i wish they had discussed the economics of recycling. In my community in Texas, everyone has to pay a premium for recycling even though only a minority of us actually recycle. What will it take for the value of materials recovered to cover the cost? Also, our waste company has to run two trucks each trash day, so I suspect that second truck does more environmental damage than the environmental good of recovering raw materials.

Most people employed at our big recycle plant are half-way house criminals. At least the ones on the separating line. Landfills could be almost non-existent if we recycled more. The leftovers could be incinerated in a non toxic furnace. Energy would be made, fewer landfill tonnage.

Neat video. Waste Management is an awesome company. They don't just do trash. They actually provide energy for millions of homes as well. There is a lot more to trash removal than people realize. The common perception is that you just bring it to the curb and it "disappears", but there is actually a whole world of technology behind it.

As an American who has lived abroad in Japan, it makes me really sad to see how much work people have to do just because we are so lazy and nonchalant about separating out own recycling. I'm glad there is a way to sort it all out, but I wish people cared more and understood the processes that are created and carried out for their own benefit each and every day.

Waste Managment needs to hire on people. At my facility we got a 5 to 3 ratio of temps to company employees working. I been working at my MRF for 1.5 years and am STILL a temp. A coworker of mine, 2.5ish years. Still a temp. She also makes a quarter above minumum wage, the same as the rest of us. Its not fair, but I work hard for it. Got promoted to foreman over a month ago. And our bails are below 95% purity. That part made me laugh, haha.

Sure would be nice if Waste Management would walk their talk here in Yamhill County, Oregon. But dumping unsorted garbage at the Riverbend Landfill on the banks of the Yamhill River is definitely a money maker. Waste Management just received permission from commissioners George and Springer to expand the huge dump in the middle of the Willamette Valley. No worry about capturing recyclable materials, just drive up and dump all your unsorted garbage. A huge money maker for corporate stockholders.

I even use an iPhone app called "unused" by lokesh which helps me track all my items in my home per different categories like electronics etc and then helps me to sell it or give it to charity etc. it even tells me how much money i made using unused items. waste is not just plastic etc, even unused things! Hi, I've read many people over in the States are paid poorly,it saddens me as you good folk are very patriotic,you fight for a cause yet there are so many people unemployed and homeless. The US has to compete with China yet your wages are low too so who is making the money? big business and the white collar sector. There is a division now between the reral workers as we see here in this vid and those behind the scenes getting paid huge salaries for for doing very little,I don't understand why.

Or how about address the issue at home, thus reducing the effort of classifying "waste" objects into either functionality or chemical content? I.e. give consumer an incentive to recycle, make it easier to classify their recycle "waste"? I mean you only have metal, paper, plastic, glass. Metal and glass is rarer than paper and plastic. It doesn't have to be perfect. These materials are not pure in the beginning, nor are re -use because the materials need to be pure.

I work at WM, and it is a nightmare. They pay pretty good and have decent benefits, but the flip side is they are the worst company in America to work for. They monitor you with camera's in the truck and at the facilities. If they see you so much as take your eyes off the road for a second, you get 3 days off without pay. Managers will treat you like you are incompetent despite the fact that they have no idea how to do the job themselves. You work long hours, the equipment they have is outdated, broken, and violating multiple DOT and environmental laws. Very few trucks have A/C and you are EXPECTED to work overtime, no choice in the matter. The managers will reprimand you if you go slow and try to be safe. But if you get in an accident or something malfunctions on the truck, then you will be stabbed in the back by the same managers and given 3 days off with no pay. There is a lot more I could tell you, but honestly, WM will probably punish me just for saying what I wrote here. But if you don't believe me, just stop you local WM trash driver and ask him.

One day all garbage will be recycled, I'm sure you are already looking into methods and machines, what about the giant turbines that grind up all the waste then use it as a source of clean energy? The problem with that is you've gotta keep buying those Smoke Stack filters, the ideal would be for WM to own the production of the filters and to then buy them at or below cost. 100% reuse of all waste materials is here, it just hasn't been fully implemented. Great job on the 1 stream Recycling!

What I would do is to take the organic waste and use it as compost for my plants... just as simply trow the peel of my bananas and place them there. I guess :)
@DavidKlausa
@DavidKlausa 9 жыл бұрын
Alejandro Salazar Desgraciadamente, most places in the USA don't have any organic waste plan, so either individuals compost it themselves or it goes to a landfill. And NO! The best option is never Single Stream. The more you sort your recycling, the more efficient the process is. For example, in my city, glass in single stream is crushed and used as "ADC" in the landfill, whereas glass separated and taken to a recycling facility is remade into bottles. And to avoid food/liquid contamination, all containers should be empty and rinsed.

I think programs such as single-stream recycling are making great strides in helping the environment. The average person does not have the time or concern to sort all of their waste products. By having a system that sorts for the 'average Joe' is such a great idea. I find the process very clever as well. I wonder if there is a process that can be done to pay recyclers for multiple types of materials the way they pay you for bringing in cans and bottles individually. I am sure that the waste management businesses make a lot of money without having to pay people for their contribution with the single-stream process.
