he perceives is better.

This is bs. Many of us have been caretakers at various points in our lives. I watched my Dad take care of my Mom who was suffering from cancer for three years. He was by her side (sans girlfriend) the entire time. He was tired. He was sad. It was difficult. But he honored those vows! If Dan needs love and affections so much, then he has two options: DIVORCE B. I was a caregiver for my mother who presented with Alzheimer's. It is a very hard and lonely Journey. I gave up my life as a single woman to care for her. I think this man is hurting, lonely and confused. I understand him wanting companionship because the journey is so lonely and hard. But he should have waited until his wife passed away and the girlfriend should not have been in the wife's house. I think her presence in the house is very disrespectful.

Amen! The situation doesn't say much for the mistress either. She leeched on another successful black man who was also blinded by her white. He's a successful restauranteur in NYC. She snifted around him until he was arrested for whatever and put in jail for a year or so. When he got out she was nowhere to be found. She's opportunistic. My dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2005 when he was about 78. My mother had retired from nursing to take care of him until he passed away, aged 86 on 12/27/13. She NEVER left my dad’s side when he no longer could care for himself. In fact, she loved him until the end. She never had anybody else to take care of him except me, my husband and my children. I miss my dad then, and I miss him now. I just wished I could have done more. My heart goes out to B. Smith and family.
