There have been a few discussions on this topic regarding the Wassell WW10221N electronic voltage regulator that replaces the old Lucas mechanical unit for old bikes. Mostly the subject is about the confusing wiring diagram that was incorrectly drawn, and the fact that the units dont seem to work for most people that have tried fitting them. and also the need to rewire the internal dynamo connections. I say "most" people, because the successfull ones havent said anything about the experience online, although some have commented on the diagrams in the instructions not being correct, or not being very clear. I bought my unit some months ago, before reading all the bad feedback on them. No it didn't work for me either, but when I re fitted my mechanical Lucas reg, it started working, so I kept using it and didn't bother sending back the "crap" Wassell solid state unit because I had cut all the leads down and it had bits of solder on it. Well my old regulator finally decided to die on me, so out comes the Wassel unit and armed with a few hints and tips I read online, I decided to re fit it. After messing with the dynamo connections once more, it still didn't seem to work at all. The first thing I did before I ripped it out again, was to put the dynamo connections back the way they were originally. I thought "What the heck" just try it and see what happens before I buy a better make of solid state regulator. It showed good ampage from the moment the engine started, and with a charged battery it shows a steady gentle charge with the lights on at road speeds. I still wont recommend these units, but at least it works after all the messing around I've had. UPDATE After trying this unit for a couple of evenings, it seems that it is crap after all. The charge rate is sky high at around 50mph, untill I turn on the lights. Then the charge balances nicely, but it really isn't practical to go no slower than 50 everywhere. The battery I have is also a problem. Being easily hidden in the dummy battery case is all well and good, but the capacity of 4ah means that it wont power the lights for more than a few minutes in town at slower speeds. Next up is another small bettery to fit in the dummy case, doubling the capacity to 8ah, and some led bulbs. If the Wassell still doesn't do it's job, then it's in the junk pile and I'll by a better unit. UPDATE ON THE UPDATE Yes the Wassel works better with a bigger battery, but still doesnt keep the battery topped up when riding around town at lower speeds. If you commute along a dual carrageway for a few miles or some faster A and B roads, you should be fine, but dont count on it when you need it most. I wired mine as per instructions and like you, it didn't work. reversed the wiring and yes it then did work but not very well. Just about kept up with load (coil ignition) but useless when the light were turned on, not only that the light "flicker" , the rear light especially. Like you I wish I had read some of the online comments beforehand.

I can recommend the dvr2 from Paul Goff and a set of led bulbs. I put the dvr video up on here somewhere. It's just crazy that Wassell are happy to carry on selling stuff that doesn't work.

@@thra5herxb12s Thank you Dean. I have been trying to use the devise with a Bosch dynamo which as it happens is already internally wired the way Wassell say, (i.e. with the control in the earth (frame) end of the field). Rewiring to the conform to the Lucas set up as I said sort of works but basically useless. Should have bought a dvr2 in the first place.

Bought 2 units. Cannot power lights at commuting speed say 30mph. Keeps battery charged at commuting speed . Not properly engineered. What is the max field current on these units.? Poor technical information. Wassel do not reply to queries.

These are absolute garbage and dont work properly. Lots of information about them online and none of it good. I got the DVR2 now and it's been trouble free for the past year and 10,000 miles of riding.
