My name is Mr. Chao and welcome to Chao Time. I’m back with yet another Grand Seiko, but this time, a Spring Drive!!! This is the SBGE257, which is from their sport collection. As such, it has a bit of lume, and feels a bit like a slightly more robust Snowflake.
In order to buy the next watch to review, I need to sell the watches I buy to review. Below in the description, you’ll find my instagram with watches I’m trying to sell. The way I review watches is by objectively scoring them against a rubric to get a total score. I then take the score and apply a value multiplier to get a value score. Then, I rank the two scores against all the other watches I have reviewed up to that point. After the review, I give a completely subjective opinion which takes into consideration everything that goes into buying a watch.
Before we can begin scoring the watch against the rubric, we first need to understand the purpose of the watch and what design language inspires it. Well, it’s a value oriented dive watch, which places it as both a sports and tool watch.

I own this watch and bought it for 400 bucks. Ok, I'm opening myself up here to criticism, but I believe this watch will become a classic collectible in the same tradition of the Seiko skx. I adore this watch.

It's definitely a wonderful watch. Not outside the realm of possibility that Orient becomes the enthusiast's darling brand, but they would need to up their game a bit. There's quite a bit of competition in the microbrand space.

I have one and would say the lume is incredibly awesome. The two negative for me are - the bulky and unrefined bezel design. It protrudes higher than the glass and the numbers printed on it are big and cheap looking. Because of this it is a good watch that could have been great. And eliminating the embossing on the underside would have reduced the height by 1mm.

I have one in black. The bracelet is terrible thank you strap code. But the lume is amazing. Lasts just as long or longer than sieko divers. For under 400 this watch can't be beat.

I can't decide what to put it on. I haven't tried strapcode, just some other aftermarket bracelets and natos.

@@1968jpy oh man, that's so funny. I'm planning on getting that next. There are so many Seikos that I want to try out though. Someone is offering a samurai for my blumo, so that might be the next seiko review. Wish me luck on the baby tuna!

You have to get the jubilee bracelet. It changed mine completely. The one it comes with is terrible

I typically wear mine on a NATO. The stock bracelet is not the best. Did you get an aftermarket? What brand?

Great review, keep'm coming.. Unfortunately mine like others had a wobbly crown from new and within a year, broke off it's pinion . As Orient don't have a agent in Australia, I decided to have it repaired by a local watch maker with a "TAG" crown and pinion. Hopefully it lasts longer than the original crown as i really like the look of this watch....

Thanks! I hope to start making new reviews in the next few weeks. I just moved to a different country and getting settled in is hard (code for I'm lazy). That's awesome that TAG parts fit. I didn't know crowns were standardized like that.

The crown of my orient watch is very difficult to close, is this normal?

I have this version in black and blue with a jubilee strapcode in both. I also have the seiko blumo with a president strapcode. I have a samurai seiko with a hexagon strapcode, I mean that all are good watches but can only use one at a time😁

I hope to get a samurai in to review at some point. The next seiko diver will probably be a turtle. I really want to try the hexagon bracelet. How do you like it?

@@metralhamor46 you've got some great watches there! I agree, Seiko bracelets leave a lot to be desired. I want to get one of those new save the oceans monsters with the penguin footprint. I've also been meaning to look at some citizen divers and eco drive chronographs.

@@ChaoTime101 I don't own this watch but in the market for one. Some of the reviews I've seen stated that the crown head/crown shaft were particular weak points (e.g. thin crown shaft prone to breakage). Glad to hear your Triton doesn't have that issue, perhaps it was only a small batch of affected units?

@@hansevin169 perhaps. I just read up on the issue. I'm generally pretty gentle in crowns because the metal is pretty thin on any watch. Good to know it's especially thin on these!

I've had my Triton/Neptune for three years and zero issues with the crown or crown action at all. Super smooth. And, I bought it used. The previous owner had it two years. It hasn't been serviced yet and isn't showing any signs of needing servicing soon after 5+ years since it was built. Excellent watch.
