Basically, as a Korean, I want to say there are some reasons and factors why a great portion of South Korean people were destined to be pro-USA and pro-west. South Korea is fundamentally pro-American, and that's because South Korea (to be more precise, southern part of Korean peninsula) was heavily influenced by the United States in a matter of politics. First of all, after being independent from Japan in 1945, United States troops occupied the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, before they let South Korea to be their own country in 1948. While ignoring Korea's geopolitical importance, the United States excluded South Korea from the Acheson Line. (it's simply the strategic border to unconditionally protect the nation from non-USA powers) North Korea, at the meantime, was planning to invade South Korea and take control of the entire Korean peninsula, which was actually executed at dawn on June 25, 1950 . The United States hurriedly dispatched its main weapons and troops, which had already been retreated to Japan, to South Korea in order to fight against the North Korean and Chinese forces. Of course, the real intention of the United States to fight for South Korea was to suppress the expansion of communist forces that were trying to shake the world hegemony of the United States, but South Koreans often think of this like "the United States defended Korea's sovereignty and democracy." That's why there are many people who say that the United States fought for Korea and have the mindset of being thankful and even think that they owe the country for "liberating" them from socialist/communist invasion. As South Korea getting drastically developed after the war under the anti-communist regime, the soft power of the United States came to have a lot of influence in the nation over the time, which allegedly enriched ordinary South Korean people's lives, culturally and economically. (For example, English education/Hollywood movies/a bunch of American products and brands, etc.) At the same time, South Korean people have seen through the media of North Korea slowly becoming a dictatorship nation that destroyed human rights and made their people suffer the worst poverty caused by the lack of ability of leaders and the desire for power. South Korean people finds the reason of it from the northern counterpart joining hands with countries such as China and the Soviet Union, so the side effects of socialism were inherited and the country became poor. That's why Koreans think it's the excellent diplomatic insight of the founding fathers who chose a pro-US route as a factor in economic growth and enrichment. Thus, South Korean people are generally in favor of the United States, and against anti-USA nations such as North Korea and China. Of course, in the international political environment where constant change and variables are made, I personally think it is not healthy to have an international view that blindly follows only one side, such as the Western powers. However, judging from all the factors, it is realistically very difficult to get rid of the Western-first principle embedded in the minds of Koreans.

America is no longer what it once was. The great number of Americans (the majority of the young generation) are pro-socialism and pro-communism. The very same people burn American flag and bible in mass protests. Most politicians are pro-socialism and pro-China. One thing that is working for Koreans is that there's a constant reminder of evil effects of communism.
