Apparently birds' brain structure is quite dense and efficient. Hence you have some, like crows, that can be very intelligent. Certainly I'd expect birds to have some memory of "good" and "bad" things like foods or animals or people they encounter as part of their survival mechanisms. But what I've read about crows and related (corvids) is quite amazing, in terms of memory and problem solving skills.

I did something as a child.. maybe 8 or 9.. we had an above ground swimming pool, and there were usually a few drowned bugs floating that you had to scoop out before you went swimming.. One day, there was about a dozen black and yellow bees.. not sure what kind.. I thought they would be great for school.. I got a piece of cardboard and covered it with tin foil.. then took each bee and lined them up by size.. Then I got some straight pins from my mom's sewing stuff.. and I stuck pin through the smallest bee and then into the cardboard.. so the bee was suspended about half an inch above the foil.. I had a couple rows of bees and was proud of my project.. I left it outside on the picnic table.. when my mom got home, I went out to get it, to show her, and to my horror, half the bees were alive and buzzing, wings vibrating, legs moving.. I was stunned, sickened, almost.. and I couldn't believe I was responsible .. I honestly don't remember what I did next, but to this day I cant even touch a dead or dying creature

For anyone who finds a hummingbird like this. The recipe is 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. First boil the water, remember to account for evaporation. After boiling the water, shut off the flame and mix the sugar. Stir well so all the sugar dissolves. Once the sugar dissolves let the water cool and reach room temp. Once cooled you can let the hummingbird have it. If you have a syringe like this person did that works. Just brace it against something so it's more stable. You don't need to put the birds entire beck in the tip. Just bring it close, it's tongue can do the rest.

I saved a hummingbird that couldn't fly and was trapped in the limestone dust of a parking lot. I captured him with my bare hands and took him home and nursed him for four hours then when he could fly, I released him. As he flew away I told him to visit soon. The next year and for the following 12 years, we have had swarms of hummers to the point that one feeder wasn't enough. We put up the "race track", seven feeders that wrapped around our tiny house and love every one that visits. I was born able to relate to wild animals. My first saved wild creature was a white duck from a pond where my father was buried. I was four. I am almost sixty now and am unable to continue due to health issues but every day I think about the animals I saved, the ones I lost and the inspiration to others to do the selfless act of caring for what can't take care of itself. Suddenly a hummingbird swooped in and started to dart in and out around the water as it came out. Then he moved in close and hovered so that he could drink directly from one of the gentle streams. I froze and let him drink until he was done at which point he took off. It was magical!

This honestly made me light up seeing the recovery. You did a pretty big thing for that little guy (or gal). The things that really hits me though, is how the hummingbird actually flew to you, how it let you pick it up, and how it even sat on your arm and knuckles like a perch. Birds don't do that kind of thing unless they REALLY trust you. Birds won't perch in areas they feel unsafe in or don't trust. But you really had this little dude's heart and trust. I won a bird's trust once. It had been taken off the feeder by a magpie that started trying to eat its little head. I chased off the magpie and stuck around the little guy for a while until I could see that it was still alive, but I didn't try to touch it. I didn't want to scare it worse. After a while, it sort of collected itself, took a few deep breaths, and flew off, but after that, in the whole flock of birds that looked just like it, there was one that would stay on the feeder when I came outside. Didn't even care how hard the door closed. It just sat there on the feeder, watching me, and it had a little shock of feathers sticking up on the back of its head, right where the magpie had attacked. I named it Twitter, both for its chirps and for how social it seemed to be, and it always came back every summer. Statistically I know that my last summer there, when it didn't come, it had probably died. They don't live that long. But a corner of my heart insists that if I go back to that house, I'll see Twitter sitting on the feeder watching me.

Hummingbirds are such feisty little critters. It's really, really sad to see one at the very end of its tether - a hummingbird this still is on the edge of death. He was completely, totally exhausted (and badly dehydrated to boot). Very young one too - he was a juvie male, probably not long post-fledging. You did a truly good thing here. One never knows what ripples may pass outward from what seems, on the surface, like a small act of decency. And the little birb recognized it! He wanted to be on your arm because he felt safe there, until his batteries were fully recharged and he was ready to move on. Good. For. You. She is very territorial too! She will not let any other hummingbirds near 'her' feeder. I buy her a nice, new one every year with the features she seems to like the most, like perches. 5 years later in the middle of a COVID and rioting world, this pops up in my recommended videos and saves the whole year. How touching to see this man take the time to help a little hummingbird gain a new lease on life. This was incredible to watch. Thank you for sharing it.

