There have been a few discussions on this topic regarding the Wassell WW10221N electronic voltage regulator that replaces the old Lucas mechanical unit for old bikes. Mostly the subject is about the confusing wiring diagram that was incorrectly drawn, and the fact that the units dont seem to work for most people that have tried fitting them. and also the need to rewire the internal dynamo connections. I say "most" people, because the successfull ones havent said anything about the experience online, although some have commented on the diagrams in the instructions not being correct, or not being very clear. I bought my unit some months ago, before reading all the bad feedback on them. No it didn't work for me either, but when I re fitted my mechanical Lucas reg, it started working, so I kept using it and didn't bother sending back the "crap" Wassell solid state unit because I had cut all the leads down and it had bits of solder on it. Well my old regulator finally decided to die on me, so out comes the Wassel unit and armed with a few hints and tips I read online, I decided to re fit it. After messing with the dynamo connections once more, it still didn't seem to work at all. The first thing I did before I ripped it out again, was to put the dynamo connections back the way they were originally. I thought "What the heck" just try it and see what happens before I buy a better make of solid state regulator. It showed good ampage from the moment the engine started, and with a charged battery it shows a steady gentle charge with the lights on at road speeds. I still wont recommend these units, but at least it works after all the messing around I've had. UPDATE After trying this unit for a couple of evenings, it seems that it is crap after all. The charge rate is sky high at around 50mph, untill I turn on the lights. Then the charge balances nicely, but it really isn't practical to go no slower than 50 everywhere. The battery I have is also a problem. Being easily hidden in the dummy battery case is all well and good, but the capacity of 4ah means that it wont power the lights for more than a few minutes in town at slower speeds. Next up is another small bettery to fit in the dummy case, doubling the capacity to 8ah, and some led bulbs. If the Wassell still doesn't do it's job, then it's in the junk pile and I'll by a better unit. UPDATE ON THE UPDATE Yes the Wassel works better with a bigger battery, but still doesnt keep the battery topped up when riding around town at lower speeds. If you commute along a dual carrageway for a few miles or some faster A and B roads, you should be fine, but dont count on it when you need it most.
