The Navy's new LOCUST (Low-Cost UAV Swarming Technology) launchers fire a swarm of drones that can jam enemy communications, and waste enemy resources by drawing fire. The launchers are capable of tube-launching 31 drones in just 40 seconds. The drones can fly autonomously but can also be controlled manually.
At just $15,000 a unit, the drones are expendable and can be used in dangerous situations. LOCUS is now in its development and testing phase.

Folding wing are switchblades. Fixed wing are called something like "striker". The fixed wings are extremely hard to shoot down and much cheaper. I'm guessing the fixed wing UAV's were used in developmental testing as a result--they have also be used in Anti-drone UAV testing.

People who don't understand the scale of military expenses wouldn't understand maybe. 15 grand maybe a big deal for you, and for most servicmen as well. But once you compare it with costs of other available equipments, its absolutely nothing. You could like go the range right now and shoot ammo costing more than 15k in a few hours.

I think they used the collapsible wings ones to test jettisoning them out of the launchers, it doesnt look like they have much space for electronics or a small payload. For that we need more awesome engeneers, more coders and less entitled managers who ask to be paid like during the 1990s. The problem is the high salary and very few qualified people for maintenance. Each projects can be create in short notice, while some engeneering are quitting for retirement or to work for other companies in the world for more lucratives salary. Problem in the USA is that everyone think they are patriot but they would not work overtime for cheap salary, like a Russian or Chinese engeneer. Many top American graduate are now working in Europe, Japan and even China. Everyone want to be rich, that's become a problem when the army try to be competitive.

@WellBattle6 3 жыл бұрын
Not effective against top-attack drones though. Also canister shot is only effective from 200m to 500m, so tanks would need plenty of warning time to engage effectively with the drone in correct distance. The designed loitering range of drone swarms used like the Locust are way beyond this distance as they are meant to be shot at by radar directed anti-air missiles.

@@WellBattle6 OK you changed my mind. We'll have to destroy them ship to ship. If a swarm of attacking drones is detected, we scramble a swarm of defenders. The target would have a "home field" advantage, and could possibly sortie a ridiculous number of defenders. The attackers on the other hand would have to travel a long way, using resources the whole time.

@@BoomerKeith1 I agree... at sea their best job might be defensive, as ships nowadays don't get into cannon to cannon range often (think old pirate movies!). I see these as a GREAT deterrent for the small boats that try to harass our vessels (which does happen often and we have very few options at the moment short of blasting them to pieces), as sending a swarm of possibly suicidal drones at your boat would make you think twice. They can also follow the little boats back to their origin and then take out that location with naval gunfire/aircraft missile, or even the drones themselves (especially the switchblades). From shore bases to vessels off shore would also be a great use, as they can return if the threat is not credible, or nose their way into the craft if it's a threat.

da ve, why is 15k their price anyway? I mean they just jam signals and for such use you are going to pay 460000$? Seems a bit pricey for such service. I'm no expert on anything, but as it is is just a waste of money at the moment. Money that are better spent elsewhere. And yes digitalization of school is actually beneficial, my high school recently switched and there is much more flexibility now then before even if things are not yet optimized. Besides, using your same argument, why does the military need new technology at all? , they got by so far! You can see clearly why this is flawed

Replacing the radar jamming payload with the payload from a CBU-72 sub munition would get you a fuel/air explosion that chases down its victims. Although it would have to be miniaturized to fit on the drone the concept is sound.

Bry Guy. Well, there is something worse than the US navy policing the world's oceans. It's the Chinese navy policing the world's oceans. Whereas the US is alliance minded, the Chinese are imperialist minded. Nations get a choice. Do you want the US patrolling your coast or do you want the Chinese patrolling your coast? At least in the South China Seas, every nation has chosen the US rather than the Chinese.

In california a massive reason for the homelessness is mind set and drugs, attempts by politicians and activist to "Fix" certain social problems by just pouring money on it have only failed, with the problem increasing and the amount spent ballooning, partially because you know these same people that go on about such social issue are grifting fucks. An example in California the difference in school results between different groups only increased despite dumping money on the problem.

1. Communism as a threat has been dead for 30 years. Not one country that has gotten rid of it has returned to it. It's no longer an argument for military spending. 2. The components are not US made. They're made in Asia, for example in communist China, which is oppressive but not very communist anymore. 3. The sum that goes to US factory workers is negligible compared to the cost of the drone. The money does disappear, and everyone knows where to. 4. The military exists to serve the people, not the other way around. While it is a necessary evil for almost every country, it's not paramount by any stretch of the imagination. 5. Stop referring to "defence". What the MIC does has nothing to do with defence.

Reminds me one episode from StarTrek where two planets were at war for centuries, and they made an agreement to stop infrastructure damaging and the horrors of war, so they waged war virtually, and "sacrificed" without pain the amount of people who supposedly died at their virtual battle... The Captain forced a Peace talk and then Treaty by turning off their system, meaning that one of the sides violated the agreement, which in turn meant that the chaos of Real war would come back...