Yes! Well said. It truly is the little things that matter. Every creature has the same right to live but, we take so much from them it is lovely to see us give back. Please feed the stray cats and wildlife this winter. Carry a bag with winter birdseed, raw peanuts and kitten chow. Vienna sausages, cat food cans leave for racoons possoms, cats, ducks, feed chained( report this) outside dogs some fatty meaty food ( spam, sausages) to help them survive. Put boxes, styrofoam coolers with towels in yard or park and leave food under cars in pkg lots you will fill a starving cold belly. You will be blessed.

It's what we have to do as decent people. Sometimes people might think things like this are a waste of time or stupid but id rather die helping something than not have the compassion inside of me not to. I know it sounds cliche but it's the little things in life that matter

@@blazeaglory ... l agree, it is so worth stopping whatever we're doing, or even missing an appointment, to save a life or prevent any more suffering. Those thinking our patience is stupid are the waste of time. l feel sorry they may miss this fulfilling experience as part of their limited life on earth. Protecting a needy helpless creature has to be the best memory to carry 🕊 The humans who have helped other people and animals in danger are the tops 🏆

@@barrez7300 Very good inspiring animal survival tips for the coming winter. l spend £40 monthly on wildlife food as part of my small budget to keep them all surviving. Plenty of water dishes too that will need defrosting SAFELY with warm water, no antifreeze in bird dishes or ponds folks.⚡ Wildlife is so important to me too

Ignore the negative comments and only pay attention to the positive ones. While there is cruelty to animals in the extreme, this man is not cruel or he would not have spent all day helping this cute tiny bird. God bless you, sir, for all that you did to give this little guy his life back.

Just saw a tv documentary the other night on hummingbirds where they mentioned that because of their high metabolism they have to feed every 10-15 minutes to stay healthy and survive. What this man did to save the hummingbird is beyond a miraculous recovery.

I found a hummingbird pretty much dead at work today, brought it home and looked up how to revive it. This came up, I used honey and water in a syringe and it worked. Thank you.
@LBCAndrew3 жыл бұрын
I'm fairly certain you shouldn't use honey. sugar-water is best for hummers. When honey is dissolved in water, bacteria and fungus thrive like crazy.

Thanks for doing that. Hummingbirds are wicked smart & great to have around. Even if he is migratory and flies 1,000+ miles south for the winter, he will EASILY find his way back to your house the spring. They are amazing.

Nicely done kind-hearted person. Just an aside, “he” is a she. Ruby throated hummingbird. If she was a male you would see an iridescent red throat. The spots on this bird indicate a female.

Sir, we need more humans to be like you, raising your child to show the upmost compassion for animals & human. The joy of her giggle, her laugh, is what its all about, teaching our children to be better servants to the downtrodden, the ill, less fortunate. Her little giggle with this hummingbird made my entire day, along my own childrens laughter. "Dont Blink" Thank you! 🙏❤️

I did something like this with a bee. I went to my balcony one morning and saw a drowned bee in the water, which was ice, from my drink the previous night. I lifted him up on my finger and let him dry in the morning sun. I gently blew on his wings. Presently, I found some jam and let him eat some. It was awesome to feel his tiny tongue on my finger. After about an hour he flew away. It made me happy.

Once at an outdoor restaurant, a butterfly landed on my table. Put a cube of watermelon in front of it and watched extend its spiraled tongue and poke at the watermelon a few times before finding a spot it liked. It moved its tongue around a few times more, each time repeating the poke-around-for-a-good-spot method, then flew off again. Got some pretty good pics too. prnt.sc/uq9dng

Same happened to me. Walked into the garage to see him making loops. He began to get tired and rested on the little ledges of the garage door. I had water in a container on the ready and he began to drink. You could see his tiny tongue dart through to the water. I let him fly away and I went to get a hummingbird feeder and some nectar and then he returned. With three friends :)

You're a hummingbird HERO. Hummingbirds are just beautiful. That was in bad shape. With their metabolism they need to fuel up every 15 min. So it was on it's last legs or wings.

The first time I saw one sitting in a tree is something I'll never forget. Another male was flying and showing off in front of a perching female, and the male I saw in the tree came flying in, and the males started showing off while trying to chase each other away. The female left at some point during this. Those males were then the most sad hummingbirds I have ever seen.....
