Watch Riz La Teef mix his most prized dubplates

Following dubplate sessions with Spooky, Slimzee and Kahn & Neek, we decided we had to check out the formidable collection of vinyl purist Riz La Teef.
Riz started DJing at 18, when his flatmate went overseas for a month and left his low-tech belt drive turntables out in the open. He now cuts his own dubplates at London’s Transition Mastering and Music House every week, seeking out the best instrumentals and vocals from MCs like Riko Dan, AJ Tracey and Lady Chann to play in the club and on his Radar Radio show.
Riz is a real dubplate taste-maker if there ever was one, and above you can watch him mix his most prized dubplates from the basement of Radar’s London HQ. The 17 minute mix features a bunch of exclusive cuts, including a Sinjin Hawke’s remix of Scratcha DVA featuring Killa P, a heavy ‘I Luv U’ refix by Boylan, and Riko Dan spitting over a UK funky classic.

Wait. So he asks the artists and producers for the digital files of songs and then produces vinyls of them?

masenz So he asks an artist to spit lyrics over an instrumental tune then has that cut to vinyl or acetate. The artist has written lyrics specifically for Riz, hence the shouts, and then he’s put those lyrics over an instrumental and had that cut. It’s essentially an exclusive version of that tune which no one will ever be able to purchase. To clarify, the artist who is singing is not the same person who produced the tune. So Riz isn’t just cutting dubs of songs that already exist, he’s making exclusive versions using lyrics from one person and putting them over another person’s instrumental tune. Hope that explanation makes sense.
