I think the unsheathed katana is a display piece thing. The kind of person who does that either has no intention of ever using the sword, or doesn't know that's bad and thinks it'll be fine. I love the relieved "okay, we're a chicken."

I really wish gaming as an industry, designers and developers in particular, had a bigger union and worker's rights focus, not only for the good it would do or for the balancing it would do against those industries like VA that do have that culture that interact with gaming, but because it would mean we would be more likely to have a varied body of indie work on the subject to compare and contrast deeply absurdist/dadaist efforts like Oikospiel Book against, rather than it just being this weird, completely left field thing that makes no sense not only deliberately, but because the context it's trying to draw on is unknown to so many people. Which is kind of like expressing a frustration that "this game is deep and you just don't get it" but leans more toward "this game isn't actually that deep, but there's also no real reason (given what it's about) that you'd be expected to get it and I want that to change"

The discussion on pretentiousness versus absurdity is probably part of what Oikospiel is trying to instil. A lot of the power of absurdism and dadaism was just how angry it made people, for reasons they themselves often did not understand. Personally, I would say art without pretentiousness is decor, really.

Is the sideways curtain a thing? Like is there a culture in Russia that hangs them that way? I'll admit it's an interesting way to get a different look out of them.

The Last Hope has no hope. Even the sequel advertised on the start screen shows a lack of stakes-raising. Alex should totally play it. Oikospiel Book looks absolutely fascinating. It's not really a game, as it lacks objectives, but is more of a interactive narrative, like visual novels. It isn't pretentious, but rather a venue unexplored. The Stanley Parable is similar, but has branching story paths, and more coherent.

I mean the fact that Oikospiel had a point, and a story, and themes, probably helped albeit they were oft obscured by the absurdist presentation. Even so, it wasn't exactly subtle with its themes of the wealthy and the institutions that support them (like the police) being corrupt and undeserving, but those are still valid and important ideas to explore.

Gives you a sword and shield but has no combat mechanics at all. Has survival meters but just scatters food and drink randomly along the only path. There is nothing to do but run and run for ages until the level just stops. Even if you're new to game design, you presumably have actually played a videogame before in your life.

For Oikospiel to be pretentious, it would have to have been actively insulting and belittling its audience for "not getting it". It very clearly is not doing for that, it's revelling in its own absurdity and taking everyone else along the ride.

Oikospiel Book is modernism vs. post modernism
@colinbeck86767 жыл бұрын
Okay I'm not sure anyone mentioned it or got it, but I'm pretty sure Oikospiel is a modern, video game rendition, if an absolutely ABSURD and dadaist rendition, of the classic Orphean operas, that tells the tale of Orpheus, the great musician of greek myth, portrayed here by the crystal bear, journeying through the underworld to rescue his wife Eurydice, played here by the crystal wolf, who has died and her soul cast into Hades. Obviously, they're trying to tie it into some sort of socialist commentary on unions, art production (with the dog game studio), and absurdism, as the conflict between the bear (Orpheus) and the wolf (Eurydice) is about the unionization of the game studio. I think the underworld that Orpheus tries to rescue Eurydice from is the neo-liberal socialist game studio she works for that is going out of business because they aren't delivering what their donors wanted because it's too absurd, and Eurydice is having none of it and criticizing Orpheus for being a bigwig and having servants. And through all of it is this meta-analysis and self-critique as the game itself is what the studio inside the game is developing. Overall, yeah, it's absolutely off the wall. But it isn't just some weird shitpost, it does actually have a .... well, not coherent, but solid storyline that is meaningful and classic. This is art at its ... art-ist. Can't say best, certainly not worst, weird is derogatory, so... art-ist.
