Waste Management Peterbilt 520 / Mid-Size Amrep ASL Garbage Truck

Here is one of WM/GI's newest additions to their fleet - 1 of 3 brand new Peterbilt 520s with custom ordered mid-size Amrep ASL bodies. 106230 is seen here collecting trash in Topanga on a hot and sunny summer afternoon. Cool thing about these trucks is that despite their smaller size, they are powered by a Cummins ISX rather than the other less powerful engine they use for the other baby trucks (L9N I believe?) A more powerful engine is without a doubt a necessity up on the steep and narrow roads in the Santa Monica Mountains.
These units are "replacements" for the MR Amrep Octos that GI is known for, but I think they still run as spares occasionally.

WM is smart for getting the 520 with those mirrors. They can easily replace them with older model mirrors as opposed to the ugly plastic ones.

These seem like nice noble little trucks, should fit their purpose well, and have a decent load size at the same time. Kinda interesting to see that they just used a tailgate sticker set on the side instead of a smaller think clean one. I also like that they didn’t do a instant rollout of new carts, I bet some of those Universal carts will survive up there for years and years to come. Nice work on this video, I know it can’t be easy trekking up and down those mountains!

Thanks for the comment! A nice change not having the usual uniform WM think clean on the side of the truck. This area has got to be one of the hardest and worst places to film, and on top of 90 degree weather it sure wasn't a piece of cake!

These came out nice! Definitely a solid replacement for the frontline trucks up there. Seems like there's still a fair amount of green up there despite the fires last year. Can't believe a RecycLA cart managed to get up there lmao. Been seeing those in several other yards lately. Great video!

Thank you! I agree! Topanga actually wasn't hit by the fires - in fact it was a good 10 or so miles from where the worst happened. The area is still very dense and green and hopefully stays that way for a long time! I saw a good few of those black RecycLA carts as a matter of fact. Certainly interesting.

Great video! Been wanting to see one of these for a while now. They sure do look sharp, although they are a little bit on the slower side. I wish they were fast idle, but nonetheless it was fun to watch. Interesting to see all the UWS bins on pretty much the whole route, I would love to see a roll out happen soon haha. Great post bro!

@@SCSITerminator You are absolutely right. Though some places (ex Recology Sonoma Marin) have bought entire fleets of new diesel trucks, CARB has regulated and filtered them beyond belief.

Nice video! I'm surprised they didn't put the Think Clean Think Green logo on the truck. I'm assuming all 3 new minis do the 3 streams up here but do these run anywhere else?

zp12684 thank you! Yeah, the routes are super confusing up here but I do believe each one is assigned to a stream. These trucks are only used in the Mountains Monday, Wednesday and Thursday so I’m not sure what they do the other days.

West Valley Refuse thanks! Universal Waste had a contract up here until April of 2018, and so WM kept all the UWS cans and are replacing them with new WM cans on an on-call basis.
