I live in Western Canada and our municipality has the most amazing event. Every year we have “Spring Cleanup Day” when people are allowed to put extra “garbage” and large items out in a pile at the curb. The weekend before people put out furniture, decor, building supplies, plant pots, etc. that they want to get rid of. Residents then can drive around and take whatever they want from the piles. We jokingly call it “Redneck Christmas”. Anything that is left gets picked up by a series of city recycling and garbage trucks. It offers a fun and sustainable way to deal with the excess stuff that tends to accumulate. My two favourite finds are an antique Asian wooden rice bucket and a vintage portable mimeograph machine. My friend found a vintage Apollo 860 Domed Stereo on stand with matching speakers. It is the BEST! More places should do it.

I'm jealous! Much more organized and efficient than dumpster diving stuff or just watching for stuff left on curbs.

@ it is so fun! In addition to being practical and useful it builds a sense of community because people get into the spirit of it and enjoy the hunt. You also see kids come home carrying things like an old basketball hoop or something random that they are very excited about. It’s nice that things are saved from the landfill. There is a man who collects some of the bikes. He fixes them up and then donates them to charity ❤

As someone who in 2023, really wanted to get off social media and back to books, I offer one tip: start with a murder mystery or some other type of "page turner." My gateway book was "Girl on a Train" by Paula Hawkins. I couldn't put it down and by the summer I was back to more serious literature. Good luck!

I second this!! Every time I find myself in a reading slump, I pick up a suspense book. I find I need to remind myself that reading is a form of entertainment and pleasure. It doesn't have to be sophisticated all the time (or at all). Also, a book club has been the true secret to maintaining a long term reading habit.

ah that poster is from the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, which is a great museum. It used to contain very, very beautiful objects from antiquity. The lay out is very cool as it feels like you are walking through old buildings of antiquity. But sadly it was closed in 2023 for at least 20 years so they can complete extensive renovations. Very German time frame (I have lived here for 15 years and feel I am allowed to say that). The sculptor Rainer Kriester was a German artist (born in the 1935)- and seems to have held an exhibition in the space in 2000. He died 2 years later. Interesting to learn about it and him through this video!

Great finds and the neat thing is that there's still plenty out there to be found. I have a method of thrifting of going to the furniture area first then frames and then lamps and bric-a-brac. It really takes a good eye and knowledge of design and patina. I like finding good wood frames with linen liners and preferably the Hecho Mexico because I do modernist paintings that work well with them. The best thrifted find was a Made in Denmark 1960's credenza made of teak. The price was only $15.00 because in was in need of a refinish and had some big cardboard panel stapled to the back that was very old and faded green which turned out to be just a protector back piece to protect the solid wood back when it was originally shipped that the owners had never removed The back was indent stamped with the words "Made in Denmark" into the teak. It turned out it's worth over $1,000.00. I gave it to my daughter after it was all cleaned up. The other two things were a pair of Eero Saarinen executive chairs and original that I found in of all places in a car exhaust welding repair shop that mechanics had been sitting on the last fifty some years. I made an offer to the owner of $100.00 each and he sold them to me!

Video idea: I would love to see a series about the psychology of how our homes make us feel. For example, how does having a lack of intimate spaces (open concepts rather than smaller rooms) affect our relationship with the space and with our roommates? Does it lead us to feel suffocated from the lack of privacy? A Mina Le sort of video essay would be lovely :)

In the 70s and up to the mid 80s brass was very IN. There were brass beds (often featured on “Love American Style”) large brass planters, and brass trunks that many people used as coffee tables. I’ve always loved the trunks. They’re pretty rare now and usually SO expensive. I thought I’d probably never own one. I recently found a *perfect* vintage 1970s brass trunk in pristine condition. The seller was only the 2nd owner and just a few miles away. She was selling it for next to nothing; I jumped on it immediately!

The cute corner trashcan looks like something you can easily make yourself (or have it made). I used to see these holders for cone filters--you hang it on the wall and it's like a pocket to store your cone filters. There's ceramic ones, wooden ones, etc. I worked very hard making one for myself--I used thin sheets of balsa wood and had to cut it out w a utility knife, glue the pocket on the front, sand the handle to the right shape, etc. Then I painted it. It looks really good, but now we don't use cone filters anymore--wah wah.
